Top of the train riders in India have a high risk of getting killed.
Happened to a couple western high school kids when we were there years ago. They forgot the equipment over the tracks.
(And there were a few million fewer people back then, though riding unreserved 2nd class women's compartment with two babes was something I told my husband I would never ever do again.)
This should make the nanny staters have strokes seeing shit like this. Dear God, the OSHA/NTSB/NTHSA/Dept. of Interior would have a field day with this. I remember the days when you could ride in the back of a pickup. Compared to this, that's nothing, but it's illegal here in California.
Presumably the train is a relic from British rule. What would they have if not that? What transportation would be there if not for British trains? All those riders but they cannot add new trains? It shows a demand. And not just regular demand, high demand. And not just regular high demand, crowd-the-roof-while-the-train-is-moving high demand. So what is the problem? Please do not say poverty because there is obviously no poverty in demand for movement so something industrious is happening. It means something else is also happening that automatically wrecks productive industry.
Chipper -- the train in that photo is a diesel. The steam locomotives were taken out of service a number of years back, and mostly sold to the Chinese.
The Brits left a terrific rail system behind (National Geographic has a wonderful video The Great Indian Railway.) It was always amazing to us to see the volume it carried. They've upgraded to compueterizing parts of it these days. And it runs better than the HHS sign up for Obamacare and always has. (I know that's not saying much ... but it is impressive. BUt I still would not ride 2nd class unreserved again.)
In addition to the rail system the Brits left a postal system, a legal system, and a basic framework for government which many of the non-Brit nations could have used.
Deborah, You bet! Inga is MVP and virtually all commenters are compliant..just like her classroom. Add some folks from here stacking 4-6 word comments all in a row and you got a "comeback?" I'm about the last person you know you want to try and bullshit, girl.
lol Nick, I just wrote in chick's thread that Inga's dialing them up over there. I guess I just see it building slowly, but of course it will take some time to build up the comaraderie of previous times.

Thanks, Haz, yes, I've seen it. Also, the Darjeeling Express(?) was pretty good, as far as those new-fangled movies with the new kids go.
I read Kim and A Passage to India this year. Never had wanted to go to India before, now I think I would.
