Protect yourself at all times....Marquis of Queensbury Rules.

What it’s like being an openly gay boxer, in 3 terrible tweets

New York Post By Mark W. Sanchez November 27, 2016

Jabs get lobbed at Orlando Cruz seemingly without end. Especially when he hits the canvas.
The Puerto Rican boxer, who in 2012 became the first active fighter to come out as gay, was stopped in the eighth round by WBO lightweight champion Terry Flanagan on Saturday in Cardiff, Wales. He was also set back on Twitter, where those within his own industry made homophobic remarks at his expense.
Before Cruz, 35, dropped to 25-5-1, getting denied a world title, British pro boxer Frankie Gavin reflected on whom he wanted to win, revealing more about himself and his friends than the boxers between the ropes.
“I have nothing against gay people have gay friends,” Gavin said, as his nearly 50,000 followers waited for the “but” that would come. “But if I lost to a gay lad I would get bantered for life by pals so Flanagan has to win.”
Gavin deleted the tweet as social media venom was directed his way. Peter Fury was not as concerned with the backlash.

The uncle and trainer of former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, who has problems himself, was unapologetic in dancing on Cruz’s grave as he lost. To Fury, Flanagan’s victory was a victory for heterosexuals.
For Cruz, who has become an icon within the gay community, the cheap shots likely are just more blows that glance off. For four years, he has been an openly gay man within a sport that is sold as a study of unrepentant masculinity.
“Sometimes one, two or three people say, ‘you’re gay, and you’re a boxer… wow,’ Cruz told CNN earlier this week. “Before, when I heard people talking like that, it made me sad. But right now, I teach them. I say, ‘I am gay, but I am a man like you.’ It’s an education.”
(Do youse guys know the story of Emile Grifffith and Benny Paret? It is a famous boxing story. Emilie was gay and in the weigh in for their 1962 fight Benny who was Cuban grabbed his ass and called him a maricon. Emile beat him to death.
This was often a story the old timers used to talk about in Jimmy's Corner this bar I used to hang out in Times Square where the boxing guys always hung out. The concenus was that the referee let it go too long. Griffith had actually been knocked out earlier in the fight but was saved by the bell. Paret had the shit kicked out of him in a couple of other bouts that year and never recovered. This fight led to a lot of changes in the rules about scheduling fights in NY State.
Of course boxing is just about dead now. Like most things it ran a lot better when the Mob ran it. Who knows? Trump has a lot of contacts with made guys. Ya never know.)

I thought the rules don't apply to Puerto Ricans? I didn't say Dominicans, Lem, I said Puerto Ricans.

Speaking of weird I went to see a film today against my better judgment called The Rules Don't Apply, which is a comedy, I guess, based on the weirdness of Howard Hughes. It was directed by and stars Warren Beatty as Hughes, so that like tripled the weirdness factor, for me at least, since I don't get Beatty's weird appeal. I mean I do get it but don't like it. I walked out at the hour mark. Just couldn't take the disconnection any longer. Then I came home and overate in compensation for all that emptiness which I guess was hipness or wryness or coolness or something......

Those Dominican jerk off initiations aren't gay...are they?

The tweet likely is a simple statement of fact.

I wonder when we are going to see this stuff in mixed martial arts and the UFC?

They seem to have taken over boxing's spot.

I don't think most care about the gay stuff, or at least ignore it, provided it is not in people's faces.

But if you are a fighter, you have to win.

The big question for me is whether or not Troop's "Marquis of Queensbury Rules" cite in the headline was intentional. If it was then I give him a win on points.

Speaking of gay and socking each other, I noticed on Daily Caller an advertisement disguised as a news item for HappySocks.com. They're all wild and crazy socks for 40% off. It's a great way to add a touch of ridiculousness to your dead serious image, a way to bring it all down a notch and disarm aggression. Their little boxes of 4 pairs will make great gifts too. I know how you are, inclined to reject this idea out of hand, but I'm telling you, try it, just try it by way of experimentation, and they'll turn out to be your favorite socks. Or whomever you gift them. Here, look. LOOK! I said. Didn't mean to yell, I meant to say just now, you're invited to look. Plus free shipping. A very low cost for such a great experiment, wouldn't you say?

The reason why the Marquis is relevant is that he was part of the libel case that destroyed Oscar Wilde who was banging his son.

Thanks for the response but my question remains unanswered. Unless you're rope-a-doping me.

So how did Wilde get his son, rape or just some gay Irish charm?

Shit gets crazy here sometimes. I'm OK with that. Just that it sends the registers manically turning is all. A good thing, I guess. But can be disconcerting. One should never be complacent, nor without a plan to kill everyone around them. Right? I think so. So we're tooth to tooth I guess.
