She should be encouraged to apologize for saying such a distasteful utterance on behalf of her employer and told that if she wants to say things like it, to do so with her own private accounts, on her own time.

Amartel, it is not a Yay? She should be free to express her opinion, but so should everyone else. But let's breakdown what she did.
She told us her opinion, and told us "f*** outta hear (sic) with your nice words", which is a long way of writing, "now you shut up". She doesn't want others to express their opinions.
That's childish, typical, and not a job firing response, but she wasn't fired until she escalated the discussion by bringing in her employer and employment status (and also not shown in Chip's post but causing the harassment of other education institutions). At that point, she brought in Fresno State as her security blanket and touted it as some buff that protected her speech. When you think your employer is the protector of your speech, you have made a mistake as to how your rights are granted and protected. We (everyone) didn't make that decision, she did.
So Chip's correct, she was hoisted on her own petards. Or as another has pointed out, they won't like living under the new rules they imposed.
So she was fired? I'm not really paying attention.

I don't know if she was fired, but my understanding if Fresno State did publically state they disagree with her sentiments both towards Barbara Bush and the protections her tenure provides. In short, they don't interpret her tenure as providing free speech, as she does.
Fired? No, paid leave until the heat dies down then she's back to molding the minds of the yoots.

OBVIOUSLY, she's free to say what she wants on her own time. Obviously. (Although there is some hypocrisy on that issue, left and right, but it doesn't make it less true.)

What is interesting about this situation is that she believes she's "winning," and is quite pleased with herself, lol-ing away, because she got a lot of attention and has signaled to the horde that she's down with The Cause and can't be fired despite the fact that many find her comments offensive.
BUT is it really "winning" in the larger sense, ie., where The Cause is concerned?

I'm happy she's getting her comeuppance. Yay. That this will be misinterpreted by many as a restriction to free speech or method to restrict free speech, is not a Yay to me. I'd like to see these people live with the new rules they imposed, so they understand why the rules need to be ended. Applying the new rules isn't much of a Yay.
