Food X

A relative sent me a link to this Fox News story: it appears there is actually a demand for chocolate-covered cicadas. The treats pictured above are made by Chouquette, a local (Washington-area) upscale chocolatier.

MamaM cited a recipe for cicada linguine in a comment here. At least that dish has a lot of things to distract you: garlic, pepper, lemon juice, pasta, and probably a lot of wine. This here is just chocolate and bugs. I don't know what it would take to get me to eat one, but I wouldn't even think about it for under a hundred bucks.

Back in the early '60s a classmate at Damascus High ate a chocolate covered bee. He did it for free and on purpose. Someone else paid for the confection.

I only consume insects inadvertently.

Just saw this over at InstaScum: “‘Friends’ ended in 2004 and had a reunion this week, which means the cicadas think it was on the whole time.”

Cicadas know stuff.

So, Damascus High had classes and everything? I thought it was just a football program.

That's interesting, because during my time there our principle, Ellis G. Glime refused to allow the formation of a football team. We had a rifle range, a cross country team, baseball and basketball teams, a track team, of course, but no football. Football was known to cause brain damage and severe injuries up to and including death, so it was forbidden.

I was in the marching and concert bands, ran track and cross country, used to shoot in rifle club, tried out for basketball but didn't make it, and so on. Good old DHS - those were the days, my friend.

I must be thinking of some other up-county school.

(In my senior year, our football team went 0-10, scoring a total of thirteen points.)

I left there in 1965, so you might be thinking of DHS after I left. I think Sherwood and various down-county schools had football teams, but not Damascus. The Hornets were basketball! Oh yeah!

I might eat one if it was deep fried, "with a nice chianti."

Sixty, Did you attend your 50th reunion? I graduated in 1970 and we haven't yet had a 50th.

Back in 2018 I made plans to attend, made preparations, even arranged for pet sitters to drive up from the coast, but as they neared my town their car broke down. So I spent the weekend helping them get their vehicle back in operational condition and I was unable to make the six hour drive up to the reunion.

During my high school years I attended four different high schools, but DHS was the group I stayed in touch with - I had gone to school with them from kindergarten on, so we have known each other for a very long time.

There was talk of a 70th birthday party as many of us were born in 1950, but that fell in 2020, and 2020 was wiped out by our communist rulers. So maybe in a few years there will be another - if you follow local papers you may have noticed, as I have, that the 50th HS reunion pictures show, for the most part, people who are still mobile and sentient. Pictures from the 55th reunion are very different - the decline is precipitous. That would be 2023 for us, and given how 2021 is going, one just never knows... We could probably hold the reunion in a phone booth.

I learned the hard way chiantis are hard to fry.

In a pasta dish, Brood X carcases might bear a small resemblance to shrimp. Seeing them covered in chocolate as they appear here, brings to mind Baby Ruth in the swimming pool.

To my eye these are visually unappealing on top of whatever else might mentally stand in the way of consumption. Checking out the website, however, reveals most of what they offer is for effect rather than delight. Who'd find an order Ruth Bade Ginsberg cookies yummy??? The Biden and Harris treats are unappealing. Even the Mother's Day chocolates look pukey.

Chocolate? I'd try one.
