Mr. Putin said Russia would do everything it could to "ensure that an objective understanding of what happened becomes available to the Russian public," but reiterated his stance that Ukraine was at fault.

"This tragedy wouldn't have occurred if there were peace in that country, or in any case, if hostilities had not resumed in southeast Ukraine," he said at a Cabinet meeting on the economy, according to a Kremlin statement. News Reports: Malaysian Plane lost contact, may have been shot down

"The Malaysia Airlines plane, which was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was travelling at an altitude of 10km (6.2 miles) when it was shot down, Russia's Interfax reported."

The Boeing 777 was brought down by a Buk ground-to-air missile, an adviser to the Ukrainian interior ministry quoted by the news agency said.

Several videos apparently filmed in the area, none of which Sky News has been able to independently verify, show plumes of thick, black smoke rising high into the air.

A Reuters correspondent at the scene said he could see the wreckage of a burning aircraft and bodies on the ground.
