The Babe Abides

"See first ya gotta get a good grip. Force the head down by having your head on his neck."
"Next up I will demonstrate the Rusty Trombone. Brother Matthias taught me that in St. Marys School for the Incorrigibles."

How come half the ball players break down nowadays? They're fine tuned machines...that like chronically break down. The Babe, did he train at all? Completely out of shape by today's standards and he put in 20 full seasons. When I was growing up the Dodgers put the same lineup on the field game after game for a full season. Campy would catch 150 games a season. Gil Hodges the same at first. Now players are "rested" every fourth game.

I don't think he was out of shape ric. That was just his shape. There have always been guys like him. Mickey Lolich. John Kruk. Ceil Fielder. David Wells.

Big guys with big bellies who are naturally athletic.

The Babe was always naturally athletic. He was a great pitcher and stole a bunch of bases. The thing is we only remember him as a fat old man with a big gut who hit home runs. Early in his career he was svelte.
