The people who are shouting the loudest about instituting more gun control haven't got a freaking clue what they are talking about.
They don't know the difference between and automatic weapon and a semi automatic. They think a .22 caliber rifle is the same as a .223 semi automatic AR 15. They think that you don't need a background check or waiting period at a gun show.
They have no understanding about guns or the existing laws.
All the gun control laws and other hurdles that they propose will do nothing to keep illegal guns off the streets or keep illegal guns from the hands of criminals. What they propose will only disarm the law abiding and legal gun owners or turn us INTO criminals.
Actually, unless you're a FFL holder, you can rent a table at a gun show and sell firearms from your personal collection to anyone you want. I've heard that some gun show operators have instituted rules that everyone at their show has to perform background checks. No different than if you want to sell a gun to a friend or neighbor. If you have a FFL, a background check must be performed regardless. No FFL involved, no background check is needed.

It is my understanding that you don't have to be a licensed dealer to show your guns or gun collection at a guns show. HOWEVER, you cannot sell directly to the public if you don't have a license. If you do have a collection and the guns require a check then you do the transaction through a dealer. Just as if he/she were the seller.
Some, few, guns at these shows are antiques or collectibles and are exempt from background checks.
Maybe that is just my state. In Calif if you want to sell a gun to a private party you are supposed to go through a dealer for the transaction. Of course, man people and ALL CRIMINALS don't do this.
California is the equivalent of another country. Lots of online gun dealers refuse to do business there as well as IL, NY, NJ and a couple of others because of their silly rules. Here in the USA, gun sales can proceed as I described.

You cannot sell a weapon unless you hold an FFL of some class. There are various classes of FFL's. If you sell a weapon as a private party to another private party, you must take that weapon to an FFL for a private party transfer. Now, you can perform an intrafamilial transfer to a spouse or sibling or parent, but that is a whole different ball of wax. Sure, you can illegally sell a gun to anyone, but that's bad news if you get caught.
@Methadras Got back late, so don't know if you'll see this, but IIRC, you live in So. CA and you just described how the law works in CA. Those laws don't apply where I live or in most states between the coasts. I've been a competitive shooter most of my life and am quite familiar with this stuff. I'd never put my collection of firearms in jeopardy by breaking the law concerning their sale. I'd add some add'l. info., but I have to cut this short as I'm on my way to a firearms auction, for real.
Yeah, sorry, that was my error, I neglected to add that what I said is in California. I shoot, just not competitively. My understanding has always been that if you are selling guns at a show, you are holding an FFL of some kind.

I remember "the gun show loophole" from the Clinton days. It's not like if it existed they haven't had a chance to shut it down.
If they fixed it, they couldn't use it to bitch about guns. Of course it doesn't really exist in a practical sense, but that's not the point.
A Republican should say he'll fix it. Only those in the know would realize that means doing nothing.
