Remembrance of Things Pabst- Oy my Yiddisher Pickle Edition

The best thing about New York Jewish Values is the food. The pastrami. The Matza Ball soup. The knish. The Yiddisher pickle.

Here I am at Ben's Kosher Deli in the garment center. We were out shopping at the show and we always stop at Ben's. I recommend it to you the next time you are in New York. It is not famous like Katz's or the Carnegie or any of the other rip off tourist traps. It is where your everyday members of the tribe go.

This was right after my heart thingy so I had to be careful about what I ate. So I carefully ate a whole freaking sandwich and a knish. They didn't have to the good square knishes because the company that makes them was on strike so there was a knish drought that was terrible.

Sinead O’Connor has been found “safe and sound” in Dublin after posting an ominous suicide note-type message to Facebook.

In the lengthy note, the 48-year-0ld Grammy-winning singer wrote that she suffered “appalling cruelty” from her family after undergoing an unspecified surgical procedure in August.

“This week has broken me,” O’Connor wrote. “The withholding of my babies from me without any sound reason by their fathers, Frank and Donal, and by Jake and the rest of my family, is a horrific set of betrayals. And has been going on since I had my surgery.”

The “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer said she had “taken an overdose” because “there is no other way to get respect.”

I have a vivid memory of being in the darkened basement at a neighbor's house, watching one of those flickering light bulbs and listening to "American Woman" by The Guess Who. I must have been around 11 or 12. That 7-Up commercial had a big influence on boys my age. We were all going into 6th grade and taking our first shop class. It seemed like everybody wanted to make a lamp out of an old can or bottle. I used an empty fifth of "Southern Comfort" which I retrieved from a dumpster at the famous Club Tavern. The instructor in shop class (we called it "industrial arts") taught us to safely drill holes through glass and also a bit of wiring. The light bulbs were available at places like the Moon Fun Shop on State St. (right next to the old Capitol Theater). I threw out my lamp long ago but wish I still had it.

And I was wrong about the song used in the commercial. I've looked in vain for a version of that commercial using "American Woman." This is how I/we misremember things: mixing our reality with commonality and then shaping a new memory.
