'Math Mentor Killed with a Box Cutter'

A 14-year-old Danvers High School freshman ducked into a darkened movie theater for a matinee of the new Woody Allen movie after authorities say he murdered his popular math teacher and dumped her body in the woods, a law-enforcement source said.

The theater manager said Chism “blended right in.” “He was here and gone before we even knew he was here,” manager Scott Przybycien told the Herald.

Chism was found at 12:30 a.m. yesterday while walking north on southbound Route 1 near Salem Road in Topsfield — about six miles by foot from the theater. A law-enforcement source said authorities believe Chism attacked Ritzer with a box cutter. The source said the boy was seen on school security video pushing a large recycling bin, which authorities believe he used to take her body outside.

Police found Ritzer’s body near the school, where they went to look for her after family reported her missing at 11:17 p.m. Tuesday. Cops found blood in a second-floor bathroom inside the school.

Chism’s arrest marked a horrifying turn of events for Danvers High School staff and students. They’d gone to bed Tuesday night worried about Chism after the missing-person alert was put out, only to awake yesterday and find he was accused of killing the beloved teacher.“It was like, hashtag find Phil, and then everyone just turned,” said Veatch, referring to the social-media effort to locate Chism Tuesday night. “Now everyone’s saying, ‘I can’t believe I talked to a murderer.’ ”

When we will properly regulate box cutters and end this madness?

The kid also changed out of his bloody clothes and then used her credit card at Wendy's before going to the movies.

They say they're going to try him as an adult.

Another son of Obama, just like Traygone. When will Barry be weighing in on this criminal case?

"hashtag find Phil"

Big picture clues.

I included a link to the High School Website.

If you want your tweet to reach as many people as possible you want to know as many popular hashtags as possible.

Put on your High School thinking cap.

That's just really, really sad.

This isn't sad, this is murder, PHX. It's an awful, horrendous thing to have happen to someone young and just wanted to reach out to kids. We need a serious fucking wake up call in this country and realize that we have broken people that live among us and we need to deal with them accordingly. There is way way way to much criminal sympathy in our society.

Thank you for mentioning that. I had no idea how one could murder another person with a box cutter, and then "just fit in" anywhere else other than at a slaughter house.

It's amazing how cold & calculating sociopaths can be after they've committed acts of monstrous cruelty. It affects them as much as if they've gone into the kitchen to fix up a PB&J sandwich.

It is. I can't fix that, brother.

I've been following this story since it broke. I don't think anybody knows where to place the blame other than on a 14-year old kid. How does that help?

The last I read nobody has a clue why he did it. You can say "too much criminal sympathy" fine. Maybe there is. I don't think that's why he did this though.

That's what I thought...possible sociopath. Complete inability to feel caring for someone. Do sociopaths even care about themselves? I can't imagine how you would deter a sociopath.

@phx,

You can't, and it's a terrible problem in modern societal morality. There is simply no treatment for them, and psychologists simply advise us all to avoid them as much as possible. This means that they get to prey on those who have little choice but to deal with them, while the better-off of us get to mostly avoid them.

About 1% of the population is thought to be sociopathic, but few of them manifest in a violent way. Some penologists claim that 40% of the prison population is sociopathic.

It used to be that pre-modern society beat them into submission, as they did most everyone else, and if that didn't work, simply killed them without remorse via the law. But for modern society, the idea that 1% of the population has no conscience at all, and will hurt their fellows as much as they can until the point that it brings on massive & immediate social retaliation, is an idea that cuts right to the heart of any notion of a "social contract".

My gut theory, for what is worth, is that this kid wanted the attention a killing would provide.

He is a copy cat.

High School is about what it always has been about, who is popular and who is not. This kid probably resented that, just as unpopular kids have always resented being unpopular.

These days, however, something is happening where kids are acting out their alienation in ways they perceive as some sort of overnight image makeover.

I predict more of this of violence.

YH interesting post but this part needs a qualification I think. Many sociopaths are extremely clever at hiding and misrepresenting their lack of feeling. So in a lot of cases even the better-off aren't protected.

LOL. You are SO right! In "pre-modern" societies such people would have been long dead. But we are so much more "progressive" now..

True dat, but I think that only "functional", i.e. amoral but non-violent, sociopaths move among the better classes.

Lack of control of one's violent urges gets one banned from polite society in a hurry. But I don't mean only poor people have to face these predators, I mean also folks like EMR staff, policemen, teachers, etc.
