Every nincompoop commenter and douchnozzle pundit will repeatedly slam Donald Trump for being a Reality Show star. They drip contempt from their condescending smug mugs while they promote fey Rent Boys and Frankenstein Monsters who never met a villager he couldn't alienate.
They don't realize something. Being a Reality Show star is his secret weapon.
You see he has been in every regular American's home for the past decade. Not George Will's house where they don't own a TV. Not Jonah Goldberg's house because he only watches the Food Channel. Not Anderson Cooper who is in a hot tub with Marco Rubio and Titus. The elites and the political class have no idea of what normal regular average unwashed Americans watch. For ten years.
So when they say that he is racist they think about how he dealt with Star Jones and Kenya Moore and Amarosa and Lil John. They could see by the genuine affection between them that there is no way that Trump is racist. They saw him interact with Joan Rivers and Gilbert Gottfried and Gene Simmons and Dice and they know he is not an Anti-Semite. They see him with hot hispanic babes like Dayana Martinez and Patricia Velasquez who you could tell he loved. Of course the elitist twats don't know who any of those people are and they are proud of it. Regular Americans are just not afraid of him. He was there in their living room every week. Just like Ronald Reagan.
The same people tried to sell the same nonsense when Reagan ran. That he was just an actor. Just a clown who made a movie with a monkey. Not a serious person. Or they tried to say he was a madman. A maniac. Someone who would destroy America by getting in a nuclear war with Russia. America knew that was bullshit. Because Ronnie Reagan was in their living room every week. He wasn't crazy. He was a regular American just like them. They didn't fear him. All the lies and gotcha traps and bullshit that they threw at him just rolled right off his back. Of course some of the people who attacked Reagan back then are the same ones attacking Trump now. They pretend that they are the ones who pretend that they always loved Reagan. When they tried to stab him in the back every chance they could get. So it is to laugh to watch someone like David Gergen tells us how terrible Donald Trump is and how he disgraces the party of Lincoln and Reagan.
Here's the thing. People say that Trumps voters will vote for him no matter what. No matter what part of his record they cite or what position he took one time or another that is the magic bullet that will make people run away screaming into the night. Of course they will. They are not afraid of Donald Trump. They know him in a way they don't know Cruz or Rent Boy Rubio. The opposition and the media can define those guys however they want. Most of Middle America already knows Trump in one way or another. They have one thing to say to these pundits and pontificators who know so much and who want them to sit down and shut up and vote for who they are told. They have one thing to say to them.
You're fired.

Exactly.
When Jack Warner heard Reagan was running for President, his first reaction was, "President? His best friend, maybe". But Reagan learned what it took to become part of the family doing "GE Theater" and "Death Valley Days". And he used that.
And the Rockefeller wing of the party was as scared of him as the Whigs are of Trump.
Those who forget the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it.
Of course it is Trump's secret weapon: he can manipulate the media better than anyone in politics (better than Obama given they are overtly hostile to Trump and Obama got a mostly friendly press and media to deal with ).
Trump is not the problem with the GOP. The problems with the GOP for years led to conditions that allow Trump to rise.
The difference is Reagan was a serious guy, who did not just walk into the presidency (he was governor of California). Will Trump be awesome as President? I hope so if he wins. But this is somewhat of a crap shoot.
I know what I am getting with Cruz--which is why I support him. I am less than thrilled by what we would get with Rubio (but compared to Hillary he would be awesome). I assume Trump will be far less than what is promised but probably better than Hillary.
How many people sued Reagan for fraud?
How many people did Reagan bankrupt?
How many times did Reagan fail at business ventures and then tell you he's great at business?
Reagan was born dirt poor, and made his own way through his whole life and ended up wealthy, which means his return (his business acumen, and general success) far exceeded Trumps.
Reagan carried 44 states in 1980 and 49 in 1984, was an unalloyed conservative, and was smart enough to have a debate on the issues without resorting to schoolyard insults. People who trusted Reagan were rarely disappointed, and never conned. Reagan would be embarrassed and disgusted with Trump, but other than that, yea, pretty much the same guy.
Harry Truman went bankrupt. So did Abe Lincoln when he ran his general store into the ground. Washington, Jefferson, Madison and Monroe all had terrible business problems. I mean they had to sell their slaves! Imagine that.
None of them stole as much money as the Clintons and the Clinton foundation. If Trump runs against Clinton that is the choice.
Just for the young snots that don't know history, at this point in 1980 (Reagan vs. Carter), Carter was ahead by 25-30 points.
Nobody voted for Truman or Lincoln because they were great at business. Neither of those men got the free luxury ride that Trump did. They made their own way and paid for their own failures. If Trump didn't inherit all that money and opportunity from his dad, you wouldn't know he existed. You are voting for him because you think he's a capable successful man who is telling you the truth, and will do what he promises. "Those who forget the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it." You want him to be someone he isn't, and never has been.
That is not why I am voting for him. I am voting for him because he is a fighter. He fights and schemes and deals and does what he has to do for himself and his family. I am putting him at the service of our country. I am betting that his ego will do wonders in the service of the American people.
Not a rent boy. Not an ineffectual ideologue who couldn't organize a gang bang in a whorehouse.
Yes he made his money the old fashioned way. He inherited it. But you know what. With all of the stuff you mentioned he still has a pretty substantial pile. With a lot of accomplishments. Business has ups and downs. But he is still doing pretty good. Not on the government tit like the Clintons.
Plus he is not a lawyer. Or a politician. Reason enough to vote for him in my book.
Romney is making a major speech tomorrow. The transcript has been leaked.
It starts out -
"Donald Trump has a little dick." and gets worse from there as Mitt opens up a full can of LDS whoop ass on The Donald.
He went full Mormon and you know what they say about that.

Harry Truman had drifted from job to job before he went into the Army in WWI and, after tried his hand as a haberdasher until the business failed. He got where he was because he was part of the Prendergast Machine in Kansas City. Truman was picked by FDR because he wanted a less Leftist running mate than Henry Wallace.
Abraham Lincoln lasted only one term in the US House of Representatives because he opposed the Mexican War as a Southern plot to add more slave states. He made a name for himself as an opponent of slavery, but his private comments are clearly those of a man whose concern was less about racial equality than coercing the South to remain in the Union.
Seems to me Trump's rise is more on merit than theirs. But, if you just hate the guy because he's rich or something, vote Bernie.
We're almost down to my predicted eventuality: "I'm voting for him because he has the most awesome hair."
I guess you don't know that all those failed businesses with the Trump name on them failed mostly because he didn't fight very well to make them succeed. Every one of them had the Trump name front and center, and involved meetings and literature where he told investors and employees that he would make it happen, and they were expecting to succeed because of him, and that was how he conned them into trying when he didn't, so I don't think his ego helps him do what he says he will. He's like you - you both imagine that his failures are really successes that people just don't see properly.
bag, admit it, you and April want a savior who will make the world over the way you want.
Trust me, he doesn't exist.
It's not that Ed. They misjudged the Donald and can't change their mind.
So it is the hair, isn't it?
You're 100% right Troop. I misjudged him. At one time, I was as excited about him as you are now. I thought all the same things you do. I also used to believe that a black President would improve racial relations in the U.S. The biggest problem with life is that the lessons are so expensive. As a great blogger once said: "Those who forget the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it."
If Trump turns out to NOT be a disaster - and I've even lost my confidence now that he can win - you guys are gonna tear me a new one. At the risk of calling forth Titus, I'd love that to happen.
Obama was riding high until the Rev. Wright story broke. June, I think. Way after Super Tuesday IIRC. It was a real WTF moment.
Not only do I not want a savior, I wish the job of President was so insignificant that I didn't care who won. I could never get as excited about a man applying for a job as you guys do for the possibility of being the 1 millionth person scammed by Trump.
True dat, Deb, but like now the true believers didn't care.
The decision is made early with little research or reflection. Everything after that was pure spin to defend the mind already made.
I change my mind easily and often. At work I can have things my way every time if I want. It's not a democracy, but I listen to people, I ask questions, and I take pride in changing my mind to the better argued and supported position. It rarely leads me the wrong way. I love that shit. It has saved my ass so much.
There was an AP photographer who said that he tried for years to get a photo that showed Reagan looking old and confused. Reagan, however, had the movie star's knack of never taking a bad photo. He made his own image. It was not superimposed on him........I agree with Trooper's comments. Trump has a reality star's outsized presence. He is not defined by tv pundits. He is far larger than the little box they want to put him in. Trump may screw things up, but he's not a fascist or a racist. Such accusations make me distrust the media more than I do Trump..........Trump's business record may not be an unbroken series of triumphs, but he's got a private plane and a supermodel wife. He's not Willy Loman out there on a shoeshine and a smile. One can say that his life and business dealings have been reasonably successful. We should all suffer such failure. Part of his persona may be a con job, but that's part of every successful president........I would have picked just about any of the governors, including Jeb and Huckabee, over Trump. Trump has absolutely no record in governance. There's just no way of knowing how he'll turn out. But HIllary has an outstanding record of failure, hypocrisy, and ethical lapses, and you can reasonably expect more of the same........The choice will be between Trump and Hillary. I'm amazed that in a country of hundreds of millions it comes down to a choice between those two, but there you are. I'm sure that Trump will be wrong about a lot of things, but I'm also sure that he will be right about more things than Hillary. In any event he'll be more fun to watch.
Whenever I see an old school Republican on t.v. I could just barf.
And whenever I see Hillary filled with glee and smiling broadly and expansively much as María Eva Duarte de Perón and I could immediately and violently hurl
… the nearest heavy thing at the television to destroy it. It's electrifying. The feeling is felt sharply negative like that. As when nerves are shot. It's electrifying hate. Serious hate. It's a black hole of hate that sucks everything at the event horizon into it. It is a horrible feeling to harbor. A terrible feeling to be shot with as if by an arrow. A poisoned arrow.
And lately every time I turn on the tube and folks are discussing Clinton and Sanders with such seriousness and with all their analytical heart, a discussion so involved with minutia of Democrat caucusing oddities and each time I'm bemused as to why they spend so much heartfelt time pouring over an obviously lost cause. Why can't they feel the corruption that eats my eyeballs on sight and so pervasive it erodes the floor under them and everything around them and yet they carry on as if nothing is happening?
If they stepped in dog poo they would shriek and wither in horror and seek to be cleaned of it immediately. Yet they bathe in the corruption they help create with Hillary.
Their candidate is under two FBI investigations, her aides are being pressured, and her supporters write it all off as the type partisan horseshit that they would sling themselves. That's what's so incredible. They just FLAT don't want to hear about it. As if it doesn't exist.
Diminished enthusiasm to begin with, because they're basically racist, let's face it, that's demonstrated repeatedly, and there is no racist component for them to latch onto, and some of them do recognize a serious legal problem chewing up Hillary even as she runs for president. So two very serious problems right there. Devastating problems. Not having a real choice is a third very serious problem bearing on enthusiasm bearing on turnout. Their turnout is very bad.
Contrasted with Republicans/conservatives/everybody who's not Democrat where enthusiasm is very high. Unusually high. Fueled by intense anger the likes of which I have not seen, and disgust, real disgust, not hippy disgust, real solid disgust of the sort that transforms parties and the likes of which I have not seen.
So why do they even show it? Why discuss her? She's doomed. Why discuss Democrats this time around? They're just play acting at this point They have no hope. They're going to lose. And lose badly. She extends her shit-eating grin on her neck and I visualize a scythe slice across the frame. Discord has been sown and now the whirxxxx F5 tornado. Isn't this perfectly clear?
I must now pray.
[Jesus, what should I do? *drums fingers* Calm yourself and be of good cheer. -- Oh. That again. Fine.]
I read on one of the few right wing sites that I visit anymore that when DOJ offers you immunity then you cannot evoke your right to remain silent. That is, under aggressive investigative interrogation they must answer.
And this fills my heart with wonder and love and a new fondness for humanity.
It's the thing we see on t.v. where the feds go after the underlings to chew up the rug from under their target revealing a trap door that leads to the subterranean passageways of Portland and taken aboard ship to Shanghai as crew member kept in a barrel.
I'm surprised it's DOJ doing this because, frankly, I assumed that was hopelessly politically corrupted too.
OK, Troop. OK. I give up. 1) You are absolutely right about everything, as are all of your followers absolutely right about everything. You are a great leader, and precisely because you are absolutely right about everything. 2) I give up. In exchange for that, will you truly leave alone the likes of me to live life without interference of any kind?
this a million time this!

Again worth repeating @ Bagoh
"Not only do I not want a savior, I wish the job of President was so insignificant that I didn't care who won. I could never get as excited about a man applying for a job as you guys do for the possibility of being the 1 millionth person scammed by Trump."
I've never witnessed so much teen idol worship and absolute dismay when some of us don't fall in line. then the cognitive dissonance and projection kick in.
Trump supporters want a savior.
This a good. Explains a lot. RTWT
You're honest about it, AllenS. I appreciate it.
“With nuclear, the power, the devastation is very important to me.”
--Donald Trump
April, we get that you hate Trump, but your hatred is rendering you insane. Your behavior over at Instapundit is unhinged - are you serious about trying to get Glenn to modify his commenting system?
You project a lot and you have control and anger issues and both are abundantly clear in the comments you make over there. You should either dial it down or just accept that there are things in this world that you cannot change.
But is is amusing to watch you come unraveled - entertaining, even. I guess seeing your pool boy Marco fail has taken its toll on your mental health.
This is really getting tiresome. It is as if we are speaking two different languages. No one is going to change anyone's ideas or anyone's positions.
It isn't a dialogue or even an argument that might resonate, ESPECIALLY when some of those...you KNOW who you are, insist on trying to read our minds, try to tell us what our motives are, and are dripping with condescension. Projection, anger, belittling are not persuasive tools.
As with the GOPe, I see, here, a distinct inability or willful refusal to try to understand the mindset of where others are coming from, either culturally or mentally. Trooper tried to explain it in terms of the Reality Show genre. I have never watched Trump on television, other than some outtakes, but I don't denigrate those who have and I understand that portion of Trump's appeal. Some of you might try it.
The elites and the political class have no idea of what normal regular average unwashed Americans watch. [added: or think about] For ten years.
Here is the deal. When you are debating someone, you MUST understand their position and know the arguments that they will be making so that you can counter those arguments with intelligent, logical, well reasoned, non argumentative points and without personal attacks. This is something that I have learned over my lifetime, being on a debate team in college (something I greatly enjoyed) and in my professional life as a sales person and advisor.
I would not have gotten very far if I belittled my clients stupid ideas, condescended and literally called them names. This is NOT how you win arguments. This is why Trump is winning. He isn't belittling or condescending to the American public.
Trump supporters want a savior.
Actually, I want someone to get into the Augean Stables and clean up the filth from the last 50 years of corruption, self serving public servants, and flush the waste. Evict the squatters from the town square who are crapping everywhere.
I want someone who will kick the sacred cows in the ass. I want to see the curtain ripped off and show us the wizards at their controls attempting to scare the crap out of the public so that the wizards can keep control.
Kick over the buckets. Sweep the stables. And curse up a storm the whole time if that is what it takes.
Not that I really think that Trump or anyone else can do all those things. But it might be a start. We know that it will be the same old same old with any of these other bozos.
I'm willing to take the chance that something different will make something different happen.
Are you the one deleting my posts, Sixty?
Isn't it odd that all the anti-Trump posts are reported as abuse?
You think I'm unhinged?
That's brown shirt behavior right there. If you are so terrified of opinions that don't line up perfectly with your own, go support Hillary or the democrats. that's their game, sixty.
April, your posts are not "deleted" - all one has to do is click on them to read them. But you insist on reposting them ad-infinitum - unhinged behavior at best. Obsessive and hate-filled, might describe you, too.
I don't have an account over there and I don't comment, but if you are being reported 100 times a day clearly more than one person is sick of your twisted shit. We get your love for a sweaty Cuban, but clearly reason and logic have long since escaped you.
People who abuse the report button, are cowards.
Sixty - almost all anti-Trump posts are "reported as abuse"
I'm taking a stand.
You don't like?
tough.
DBQ:
"I'm willing to take the chance that something different will make something different happen."
I'm tending this way. Cruz, with his extreme abortion stance and unfortunate Evangelical-preacher cadence/southern twang delivery, guarantees a Hillary victory. Guar-own-tee!
Whatever, April. Taking a stand, acting like a fool, your call.
I really don't care - nothing I can do will change who is president nor alter the course of the nation.
And your assertion that "anti-Trump" comments are reported is false on its face. Your bullshit repetition is reported because it is abuse.
At Instapundit, you are only allowed 5 "reports" a day. So if someone is being reported hundreds of times that means that many many people are sick of your shit.
There is a difference between spamming the same comment multiple times and making decent arguments. And as Shouting says. The comment is not deleted, just reported. I often look at the deleted comments to see what is being reported.
I do believe it would be better to have an up/down vote system instead. Thumbs up and thumbs down votes by numbers. However, that is not MY, or your, decision and creating a nuisance of yourself by spamming the board is not the way to do it. It puts you into the Inga/Annie unhinged category. You are better than that.
DBQ - are you OK with all anti-Trump comments (by me or others) being reported as abuse?
DBQ - I get reported as abuse even after one simple comment. A comment that isn't "abusive", just not pro-Trump.
Farcourt is reported all the time and some of the others are too. You deny this?
And so it begins.
The othering of the opposition: "Insane," "hateful," "unraveling," "unhinged," "obsessive."
Before you accuse me or anyone else, take a look at yourself.
Nothing we haven't seen time and again from Obama Fanbots.
Followed by denial.
Followed by irrelevant 1st amendment argument.
Have you read what April has posted, Amartel? It is bad.
But thank you - I will try to be more self-aware in the future.
Yesterday there was speculation about where others had seen comments by April and I since I knew she commented here I thought I would see what was going on.
That won't happen again - keep spambotting April, it suits you.
Here - I'll post it for you!
Shut up, the brown shirts explained. . ..
All anti-Trump comments will be reported as abuse.
No I am not OK with all anti Trump or pro Rubio or anti Cruz or any type of comment being reported for abuse when the gist of the comment is merely a differing point of view. Those are just plainly attempts at censorship and I disagree with that. If people aren't adult enough to read differing opinions and be able to respond with intelligent arguments, make comments to counter those opinions, just scroll on past and ignore, they should have their keyboards taken away until they grow up.
Abuse is another issue. Spamming the same comment over and over and bitching over and over about being reported is abusive. Name calling at other commenters is abusive. Doxing commenters as Meade is always trying to do is abusive.
When someone begins this type of spamming tactics, their user name becomes known for that type of abuse and consequentially, whether fair or not, people associate that user name with being an annoying spammer, a troll, and the report button gets pushed. A page of reported comments by the same user is not conducive to furthering discussion. It is about as attractive and compelling as clogging the toilet in your guest's home to make a point.
Here's one: Off with my head!
Trump quotes are the most upsetting.
"With nuclear, the power, the devastation is very important to me."
-Donald Trump
Hilarious.
Up with word salad!
DBQ - It is only the anti-Trump comments that are reported as abuse.
I just want to say that I would never delete or censor any Anti-Trump comments you might make in any thread that I control April. I welcome your input and encourage you to post your arguments about why Trump would be such a terrible choice.
Have at it. And enjoy it. I certainly enjoy your gyrations along with bags St Vitus dance.
You know one of my favorite scenes in the movies is at the beginning of "The Wild Bunch." As
Pike Bishop and Dutch Engstrom and their gang ride into town before the robbery they pass a group of children in the street. They are torturing a scorpion. You see the vile and hateful scorpion is being devoured and destroyed by a bunch of ants. Low class ants. The kids are watching. And laughing. Its like that.
Keep up the good work sweet sister.
I'm kinda surprised anyone cares. I mean - I am almost surprised I care, but the idea that people are afraid of thoughts and ideas that are different from their own, threatened by them words on a page! and then move to "delete" (and yes - reporting is deleting) - is amazing coming from the same people who decried this behavior coming from the left.
All views are welcome at any thread I control.
Except for the lawnboy.
Other than that anything goes.
I just want to say that I would never delete or censor any Anti-Trump comments you might make in any thread that I control April. I welcome your input and encourage you to post your arguments about why Trump would be such a terrible choice.
Thank you Troop. that respect for free speech goes right back to you!
I don't think people are afraid. I do think that people abuse the report function all the time. It is not fair if you were singled out and censored. Nothing you have ever said here is deserving of that treatment.
Mocking derision and side splitting laughter sure. But deletion and reporting no.

"with a crowbar! some of the the Trumpsters really are out of control brown shirted rage filled psychopaths.
AprilApple
No confidence in your candidate? Where is your backbone?
How much rage and obsession do you feelz? want to kill me? I bet you do. ..
AprilApple
How many video games do you play all day long?"
Yeah, the preceding are some of "April's" kinder and gentler rants. Somehow she forgot to include those.
I could go on, but what's the point - she is in love with seeing her name in the comment thread.
Abuse is too kind to describe what she does over there, but Insty gets what he deserves.
I love that you and bags love to present the establishment viewpoint and marshal all the shopworn arguments that the mainstream media and the conservative whore pundits use to attack the Big Guy. It is important that we hear from the aristocrats as the cart approaches for the ride to the inevitable denouncement of the ancien regime.
I think I saw rccomal knitting in another tread. Just sayn'
DBQ - the real trolls are the report abuse abusers. I post under one name. Funny how the real internet trolls post under many different names. (which is fine by me because I'm a free speech - privacy absolutist)
I think it's important to take a stand for free speech.
Oh crap. Now she is going to be pissed at me again.
I hope she was wearing her tin foil hat.
AprilApple
"with a crowbar! some of the the Trumpsters really are out of control brown shirted rage filled psychopaths.
The "with a crowbar" was a quote from some other commentator. I wonder who?
Sometimes I hate myself. I am such a douche. Oh well. That's almost a requirement for a Trump voter. Am I right or what?
"How many video games do you play all day long?"
I forgot about that one. That was good.
Sixty is exposing my mind crimes.
Trump voters don't play video games.
We watch Japanese anime porn all day long. Get it right.
I fact I just saw one where the Donald had a three way with Melania and the Hello Kitty bitch that was amazing!
No one could ever accuse you of "mind crimes".
Someone named Ed 2 posted this... kinda violent. Funny - no one reported it as abuse?
Trump is not a candidate.
Trump is a crowbar, to beat the establishment with.
Whump. Whump. Whump. Whump. Whump. Whump.
about as attractive and compelling as clogging the toilet in your guest's home to make a point.
I meant your clogging the toilet in your host's home to make a point.
I remember when Instapundit did not allow comments. This petty stuff, from ALL sides, is probably why and I wouldn't be surprised if the comments were shut off again.
It is like having a dinner party in your house and a few of the guests get drunk, decide to fight with each other, begin trashing the house, slinging garbage....I'm gonna throw the whole lot of them out, including the respectful guests. Party's OVER!!!
It's funny when Trump goes all anti-PC, ya's love it. (and I do to some of the time)
When I push back, twice as hard, against those who want to stomp on free speech, I get nothing but crap.
(do too)
Troop - you're one in a million and even if I think your nuts and you think I'm nuts, and I don't get you - I adore your crazy NY attitude.
I'm not clogging the toilet. Everyone is free to post stuff on top. Instead, they delete me. Golly - how courageous!
I love you too April
But here's the thing. Trump is just like me. Get ready for four years of crazy fun!
He will have enough responsible people around. Ivanka is going to run everything. Don't worry. She is way smarter. And a woman. And an Orthodox Jew. We will be fine.
Start resisting and accept the Trump!
I don't know DBQ. Everybody fighting and getting drunk and breaking shit. That's what I call a
party.
Didn't you ever see the "Quiet Man?"
I'd rather elect some of you to office. Troop, DBQ -- tops in my book... in the smarts and common sense department.
I'm not sucking up - it's all true. I wouldn't be here if I didn't like you guys. I don't even care if you drive me crazy. and you have. ;)
I used to do that every freaking night in the 1980's!
Memories. Misty water colored memories of the way we were!
I've only ever been impressed with Ivanka. She is smarter than her dad.
That's the thing. She will be the Valarie Jarret of the Trump administration. In fact I think Trump will have a very strong administration. With a bunch of people who have never been in government before who will do good things.
It won't be all the usual suspects.
Of course he will have some politicians.
He is going to sic Chris Christie on Hillary. He is going to go after her like she was a bag of donuts.
I don't know DBQ. Everybody fighting and getting drunk and breaking shit. That's what I call a party.
LOL Trooper. Me too, but not at my house. That's why I used to hang out at biker bars :-)
April, you have not been deleted. Your comments have not been deleted. Being overly dramatic is not a good way to go through life.
Are you done lecturing me now, Sixty?
You know who else likes to lecture... Obama.
Titus, is that you?
True DBQ. That's why I love Irish Bars. To get my Irish on.
Speaking of biker bars, DBQ, did you ever go to St. James Infirmary on Moffet in Mt. View? It was filled with memorabilia from the prop department of, was it Mack Sennett's studio? Something like that. An unforgettable experience, even if I can't remember where the decor came from. Beer must have been involved.
@ Sixty
No I didn't hang out much in the Mtn View area. It sounds really cool though. Is it still there? I might check it out next time I'm though that area to visit with family.
When in SF, in my misspent youth, I spent much of my time at the Abbey Tavern and the Little Shamrock, which was just around the corner from where I lived. Irish bars. They are still around. I sang and played with an Irish group at that time for a bit. It was really fun. Neighborhood bars.....like Cheers....everyone knows your name. There was also a really nice gay bar in that Sunset neighborhood that had some good jazz and piano music...Golden Grommet. It is gone now but what a nice relaxing spot.
Later when I moved to the NE part of the state it was shit kicker western saloons and biker type bars. For the music, dancing, pool and just all around good times....except for the occasional fight or two.
Geeze....I sound like quite the alki don't I :-)
I don't think St. James is still extant - I first went there in '72 and since I had a friend who tended bar there I went back a couple of times. But fighting was kind of the thing some patrons were interested in. I could tell a story about a flirty waitress who was trying to get her biker boyfriend jealous, and just how close we came to getting jumped that night, but the guy cooled down and no blood was spilled.
But that got me to thinking - I really haven't been to many bars in the past 50 years. There was The Bar, in Woodstock - that was a good one - went there in '68. Benny's in the town in Maryland that I used live in, The Rusty Scupper in Sunnyvale, where a woman I liked was a waitress, the Saint Francis Yacht Club, once again, I knew a woman who worked there, and that's about it. Never been in an Irish bar, although I did go into a whisky shop in Edinburgh, Scotland, so that's almost the same thing, right? Yeah, it's not.
In any case, my liver thanks me for all the clean livin' I have been doing.
Yeah Sixty.
We don't go out much anymore. Our itty town has two bars. About once a month or maybe twice we go on a Saturday afternoon. Usually there are golfers or fishermen there, winding down after their day on the rivers or at the links. There is always someone we know to chat with and the bar tenders know what we drink without having to ask. There are also some very nice lodges in the area with restaurants and bars attached, again for golfers, fly fishermen and hunters from out of the area who generally fly in on their private jets and planes. Those places are fun to go to on a Sat or Sunday. People from out of the area who are interesting to visit with while having some cocktails and snacks (I can't spell hors douvers so snacks it is). Great calamari and crab cakes in season. I guess we provide the local color for them. LOL.
Mostly we enjoy the view from our deck, in good weather, and have cocktails before dinner while sitting out there.
THAT... is a beautiful view.
Thanks April
It was early spring and the trees had not leafed out yet. Whenever life gets too crazy and stressful, we sit and remind ourselves that THIS is what it is really all about. Screw all that other stuff.
Sixty, Made my day seeing you commenting here.
It was a fun thread. Once again, Trooper York's commentary captured essence, drew a crowd, and solicited a host of responses, including a ChipAhoy rant that made me laugh, with DBQ hitting the nail on the head and the heart of the matter one more time. Plus a good back and forth on the nature of abusive commentary and deletion. Something for everyone, with a pause to take in The View!
Overnight I remembered another bar I went to once - Raffles, in Singapore. It is required that when you are in Singapore that you go to Raffles. I did. I had a beer. Talked to woman who was in country with her husband who sold agricultural equipment. It was nice to speak English with an American after being overseas for weeks.
DBQ - what direction was that picture taken from - I thought you were closer to the base of Mt. Shasta, in the shadow of the volcano, but clearly I misunderstood.
Our deck faces the east. Looking at the sunrise. Most areas have nice view of Mt Shasta. We are about 70 miles away though.
Here is a Mt Shasta from a friend's deck. We don't have such a nice view of the mountain from our property. It sort of peeks out behind the other mountains.
Two sunrise photos Sunrise through the snow clouds and another snowy day sunrise
:-)
Thanks for posting those pictures, DBQ - they are great. It's been over 30 years since I saw Shasta from ground level and I must say, I had forgotten just what a magnificent mountain it is.
