"Zimbabwe park warns it may shoot 200 ‘surplus’ lions now that big game hunters are staying home"

National Post: The outcry over Walter Palmer’s killing of Cecil drove other big-game hunters away from Zimbabwe, fearful they too would attract the ire of the public.  But in what is being described as a side effect of the affair, Zimbabwe’s largest wildlife area says it now finds itself suffering from an overpopulation of lions.

Bubye Valley Conservancy has more than 500 lions, the largest number in Zimbabwe’s diminishing wildlife areas.  It has warned that its lion population has become unsustainable and that it may even have to cull around 200 as a result of what is being called “the Cecil effect.”

"A petition currently circulating the web is calling for an online retailer to remove a costume that critics say mocks and profits from the July 1 killing of Zimbabwe’s beloved Cecil the Lion."

Minnesota Dentist Walter Palmer has admitted to killing the 13-year-old lion, saying he regrets killing such an important animal but notes he paid Zimbabwe guides to secure all the permits and help him track the lion, which led him to believe the hunt was legal.

"I was sick to my stomach when I saw the costume," Harley said in a news release. "The costume is in bad taste and makes light of what was a tragic and inhumane killing.”

A Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume has also become controversial this year.

"Cecil the lion's brother Jericho shot dead by poachers in Zimbabwean park"

"Johnny Rodrigues, Chairman for Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, said in a statement: 'It is with great sadness and regret that we report that Jericho was shot dead at 4pm this afternoon."

'We have no further details but will advise as soon as we know more.'
