I'm closing this blog

It has become incrementally clear to me that "free speech" as we once thought we enjoyed, as a right, is on the verge of disappearing.

It's too dangerous for me to continue to endorse this (free-for-all) blog given the "woke" nature of the company employing me. I've chosen to adapt to the new realities as I perceive them.

I'm not going to cite examples of what I'm talking about. Feel free to put them in the comments, if you want. I will be leaving the blog open for a few days, to give you fellas and madams an opportunity to comment, on the comment section, as you see fit.

The best example, if we are to look for one, can be found here in this blog. First I was given the boot by Amazon; they asked me to remove the code bearing their name from this blog. Their email said they found some irregularities with the way the purchases were being conducted. But i believe it was the content of the blog they really had a problem with.

Then Google ads gave me the boot. They were a little more forthcoming. They objected to the content and they said so.

So, that's where we are at. I wish I could promise a return in some not distant future, but my gut tells me these changes going on now have a permanent bent to them. There's no going back.

It has been a pleasure. I will continue to tweet. If you fellas and madams want to follow me i would really appreciate it. I go by lemang01 on twitter. I'm planning on using twitter to keep you informed on the progress i posted about here.

Thanks everybody.

Not sure that Twitter the Shitter is going to be much of a safe refuge but I get the impulse to cut back on forums that might not pass muster in the Idiocracy Duhmerica.

Lem, I wish you the best in the future. I respect the strength and persistence it took to get to where you're at, which I guess goes for pretty much everyone who regularly contributed to this blog. Say hey if we meet out there on the interwebs.

You fought the good fight, Lem, and I for one will miss this blog. Do well out in your real day-to-day life.

Perhaps there will be something like Gab in the future that will be better at resisting communism, but like you, I have my doubts. Once freedom is lost it only returns after much turmoil, if at all.

Thanks for your hard work and brave spirit in keeping it going as long as you did, Lem, and best of luck to you.

Thanks Lem. Let's all meet @ Sixty's house.

Madams?

You mean DBQ and VBSpurs and Deborah and MamaM were...?

Kidding ladies. You are the best.

I'll miss all the guys, but I think we'll find each other again. Slowly, I think the jaws are closing on our little Lefty apparatchiks.

It may not seem like it now, but don't lose faith.

Come on down!

I used to watch the tv show Survivor and they had a ceremony at the end of each season where they would remember the tribe members who had been voted off. I guess we could symbolically do the same sort of thing, pour out a 40 on the curb for those commenters who peeled off over the years - DBQ, Darcy, Synova, for example, bagoh20, Birches, the creative and energetic Chip Ahoy, Lydia, Michael Haz, Unknown, ricpic, and those who kept on keepin' on, Methedras, edutcher, Nick, Amartel, Mumpsimus, MamaM, deborah, the inimitable Trooper, and so on.

Forgive me if I have forgotten anyone's name - it is early and now that I have done my run it is time to go walkies.

It's been fun, even when it was not so much fun.

Well, shoot, sorry to hear it Lem. You might try Parker over Twitter; rapidly growing as a true supporter of free speech.

I'll miss you funny, crotchety, and mostly spot-on insightful old folks .... and Sixty's woodworking!

Good luck. Your efforts were appreciated. And who knows, what with the butterfly effect, they may have made a difference.

All the best, Lem. And the same to all of you. I'll miss SG's dog... and cat.

And by "Parker" I meant Parler (thanks for nothing auto-correct)

Sadly and thankfully, I don't have to make the hard decision to leave now, as that's the direction I was heading but stalling on, not wanting to face the loss and disconnect involved with doing so.

Seven years is a good run, Lem. July 7,2013 is the anniversary date of the first post.
Not only did you fill a temporary niche in setting up Levity, you also provided the means for a unique blog community to form, while attending to your own growth, sobriety, and provision. That is no small feat! I honor you for your willingness to open yourself to engage in this and that.

And I encourage you to continue to remain open and avail yourself to the large "vein of gold" you hold within, the creativity and humor you already reveal in your photos and tweets as you attend to the work of making a life for yourself. It's my sense that the vein of gold within may be even deeper and richer than you currently know or imagine.

Yes, I join William (one of the commenters at Althouse whose comments I've consistently appreciated over the years) in saying, your efforts were appreciated. More than is possible for you to know or imagine, or me to express.

This blog has changed my life, to the point where I've allowed the efforts, promptings, poems, creative expressions, music, thoughts, and beliefs of others to enter my home and mind, enriching both.

-Physically, books and one-of-a-kind bowls now sit on my shelves and tables as a result of this blog.
-Shows, movies, and comedians have flickered across the M flatscreen (sadly finishing up with Bosch along with Levity this weekend!) as the results of mentions and recommendations made here.
-Artists, sculptors, poets, craftsman and musicians I hadn’t previously encountered or known about entered my world through this portal.
-Increased knowledge of food prep, hieroglyphics, and trees; along with the surprising yet not so surprising uncovering of significant early childhood abuse and/or loss in the lives of ALL the "girls" and stars whose ample and semi-covered bosoms were presented for viewing in the Whose That Girl series.
-Caladiums currently fill the two swan-shaped pots on my deck with pink and green plants I’d likely not have bought or enjoyed were it not for the enthusiastic mentions and pictures presented here. (I haven’t yet sprayed my lone calla with paint, but thinking about the idea of doing so makes me smile!)
-Screeds, provocations and expressed bursts of anger and ridicule I've encountered here have not only raised my blood pressure and flooded my body with adrenaline, they’ve also led to consideration and reconsiderations on my end, prompting research and realization along the with the opportunity to practice stepping away from the magnetic pull of drama. They've helped me learn to look for and attempt to form a coherent and meaningful response in place of a triggered reaction using the Creator, Challenger, Coach approach, which is vastly different from the Victim, Persecutor, Rescuer roles I engaged in during the first 50 years of my life. All of which results in another blessing realized while commenting here and previously at TY's Big Top before this blog was formed.

For the past seven years, I’ve looked forward to receiving bits and pieces of encouragement, enjoyment, information, and connection through this blog. With a sense of gratefulness and loss, I will miss it and all the posters and commenters who were part of my experience here.

May Grace and Peace be with you all,
Goodbye for now, MamaM

Attend to this
As a lamp shining in a dark place
Until the day dawns
And the morning star rises in your heart
I Peter 1.19

"In a house at midnight
even moonlight through the window
can light your way.

By the light of a faint star
slaves found their way
to freedom.

Even in thickest night
my Presence quietly shines,
not a searchlight, but enough.

Sit with me 'till the light
fills you and you yourself
are a candle in a dark place."

Well stated, MamaM - I would expect no less from you. Thanks for being a teacher for me over the years.

Since I have no idea when commenting will end, let me thank each and every one of you, again, for all the comments, good thoughts, kind words and support over the years.

2020 is certainly turning out to be a year of transition for me in many, many ways, and it sure would be nice to find a place to land - a place that would allow me to continue writing about my cats, dog and woodwork. I know, start my own blog, but come on, a fellow has to know his limitations.

Carry on, do well, and I hope to meet you out there in the ether. Be of good cheer, we will make it through, just as we have in years past.

“You know," said Arthur, "it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young."

"Why, what did she tell you?"

"I don't know, I didn't listen.”

@Chicklit, fifty years ago I read a book entitled "Ephemeral folk figures: Scarecrows, Harvest Figures, and Snowmen" by Avon Neal. The point of that book was to highlight the transitory nature of folk sculpture, and I took that lesson to heart.

If you take a long enough perspective virtually everything is ephemeral. The point is, all of our works, written, typed, on the internet or not, will pass beyond the pale in time. I think the challenge would be to figure out a way to keep one's work safe for a bit longer, by yourself, rather than to rely on servers you don't pay the rent and upkeep on.

You mean DBQ and VBSpurs and Deborah and MamaM were...?

Grand Madams, edutcher!

With this painting, capturing some of the silliness and soundness (music in hand) of Madame Grand from Tallyrand, linked to here as a final gift of Whose that Girl, complete with bosoms and a bow, for TY and those who enjoyed that feature,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madame_Grand_(Louise_%C3%89lisabeth_Vig%C3%A9e_Le_Brun)

You and I were spot on with regard to our predictions of the stir-crazy that resulted from the Shutdown. That energy fed into the plans of those intent on using fear and control for political gain and the destruction of social structure. Although I didn't actually see the second part coming on as strong as it did, fear of death is too powerful an emotion to hold inside without expression or displacement.

As usual, I appreciate the humor and perspectives, present even in this thread, that made Levity what it was.

Good news. Trooper is requesting to take over the blog, and I've decided that's probably the best way to preserve the legacy we've built here.

Or Mesdames in the Grand Manner.

I've always loved the little give-and-takes here.

PS Troop needs an outlet for his literary effulgence. This is perfect.

Trooper York said...

Sixty I sent you an email. I hope you got it. Thanks.

XRay said...

A good resolution... now I don't have to update my favorites. Press on, Troop.

chickelit said...

@Sixty regarding the ephemeral: First, I must work in a new Greek word that I learned this week: εφημερίδα. You're enough of a science guy to see that those letters have lasted centuries -- thus hardly ephemeral. Yet that Greek word for daily fish wrap is εφημερίδα.

I never saw blog posting as throwaway-lets-moveon-daily. And I always took tags more seriously than others. Fogblather (Trooper) was an exception there.

MamaM said...

Here's the question--

Will Trooper York keep this blog's name the same and leave Lem's name hanging out there in the wind for an employer to find after they finish ogling the oversized breasts? Or will he change it to something less incriminating like plain old Levity, LalalalaLevity? Tatas and Levity?
Or better yet, Levity and Angst!

Trooper York said...

I asked Lem and he left it up to me. I am inclined to leave it as it is to honor Lem's stewardship of the blog and leave the familiar links for those who don't come that often.

Lem deserves the credit and I want to give it to him.

MamaM said...

As I understood the situation: It's too dangerous for me to continue to endorse this (free-for-all) blog given the "woke" nature of the company employing me.

I'd say Lem has another think coming, if he thinks having one's name on the masthead isn't going to be viewed as endorsing a free-for-all blog.

edutcher said...

Very classy, Troop. We may get along like Lomax and Taw Jackson sometimes, but you have a good heart.

Tatas and Levity?

In the immortal words of Col Mike Kirby, "It sings".

The Dude said...

I too, take tags seriously. Sometimes I even research my own tags to see how many times I have posted exactly the same thing. The answer is always "A lot - you have posted the same thing a lot". Ah, the joys of old age - every new day is an adventure!

I like that word, εφημερίδα, it is a good word. Effing Merida, is how I cypher it out, but I could be wrong.

As for Lem's name - perhaps the name of the blog could be modified, but the main thing is that there is no linkage back to the original Lem. There are plenty of Lems out there, so maybe we could narrow it down with a modifier like "Big Papi" or some other unique handle.

deborah said...

When I thought we were shutting down one thing I regretted the tag loss :)

I would not have thought Lem's would be traced back to Lem in a meaningful way, but if it's an issue, I would suggest something like The Land of the Lemuelites or Lemmings Galore.
