'Whites Had Ghettos,Too'

The following story comes from a remarkable out-of-print 1971 book called "I, Pig" and is subtitled "or how the world's most famous cop, me, is fighting city hall." The book was transcribed by Paul Neimark from taped recordings of Jack Muller. I blogged some of Muller's thoughts on policing the Chicago conventions in 1952 and in 1968.

The following excerpt is the opening salvo in the book and helps explain events which shaped Muller's character:
For me, World War II began in 1928.
In 1931, at eight-and-a-half years of age I was stopped on the way to Hebrew school by a gang of Dago toughs and ordered to suck their pricks if I wanted to make it to schul that day.
In 1936 I had the toughest hood on the west side of Chicago tell me to get out of town within twenty-four hours or get dumped on a pile of ashes in the alley.
In 1943 I stood frozen while a horde of Japanese dive bombers spewed bullets between my legs, felt my intestines go to dry ice when we were torpedoed and dozens of my buddies died just yards from where I was.
But those times I knew how to fight. In fact, I learned goddam soon how to battle the world's dirt with the dirtiest fighting I ever saw.
But in 1928 I was helpless.

Chicago Pd....both the show and the department...just bullshit.

There is another show in the Dick Wolf stable about Chicago called Chicago PD. The premise of the show is that crooked cop Sergeant Hank Voight is sprung from jail in a deal with Internal Affairs to head the Intelligence Unit and collect information on other crooked cops. His watchdog is Antionio Dawson the brother of firefighting Mary Sue Gabby from Chicago Fire.

Anyhoo when you watch this show they violate the civil rights of every suspect every episode. They beat on them, torture them, bring them to their cellar where they tune them up. Sometimes they even kill them and cover it up. Obviously how liberals like Wolf see the cops. He thinks thats how the cops operate. Mostly it is sloppy storytelling. It is much easier to beat information out of a suspect instead of the hard leg work and investigation that cops often have to do to solve cases.

Why is this important? The Faternal Order of Police is warning that Chicago is going to explode this summer. The level of disrespect and violence directed at the cops by the savages emboldened by "Black Lives Matters" have led to the cops pulling back. Not on the beatings and illegal interrogations that are isolated incidents at best. They are pulling back on normal  interactions with the public that can lead to stopping crime. Community policing.

The Tiny Dancer is claiming that the cops have gone "Fetal." "We have allowed our Police Department to get fetal, and it is having a direct consequence" Rahn Emanuel said last year. What did he and people like Bill DeBlasio expect? That the cops are going to  put their lives and their pensions and their families on the line to stop one savage from killing another. Emanuel doesn't care. Obama doesn't care about his hometown. The Black Lives Matters crowd support the criminals and think enforcing the law is racist. Reap what you sow. The liberal mindset illustrated in things like ChicagoPD has led to an agitprop agenda that has made effective law enforcement impossible.  Every mook has a cellphone and starts a riot at every arrest. At every traffic stop. There is no margin for error. For human mistakes. You have to perfect every time. So safety first. It is a human response.

Chicago is going to burn this summer. The cops are going to pull back. Ferguson Rules.

"Emails Show Coordination Between Chicago PD, Mayor’s Office Over Laquan McDonald Shooting"

[A]ccording to the AP, there was email correspondence between Emanuel’s office, the police, and the independent police review board Emanuel set up in which there were concerns about how bad it would be for the city if this became a story.
The head of the Independent Police Review Authority emailed in March about sending witness interview transcripts to the law department so they could use them for settlement negotiations.
And in May, when a spokesman for the review board asked Emanuel about doing interviews (since there was some media interest in the case), an Emanuel spokesman said that they need to “tread lightly” if the focus is on the specifics of the case.
That same spokesman also sent out another email expressing his frustration with how the––again, independent––review board didn’t go along with what he said about one particular media inquiry.
How is Benghazi like Chicago?... Bonus if you can put it in Samuel L Jackson words ;)

San Bernardino is no Rahm Rock of Gibraltar

"As protests grew in the streets of Chicago, two state representatives introduced a bill that would make it possible for a recall campaign against Emanuel."
The bill, HB 4356, was introduced by representatives La Shawn K. Ford and Mary E. Flowers, a representative for Ford’s office confirmed to BuzzFeed News.
Ford and Flowers are both fellow Democrats, as is Emanuel.
The bill was introduced after a new poll showed support for the Chicago mayor has declined significantly, with a disapproval rating of 67% and just more than half of those polled in favor of recalling him from office.

A Call for Rahm to resign

"THERE’S been a cover-up in Chicago. The city’s leaders have now brought charges against a police officer, Jason Van Dyke, for the first-degree murder of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. But for more than a year, Chicago officials delayed the criminal process, and might well have postponed prosecution indefinitely, had it not been for a state court forcing their hand."
They prevented the public from viewing crucial incriminating evidence — first one police car’s dashboard camera video; now, we learn, five such videos in total. And these senior officials turned a blind eye to the fact that 86 minutes of other video surveillance footage of the crime scene was unaccountably missing...
The video of a police shooting like this in Chicago could have buried Mr. Emanuel’s chances for re-election. And it would likely have ended the career of the police superintendent, Garry F. McCarthy.
And so the wheels of justice virtually ground to a halt. Mayor Emanuel refused to make the dash-cam video public, going to court to prevent its release. The city argued that releasing the video would taint the investigation of the case, but even the attorney general of Illinois urged the city to make it available...
Meanwhile, the state’s prosecutor, Ms. Alvarez, concluded that there had been no evidence of tampering when police officers allegedly erased 86 minutes of video footage from Burger King surveillance cameras close to the location of Mr. McDonald’s shooting by Officer Van Dyke. The missing footage was from 9:13 to 10:39 p.m. — bracketing the time when Mr. McDonald was shot (around 9:50 p.m.).
City leaders did everything in their power to keep the homicide from the public as long as possible. Indeed, Mr. Van Dyke was indicted only after the forced release of the videos...
There is good reason to appoint an independent commission to investigate the conduct of these public servants. But frankly, at this point, who would trust Chicago’s political institutions or criminal justice system?...
An investigation would create further delay in justice and distract our attention from the real issues at hand: the senseless death of a 17-year-old, and the systemic problems of excessive police violence and lack of accountability.
Rather than hold hearings, investigate and perhaps prosecute its leaders, the city of Chicago needs to restore trust. These officials no longer have the public’s confidence. They should resign.
UPDATE: Rahm: "We have a process called the election. The voters spoke"

WH says @POTUS has seen the video of police shooting of Laquan McDonald, but withholding comment so as not to interfere in judicial process.
How come the Ferguson officials didn't this accommodation?

Don’t Follow Leaders, Watch The Parkin’ Meters

Heh.  Out of all the symbols Mickey Kaus chooses to symbolize class inequality in NYC, he chose double-parked black cars of investment bankers. Read the whole thing.

Jack Muller was mid-century Chicago cop who got famous for enforcing parking laws against the rich and privileged. His memoir "I Pig: Or How The World's Most Famous Cop, Me, Is Fighting City" had numerous parking anecdotes. If I had the book on Kindle (if the out-of-print book were even on Kindle) I could word-search "parking" and find the best one. As it is, here is the first one (from 1946):
I remember the first ticket I ever gave. I was working the Argyle Street district on the north side, which was mostly a tough section then. I was sticking the ticket under the windshield wiper of the illegally parked car when a guy about forty ran out of a building and grabbed me.
'Don't you know who the hell's car that is, you dumb sonfabitch!' he greeted me.
The car was his, it turned out, and he was a petty local politician who acted like he was Harry Truman (I'll tell you about him later). I left the ticket anyway. The following week he tried to get it thrown out, but I wouldn't go along. So we came to court together the next month.
And the judge threw it out.
It was only a parking ticket, but it depressed the hell out of me. It was one thing to be insulted and manhandled if you were going to get your day in court. But if the judge was going to humiliate you and treat you like scum--that was something else.
Muller goes on:

Gangs and Politicians in Chicago: An Unholy Alliance

Violent gang crime in Chicago has been a constant feature of news reports for years.  Most of it is gun-related crime; homicides caused by people shooting other people.  We hear of school kids being killed, toddlers and families in parks being killed, people walking on the street being killed, gang bangers being killed by other gang bangers.  The number of homicides is especially high in Chicago's gang-ridden south side.

In 2012, three hundred ten American service members were killed in Afghanistan, while there were five hundred thirty-two homicides in Chicago.

The cause of most of the violent crime is drug dealers, or more specifically, organized gangs of drug dealers fighting over turf, territory, and money.  A lot of money, millions and millions of dollars.  Yet Chicago has a large and powerful police department with more than 12,000 sworn officers.  How can such a high level of violet crime persist in a City with a huge law enforcement presence?

Much, much more after the jump.  You'll want to read it all.
