Camille Paglia Says Puberty Blockers for Transgender Kids Are ‘Criminal Violation of Human Rights’

Via Instapundit:  In an interview with The Weekly Standard, Paglia broke another liberal taboo this week by saying parents and doctors who give transgender children puberty blockers are engaging in “a criminal violation of human rights.”
A number of articles have appeared in recent years detailing the experiences of parents whose children undergo hormone blocking therapy in order to stop the onset of puberty. Slowing these changes, the thinking goes, gives the child more time to think about whether he or she truly wants to transition and can make any feelings of gender dysmorphia milder. One doctor compared a child who blocks puberty as starting from “a blank slate.”

Paglia disagrees. Citing the fact that the “long term effects [of puberty blockers] are unknown,” she told TWS‘s Jonathan Last that the transgender fad is in part a marketing ploy by the pharmaceutical industry “in order to create a permanent class of customers who will need to take prescribed hormones for life.”

“It is certainly ironic how liberals who posture as defenders of science when it comes to global warming (a sentimental myth unsupported by evidence) flee all reference to biology when it comes to gender. Biology has been programmatically excluded from women’s studies and gender studies programs for almost 50 years now. Thus very few current gender studies professors and theorists, here and abroad, are intellectually or scientifically prepared to teach their subjects,” she said.

Even disputing the very possibility of gender reassignment surgery, Paglia told Last that “the cold biological truth is that sex changes are impossible. Every single cell of the human body remains coded with one’s birth gender for life.” That pronouncement, however, didn’t stop her from saying she describes herself as transgender.

Don't know about that, but it's certainly child abuse in the name of some wacked-out Lefty wanting to be one of the In Crowd.

So that would mean that hormone-blocking therapy is anti-sex change.

Maybe there's something I'm missing.

I don't know why Paglia gets so much attention. She babbles on and sometimes changes her mind mid sentence.

Gender identity politics is a violation of human rights.

I don’t buy her claim that Big Pharma is pushing the current trans-weirdness. That sounds nutty. But I’m not sure what actually is the cause of this modern craze of gender strangeness. I am a big supporter of people pursuing hapiness, and its none of my business what form your happiness takes , as long as it does not hurt anyone.

But was being trans always out and public and in your face like this? All of these people coming out of the woodwork announcing they are trans is something new for our society. It seems more likely to be some kind of attention getting syndrome. Or an avoidance of admitting that you are actually gay. Or fear of intercourse itself so you invent an excuse for not having sex. Or a insecurity in one’s own sexuality. Or a deep dissatisfaction with self image and the only pathology that offers a solution is to destroy the self and become a new person. All seem more likely than a flaw in your DNA that made you the wrong gender.

I think labeling pre-puberty persons with any type of gender definitions is wrong. A 10 year old can’t be gay. Or trans, or bi, they are pre-sexual beings and I do not like the sexualization of children. Let the nancy boys be what they want to be, and let the tom-boys be what they want to be. But don’t medicate them to delay puberty. God help these poor kids who are going to wind up being twisted around with chemicals- and when they come out the other side are still going to have to learn the same lesson that every other well adjusted person has learned : You gotta love the skin that you are in. You can’t love another unless you can love yourself. Change the things you can change, but accept the things that you cannot.

Those parents should tell those kids "You're not gonna turn into a freak on my dime!"

In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.....okay, one eyed woman is queen.

People are s-o-o-o grateful that this self-professed feminist can string some sane thoughts together. But you're right about the disconnectedness of her "thinking."

Paglia does ramble, but she is IMHO an intellectually honest, free thinker. That puts her on the endangered species list.

Insanity. Reality is real, no matter how much you might not like it.
