Before the students pled guilty the SJWs at Oberlin had already sprung into action. Led by Meredith Raimondo, the students declared Gibson's racist. They described the family-run business as having a history of racism. They organized protests that interfered with Gibson's conducting business. They behaved aggressively and poorly. They ended contracts between the school and the business. They mischaracterized the business as racist to fellow students and to new students seriously affecting the business' bottom line.
Meredith Raimondo. She seems like such a nice person. Here's how she talks:
Roger Copeland, a retired Oberlin College professor of theater and dance, was in the courtroom and seemed ecstatic after the jury came back with their verdict. Prof. Copeland is somewhat famous in the courtroom for getting this response on a Raimondo text to co-workers after a letter-to-the editor he wrote was critical of the school for their handling of the Gibson’ affair. “Fuck him,” Raimondo responded in a text message about Copeland. “I’d say unleash the students if I wasn’t convinced this needs to be put behind us.”
Oberlin lawyers took up a strange defense. They characterized the Bakery business as being the value of 1/2 an Oberlin semester.
The bakery had been in business since late 19th century, across 4 generations, through two world wars, the depression and great recession. They had a staff of twelve employees. The protests and the characterization as racism ruined their business.
The settlement of 11 million is just the beginning. The College is now open to twice that amount in punitive damages. The total amount could be as high as 33 million.
There are several aspects of this case of interest to Legal Insurrection readers. The post linked above received over 200 comments. William Jacobson, the owner of Legal Insurrection held exclusive interviews with the owners of Gibson's bakery. His perspective is unique among all other reporting. You cannot do any better than to read what Jacobson has put up.
Jacobson followed this case from the very beginning. There are several posts addressing the case over the last two years. Presently there is another post about Oberlin insurer likely to reject coverage for the Gibson Bakery $11 million verdict.
And another post about When a powerful institution like Oberlin College says you are racist, you are doomed.
And another post about this case reflecting the disconnect of Higher Education from the lives of most Americans.
Across all these posts on the Oberlin vs Gibson's dispute a clear picture is drawn of Oberlin as a place of such extreme liberal privilege so far removed from their community that they behave like the local businesses don't even count.
But when you look at them you realize they're actually just a bunch of dopes.
And now they have the reality of that punch them right in the face.
Will they learn the right lesson from this dragged out error?
They're a college. A place of learning. So of course not!
They are foremost liberals. They'll lean what they want. And that's not anything society has to teach them. Their attitude is they teach society, not society teach them. They've already shown the precise wrong response. Their communication about the verdict has everything precisely reversed. All this is at Legal Insurrection.
Although there are a lot of comments to go through over there, and although comments there are usually delightfully perceptive and erudite, this time they do not contribute much to comprehension beyond what William Jacobson lays out. They're mostly gloating and congratulating.

Why do the upper and upper-middle class parents fork over scores of thousands of dollars to send their children to communist holes like Oberlin? I know, that's like asking why the sun rises in the east or why the sky is blue. They just do. And will continue to. I actually do know the answer: status. Oberlin is a name school and that's ALL that counts.
Meredith Raimondo should be fired (and sued herself). What a tool she is.
Insurance won’t cover this nor (obv) the punitive damages which should be dealt out next week. This could put Oberlin out of business. Teachable moment.
Bet she ain't smilin' now.
@Amartel: Oberlin has a $770m endowment. $33m would hurt a lot, but wouldn't put them out of business.
I love it when a news story has a happy ending.
It aint over until the fat Hawaiian judge sings.
Maybe their fat assed "Girls" alumnus will bail them out. I would rather see the money come out of the Endowment.
Progressives are evil.
Meredith Raimondo - ruin her life, please.
She's also a Hillary supporter, I would bet.
Ruin her life, please. NOW.
Liberal? They are not liberals. They are progressive leftwing totalitarian fascists.
Fuck you, Meredith Raimonda. Fuck you. and fuck your evil leftwing university.
Raimondo and Hawaiian judge are both unaccountable and protected from reality and therefore are free to indulge their destructive and vindictive flights of fancy.
I bet Oberlin doesn't fire her.
