Sterile Meeps

Meryl Streep said:
All of us in this room, really, belong to the most vilified segments in American society right now. Think about it. Hollywood. Foreigners. And the press. ~ NYT
Really Meryl?  Because to my ear, the most vilified segment of American society right now are Trump voters. When will you learn some history, Meryl Streep?
We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature. ~A. Lincoln (1861)

Another example of why Trump won.

Meryl, were you playing Narcissus tonight?

How about them Packers, EBL?

Streep unloaded on football fans, too. Maybe we don't give a shit what she wears to costume balls?

There's some ad displaying, here at Lem's, where Dr. Oz is hawking some sort of anti-age skin cream with a photo that looks like a penis but it's a finger with a dab of cream on the end.

Some sort of competitor is furious.

I think I read on the internet some time ago that his colleagues were trying to get him bounced from some prestigious position he held at some prestigious hospital. Maybe in Boston.

I hope they succeeded.

Perhaps we hate you Meryl, because you are a goddamed leftist progressive democrat who supports corruption and lies and helps sell all those lies through your platform.

The rest of us don't have a platform to correct you.

Joe Biden, America's Putin said...

I'm delighted if Hollywood thinks we hate them.

When all those hollywood a-holes are gathered in a room to self-congratulate each other and hand each other awards in hunger game outfits, for "acting" - I hope Allah drops a bomb on them, the ground opens up and swallows them whole, or a SMOD.

...doing us a favor.

The director panned to Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn who are NOT liberal weenies. They were stone faced. While Streep was certainly preachin' to the choir, she did not get the rousing ovation I would have thought. Some in Hollywood see the tide turning and the business people are concerned w/ profits more than politics.

chick, It seems our insufferable Giant's fan took an opportune time to reject football. Those Giants got pimp slapped!

She's a good actor. She portrayed Ethel Rosenberg as a saintly, benign presence in Angels in America. She portrayed Margaret Thatcher as a demented old woman in the movie version of Thatcher's life. But there's more to Ethel Rosenberg and Margaret Thatcher than is dreamed of in Hollywood scripts and Streep's performances......You can't fault her technical skills as an actor, but she doesn't live in the real world. They create these fantasies and call us ignorant for not believing them.

Meryl supports Hillary. Hillary is a corrupt lying sociopath.

Drive it around LA.

They should have some kind of meta awards show where Hollywood acknowledges the best put down of Trump in an acceptance speech, the best put down in a late nite comic monologue, and the best celebrity endorsement ad. Really, these people don't honor themselves sufficiently. We need to honor and reward them not just for their stage performances but for their contributions to Trump revilement.

Leland said...

I've been to a couple of engineering conferences with awards. I've heard people talk about their project, coworkers, and even family. I never heard them talk about politics, even when the work was part of a government contract.

Maybe, if they stuck to discussions about their industry, rather than proclamations about the rest of society; a segment of the society wouldn't find a reason to vilify them. By they, I don't mean some murderer in Berkeley. I'm using the pronoun per INGSOC Dictionary of Newspeak Edition 8, which is the most current edition I have. It's a sort of "Othering", except I guess now you can Other yourself.

@Nick: That photo of Madonna currently up at Drudge? Baby Jane Hudson lives!

The Dude said...

Hey, that reminds me - which famous person is next to kick the ol' bucket?

Place your bets, ladies and gents:

Charles Manson
QE II
Abe Vigoda
Willie Nelson
Glen Campbell
Kirk Douglas
His boy
Betty White

Feel free to add your own guesses.

Some Seppo said...

Abe shuffled off this mortal coil in 2016. But Detective Fish lives on.

Leland said...

I'll take some of that Kirk Douglas and add Olivia de Havilland. Willie ain't going nowhere. And Betty White is a losing bet.

ricpic said...

Kirk will outlive his boy.

Vigoda is unkillable!

Betty White was a sexed up broad. She actually gave me the come on when I lived in NYC. It happened I tellya!

Streep? Her schtick is accents, like that Polish accent she pulled off in Sophie's Choice. Other than that I don't get her appeal. Although she did play a pretty good Iowa housewife expiring of boredom in the corn until Clint Eastwood came along to make her tingle in Bridges of Madison County.

Leland said...

So, did anybody actually watch the golden veneer globes?

Evi L. Bloggerlady said...

I forced myself to watch some of it. It was actually super lame. Goldie Hawn bit with Amy Schumer came off as her being drunk or suffering from dementia (maybe both). I suspect it was a joke ginned up by the writers, but it was bad comedy. Most of the Trump jokes fell flat. Meryl's lecture was tedious and stupid. While there were plenty of Koolaid drinkers, I noticed quite a few folks in the audience were not clapping or cheering on these Trump attacks. There is no upside in it.

And while I did not see Moonlight (the saga of black gay men coming of age is not for me), I rather doubt it was a better film than Hacksaw Ridge.

It did not come off as classy or glamorous, but boring.

Evi L. Bloggerlady said...

I hope it is not QE II, only because having Charles as king would be fucking insufferable. Let's him die in a tragic tampon mishap first and then the Queen can go to her final rest. Long Live The Queen.

This clip is actually funny but I remember an SNL clip about Prince Charles, a tampon and Mick Jagger playing the butler. Good times, good times.

Wasn't that long ago that Streep was dumping on Walt Disney. Got to give her props for moving up to dumping on a living man that fights back.

Leland said...

I figure you would enjoy the La La Land victory laps, EBL.

My wife saw a news story earlier. G.H.W. and Barbara Bush are celebrating 72 years of marriage. He hasn't looked too good in the last couple of years. So we can add to Deadpool: 39 or 41?

Amartel said...

These people just bore me which is pretty much the opposite of their job description. So predictable and outdated, just like their products.

deborah said...

Evi, if I am not mistaken, Charles has officially abdicated the crown to William.

The Dude said...

He hasn't, but Prince overdosed and died. It ain't easy bein' purple.

Trooper York said...

Football is dead to me and I don't give a shit.

Trooper York said...

And I give even less of a shit what Hollywood pussies have to say.

Just like millions of deplorables who will not be going to any Meryl Streep movies ever again.

deborah said...

Trooper, an excellent point. I think very soon Hollywooders are going to feel the monetary effects of shooting their mouths off. Call it the Jane Fonda Effect. This won't affect all stars, for example, the younger ones with younger fans who aren't politically oriented. But Streep has an older audience and it may bite her in the butt hard.

Leland said...

I think you are mistaken Deborah. I've found nothing official about Charles abdicating, and many remarks about how the Queen dislikes the concept, as she believes the crown is the will of god. There's plenty of innuendo that Charles abdicated in order to get to marry Camille, but I would take that with a lump of sugar and a slice of stilton.

chickelit said...

It did not come off as classy or glamorous, but boring.

It was gassy and clamorous.

The Dude said...

Charles is a muslim convert. Make that a cup of tea and a slice of an infidel's neck.

deborah said...

Thanks, Leland, I saw it in a tabloid, then double-checked at what I thought was a better source...it was predicated on the popularity of William and Kate, and what was 'good' for the throne. Now I think about it, there would have been a big splash in US news had it been true :)

deborah said...

PS...my article said Charles had agreed it was the right thing :/

Lee Lee, you've changed.

Amartel said...

Many commenters have changed quite dramatically. You've turned into Kissinger and April is wearing a turban. An old school Hollywood Lady turban like Tallulah Bankhead. Tallulah was from the days when Hollywood was original and interesting.

deborah said...

I noticed April copy-catting me :)

Leland said...

I'm an enigma.

Amartel said...

Similarly, Kissinger was from the days when modern politics was original and interesting. (I'm not counting old school politics when people had duels and whatnot to settle scores.)
That is Kissinger, right? When he was a young orange? (I'm slowly going a bit blind.)

deborah said...

That is he. I changed it to rag ricpic. I guess it's about time to change back...

deborah said...

I thought you were a Texan.

In the land of the exasperating, Meryl Streep operates at a comparatively low level of irksome. I don't put her in a class with Lena Dunham, Cher, or Madonna. And, of course, Jane Fonda ranks right up there with John Wilkes Booth so far as scumbag celebrities go. Streep is fatuous, but her fatuity is within tolerable limits. I have no wish to see her torn apart by wild dingo dogs such as I would with Jane Fonda. It's not possible for me to boycott Dunham or Madonna because I don't consume any of their products. I've actually seen a fair number of Meryl Streep movies. She's genuinely talented. If she makes a good movie, I'll see it.....Of all the scumbag celebrities, Vaness Redgrave is the only one whse nerve I admire. She made some kind of speech praising the Palestinians at an Oscar ceremony. That took some kind of nerve. Not as much nerve as showing a Mohammed cartoon at a Hamas award dinner, but nerve nonetheless.

Amartel said...

It's a cumulative effect fatuosity, unimpeded by critical thinking much less intellectual curiosity, facts, or empathy, and gloriously, sanctimoniously confident in its righteousness. Makes you wonder how far outside her own bubble she travels to find these characters she plays. Her complicity in stabbing Maggie Thatcher in the back is enough for my disdain. She's supremely lucky Mrs. Thatcher was already dead at the time. That and the fatuous alar hysteria.

The Dude said...

Dingo ate her buy-bee.

Joe Biden, America's Putin said...

Kissinger is one hot mama.

Trying to keep in interesting... for me it's rather hopeless '-)

deborah said...

Silly thing.

chickelit said...

OK, deborah, change your avi. That's not going to stop me from voicing you as HK at some point. :)

I haven't figured out who April's is.

I had to give Streep my "rock bottoms for Rodham" tag. She's not a clueless rockstar, but she may as well be.

deborah said...

Perish the thought!

@William: The still unrepentant and defiant Jane Fonda created the role for her understudy, Meryl Streep.
