We ate out almost every night which is very unusual for us these days. I mean I cooked a couple of times and the Cali people enjoyed a good old-fashioned Italian feast now and again. They were very good about driving us around but one night they were all busy so we were on our own and decided to go out to eat.
Now the first day we were there we went to this hipster place called Misfits. Mainly because in our research we found that they had a lot of gluten-free stuff. It was similar to the shit you get in Brooklyn. Lots of young people. Fancy overpriced cocktails. Weird shit on the menu. But it was acceptable, I guess.
That night we caught a ride with the Circuit car. This is a weird little free car service that runs in a limited area in Santa Monica and other selected areas. You go on the website and put in your destination like you do with Uber. They accept the ride and show up in a weird little, tiny electric but. It is some sort of climate change scam to encourage the use of electric cars or some such bullshit. But it was free so why not.
The car pulls and it is garishly decorated with ads and looks like the Partridge Family bus. I asked the guy if he knew Shirley Jones but he had no idea what I was talking about. We do what we always do and start talking with the guy. When we tell him where we are going he starts driving us there. But as we go he says that he can recommend a better joint. He said it was old school and had a Rat Pack East Coast vibe that we would like instead of the politically correct hipster joint like Misfits. He said he will bring us and we could check it out and he would wait outside and if we didn't like it we could go to the original place. So we decided to try it.
We get out and go to the door. The girl at the front was half a retard and had no idea if they had any gluten free so she went to the back to ask the chef. In the meantime, we scoped out the place. Red check table cloth. Dark mahogany wood. Candlelight. Good beer on Tap.
She comes back and tells us that only two items are not gluten-free so we decide to take a chance.
When we sit down the chef comes out and sits with us. His name is Chef Memo and he tells us that his fryer is gluten-free. He only uses it for fries and brussels sprouts. No fish as Lisa is allergic. No batter. Score.
They had filet mignon on the menu with bearnaise sauce. Lisa's favorite. So we are set. We ordered and had a great meal. Chef Memo came back a few times to check on us and it was great.
Oh, another thing. The drinks at Misfits ran about $26 and the ones in Chez Jay were $12, I mean come on!
We went back there three times on the trip.
Highly recommended.
If you want to see what it looks like check out the TV series Goliath starring Billy Bob Thorton. The bar is the main location. We didn't know that at the time and have since seen the show. It is also pretty good. Check it out.

Nice to know there are outposts of civilization.
I have watched "Goliath" twice, and it's pretty cool that you went to Chez Jay's.
Billy Bob is one hell of a director - he really has a unique vision. The plots, are, of course, absurd, but all four seasons were entertaining, with the Central Valley one being my favorite.
Did you see a '64 Mustang convertible parked outside the bar?
Actually, there was one. Mello the Chef owns it.
The food was great and the atmosphere was awesome. It reminded me of old school Brooklyn, and I can't give it any more praise than that.
It was the only place in California that I felt at home.
It is obvious that the restaurant on the show is a set.
It is way too big. The real joint is very tight.
Each time they sat us at a four-top in the back and put a wooden divider between us and another party.
You would have loved the food.
The steaks were excellent, and they had a dish of full mushroom caps in a brown sauce that was out of this world.
The steak sounds good, but I have laid off the shrooms since the '60s, man.
Glad you had a good time out there.
I never went to Cali (except for slipping over the Nev/Cali border to visit Tahoe), so I'll have to live it vicariously through others. Sounds like you had a good time. Excellent.
