Overheard: ndspinelli

"A couple days ago our community organizer lectured the world on how dangerous a man like Trump would be since he does not have knowledge of international relations. To date, I have heard no one lambast Obama on that horseshit comment. In my lifetime, the only Presidents w/ more experience than Trump were Ike and old man Bush. With all the Reality TV shit, people don't make substantive retorts. Maybe I missed a reply from The Egomaniac? But, I've not seen it and I've not seen anything from his lemmings here. But, I have seen sexy photos of a Fox personality. You could put a gun to my head and I would not vote for this buffoon. However, where there is actual substance it is lost in the Reality TV mentality of his campaign." http://comonocreerendios-lem.blogspot.com/2016/04/first-ballot-or-bust-at-gop-convention.html?showComment=1459696625824#c1606908431908258231

When we hear President Pissy lecture us, we must remember this is the individual who thinks Austrian is spoken in Vienna and that you must go to the English Embassy to return the Churchill bust.

And I have made retorts, if not here, then elsewhere. Most of us are usually fully occupied trying to remind the members who have, along with their Messiah, joined the Collective that all their "Resistance Is Futile" gibberish is nonsensical, but trying to get a wall to listen leaves little time for predictable idiocy elsewhere in the Continuum.

Maybe I missed a reply from The Egomaniac?

I think he's a little busy to worry about a lame duck, but, as you say, he has more experience than anybody but Ike and old man Bush, not to mention lots more money, so the buffoon thing is ill-placed. You might try the Holy Roller, Daddy Cruz.

PS They all said Ike and Reagan were buffoons when they entered politics. Eisenhower, in particular, used it to his advantage.

Experience is overrated. Yeah, Old Man Bush had tons of experience combined with the mindset that would make a Mafia Don blush. Temperament is much more important than experience. Ike and MacArthur both had tons of more or less the same experience. It taught Ike to view every enthusiasm thrust at him by lobbyists and special pleaders with suspicion; it taught vainglorious MacArthur nothing.

People who provide nothing but negativity and bile sure have a problem if you are goofing off and having a laugh while still trying to comment about current events in an meataphoric way. Those that can't do...... preach.

Way to stir the pot little Debbie. You would be great on a reality show.

MacArthur learned nothing?

He learned how to get his men from Australia to Japan with 1/3 casualties than it cost to do the Italian campaign, fewer casualties to liberate the Philippines than to liberate Normandy, and how to retake New Guinea and the Solomons with about as many casualties as the Navy sustained taking only the single island of Okinawa.

PS Noticed this in the sidebar:

TOP tells us WI has a history of voting for front-runners in primary contests. Wonder if that's why everybody is still campaigning there rather than NY.

He undercut his Commander In Chief in Korea. He was politically foolhardy to the end.

The difference between people like Trump and Ike and someone like Harry Truman is that they have experience in the real world.

The most valid comparison with a former president is in my view Harry Truman. In fact their politics are pretty similar. They were both know for speaking out of turn and got in trouble for the things they say. They both went bankrupt. They both were Americans first last and always. They both support the working man. Personally they liked to gamble and were not tight ass rigid hypocrites like some lawyers I can name. They make mistakes. In their lives. In their careers. They shoot from the lip. But they have dealt with the real world. Making deals with crooks. Truman with the St Louis mob. Trump with the concrete cartel and Fat Tony Salerno.

So with Trump we are getting a Harry Truman with all the good and bad that entails.

And a lot better offspring in the looks department than Bess Truman.

Okay, I'm going to slink away now. Too many cutesy comments. :^(

You can't vote for only some of the qualities of a candidate. You have to take the whole package.

It's like Tom Brady and Gisele. Now Gisele is a hot piece of bacala. Great t and a. Beautiful face. But reputedly the worst breath in the Western World. So much so that Leo had to dump her. But Tom decided the whole package was worth it.

(Of course this is reality show bullshit so feel free to ignore it and turn the discussion to the balance of payments and the Chinese sad record of currency manipulation, Thank you)

And maybe he stood on principle, unwilling to let his men be killed in a war Truman started, but was afraid to finish.

This is the man who stood up to Franklin Roosevelt when he wanted to gut the Army to pay for the New Deal. "When we lose the next war and the last American soldier lies dying in the mud with an enemy bayonet in his belly and an enemy boot on his throat, I just hope, when he gathers his last breath to spit out his last curse, it's, 'Roosevelt', and not 'MacArthur'".

Foolhardy? Or principled?

We had an Army in '41 because, as Henry Stimson noted at the time, MacArthur saved the Army in '34.

Sounds to me like we could use a few more fools like that in this country.

Yes, it will be most interesting to see him go presidential. At this point in politics I don't think he can do worse than Hillary or Cruz, both hawks. I think it'a a pipe dream he'll build a wall. He might help with tarriffs, some, just for form. My biggest hope, which will likely be dashed, is he will act responsibly in the ME.

I just read the Manchester biography of MacArthur. MacArthur's father was a Civil War hero who won the Battle of Missionary Ridge by disobeying a direct order. MacArthur himself was a WWI hero. In one of his battles, he was ordered to pull his troops back from an area they had successfully occupied. Later he was ordered to retake that ground, and his troops suffered substantial losses during that operation. It was perhaps overdetermined that he should disobey orders........There were cases other than Korea where MacArthur kept his own counsel and things worked out right. Perhaps he would not have been a good president, but he was the most effective and innovative military commander America had in WWII.......The successful American occupation of Japan was due to MacArthur's disregard of Washington's wishes.

What's the Adorno film for? It's the usual leftist putdown of evil capitalism and whitewash of communism.

Gisele has a horse face.

Long may the war between spinelli and Troop continue! Whatever the hell it's about.

Too many other countries are doing the same thing. It's not as anathema it was a few years ago, so you never know - one good mass murder or a terror attack that slipped over the border and public opinion may force it. He's also raised the possibility of Operation Wetback II, so he does have some options.

I just read the Manchester biography of MacArthur

"American Caesar" is a great read. A highly objective bio of the man coming from a Marine who went through the landings - Peleliu, Okinawa - that weren't done the MacArthur way.

My mother gave it to me for Christmas the year it came out.

deborah said...

Maybe, Ed.

Thanks for the recommendations, William and Ed.

I think one of the most interesting things about MacArthur is that his mother stayed in a hotel right outside West Point for the entire time he was at school.

I think that explains a lot about him frankly. You can kind of understand why he had a problem with authority. Just sayn'

It was said they were the only mother and son who attended the Academy.

The issue with Truman was one we also faced in 'Nam and today. If you put people's lives on the line, you're obliged to back them up.

Dubya did, Pissy could care less.

I always go back to the "Old Soldiers" speech (wanted he want to, he could rival Churchill) and the line, "Their last words to me were,'Don't scuttle the Pacific'". Dramatic, but the point was valid.

PS deborah, you won't be sorry if you do read it.

My bride has a thing for Lester Holt. So, we often have on his newscast. I saw Obama make his lecture on that newscast. There was, of course, no pointing out the obvious on Obama's experience. Shit, The Egomaniac has more experience than the last 3 President's combined. Bubba's experience was blowing weed and raping women @ Oxford. W's was crossing the border in Juarez to drink cheap tequila and fuck $5 whores snorting coke off their tits. The community organizer knew NOTHING about foreign countries except for living in Indonesia for a few years. That's where his stepdad tried to turn him into a man and mommy took him back to the grandparents. Now, The Egomaniac says Obama was also born in Kenya but that's Reality TV horseshit.

Giselle Bundchen has horrible breath? That's as devastating as telling a kid that Santa Claus or the tooth fairy don't exist.

Seriously, I think a situation like that would test even my limits. It would be like owning a Maserati that can only be fitted with plastic Big Wheel tires. The trade-off to end all trade-offs.

Trump is a teetotaler and a germaphobe. Those would play into the liberal side of Haidt's pretty BS-y liberal v. conservative morality scales. Purity for Liberals would be health related, e.g., anti-GMO. On the Conservative side it would be anti-gay, anti-extra-marital sex, etc.
