Bear accidentally dropped from helicopter to its death

Via twitter:  Wildlife officers in Thailand have launched an investigation after an Asian black bear was accidentally dropped from a helicopter and killed.

The bear, which was supposed to be sedated reportedly woke up and panicked, before falling from its netting after the helicopter flew into a pocket of rough weather.

“We want the investigation to be conducted in a way to prevent such a thing happening again,” said wildlife chief Wirat Chatuphon.

The bear, which was fitted with a tracker for future research, was taken by helicopter rather than a car so it could be flown deep into jungle.

Mr Chatuphon said it was unhelpful for the public to point blame, telling the Bangkok Post: “If everyone keeps looking for people to find fault with, officials will be discouraged and eventually will dare not do any work.”

Thongchai Saengprathum, secretary of the Khao Yai Foundation, said the officials involved should face legal action for negligence and that the bear should have been driven by car.

Well, that's a new twist.

Get over it. It was an accident. A little... a little... NO. I can't say it.

Sometimes the bear eats you, then there are other times when the bear falls about 1,000 feed and DIES!

AllenS good one.

I blame an unsimpathetic cold hearted gravity. Earths biggest threat.... only second to climate change.

feed = feet. Geeez!

"Bear in the air" briefly takes on new, literal, meaning.

Humans mostly suck.

Yeah, as a group we suck, and sometimes individually as well. I wonder if that giraffe is really pregnant or is it all a clickbait scheme and everyone who visits the site gets ... hacked. Or borne aloft in a semi-drugged state and dropped. Then the people who are nominally in charge of and paid for "protecting" us say "If everyone keeps looking for people to find fault with, officials will be discouraged and eventually will dare not do any work."

I don't get the high interest on the giraffe.

i would not want to share a helicopter with a panicky bear. I can think of worse resolutions to the drama.

It's a stretch, but it could be birth voyeurism or "rubbernecking."

I do. On several levels. For some it is an acceptable place, a "safe" place to celebrate the miracle of a female giving birth in accordance with natural design. For other's it's the anticipation of a mini-me clone of an adult giraffe, tiny in comparison to the mother, but large at 6ft tall and 100-150 lbs)emerging front feet and head first from a standing mom to drop on the ground and be ready to stand and walk within 30 minutes and run later that same day. All of which is pretty amazing development that's astonishingly different from human development with labor and birth accomplished in a comparatively short time with no outside intervention. Then there's the cute and adorbs crowd in search of something new and darling to focus on and gush about besides clever engagement pics, romantic wedding photos and darling big brother, big sister announcements.

I've not been watching, even though I find the subject interesting, as it's enough on my end to be waiting for spring.

It's a classic bear plunge story.

National Lampoon once reprinted newspaper bus plunge stories. They're used as column fillers, two inches here and three inches there.

Back when there was news.

I had a pleasant laugh at the polite suggestion to not find fault with people, as well.

That ship has sailed. The wildlife workers will probably be put to death. At the very least ostracized by their communities. I mean there is no coming back from causing a defenseless animal's death is there? Is there??
