PJ:  The decline of America, perhaps surprisingly, can be traced directly to the Nixon administration. Surprising, because the Left hated Tricky Dick with a passion that can only be compared with the passion that animates the never-Trump crowd: sheer, animal loathing. Surprising, because Nixon was the most domestically liberal, if not actually leftist, president we've had until Obama. Surprising, because to this day old Nixon-haters still foam at the mouth at the very thought of the man who took down the "pink lady," Helen Gahagan Douglas, and saved Israel in 1973; a year later, of course, they finally sacked him over Watergate.

But it was during the first Nixon administration that the hideous monstrosity of the Environmental Protection Agency came into being by executive order, along with its ugly twin, the Occupational Safety and Health Act. Seemingly innocuous and well-intentioned at the time, both agencies have metastasized, their original missions completed and now forever on the prowl for something else to meddle with. They're both unconstitutional, of course, but what's even worse is that they've turned into rogue agencies, issuing edicts, orders and regulations largely devoid of congressional scrutiny -- pure instruments of executive power, with none to gainsay them.

National Review Online: "A Heroine for Our Times"

So it is with countries. We fail to see sharp breaks where we can say: There, there is where it all happened."

And yet such moments do exist, the points of inflection where the curve changes from positive to negative. We might have thought little of the changes at the time, perhaps, but they made all the difference, and it is the task of the historian to bring them to light.

I am no historian, but I have one such moment in mind. It was when The New Republic’s senior editor Jonathan Chait wrote in 2003, “I hate President George W. Bush.” TNR was always a liberal journal, but under editors such as Andrew Sullivan (before he went mad) and the restraining hand of Martin Peretz, it prided itself on its reasonableness. The magazine might have been coma-inducing boring, but by God it was reasonable. (read more)

The reason why I chose to highlight the h word from the passage, is because shortly after reading the entire piece I thought of posting it, but I didn't, because I didn't have something to ad to it right away, nothing came readily to mind. But, apparently the crux of the piece stay with me, because hours later, the Nixon quote “Always remember that others may hate you but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them...” came to my mind. The quote comes towards the end of this video.

 

 

Do you remember other "such moments" when, now looking back on it, the toxicity levels where so high, alarm bells should have rung out, condemnations even.

Take Care That The Laws Be Faithfully Executed...

"That duty does not lapse when a president decides Washington’s “political environment” is not “normal.” Says long time opinion columnist George Will, in a hitherto scathing rebuke of president Obama.

When was it “normal”? The 1850s? The 1950s? Washington has been the nation’s capital for 213 years; Obama has been here less than nine. Even if he understood “normal” political environments here, the Constitution is not suspended when a president decides the “environment” is abnormal.

Neither does the Constitution confer on presidents the power to rewrite laws if they decide the change is a “tweak” not involving the law’s “essence.”

And then George Will does the unthinkable, for a columnist of his stature. George Will evokes Nixon. The top Obama is like Nixon tag I have been waiting for.

In a 1977 interview with Richard Nixon, David Frost asked: “Would you say that there are certain situations . . . where the president can decide that it’s in the best interests of the nation . . . and do something illegal?”

Nixon: “Well, when the president does it, that means it is not illegal.”

Frost: “By definition.”

Nixon: “Exactly, exactly.”

After watching clips of the real interview of Nixon with David Frost, I cant find the part where Nixon says "when the president does it, that means it is not illegal". That is frustrating. Almost as frustrating as the idea that most people will fail to see the connection between what essentially ran Nixon out of office and what Obama has done here.
