Cruz and Trump spar over "New York values"

"Trump, Cruz clash over eligibility, ‘New York values’ at GOP debate"

Fox News: In perhaps his most withering retort, Trump slammed Cruz for questioning “New York values.” Recalling memories from after 9/11, Trump described the “horrific” clean up and the “smell of death” in the city.

“It was with us for months, the smell,” Trump said. “And everybody in the world loved New York, loved New Yorkers -- and I have to tell you, that was a very insulting statement.”

That was a big mistake by Trump. He went PC, where his support wants him for abolishing the viability of PC in public debate.

He ought to have defended his own NYC values as analytical and pragmatic, instead of going weepy.

Mississippi rebuilt after Katrina with Mississippi values, meaning right-wing. If there are a million victims, right away you have a million helpers. There's nothing 9/11 about it.

Trump loves NY. He went with a right brained response, going back to a moment in memory when he felt overwhelmed by that awareness.

The tip off was his mention of the smell. He was recalling a lived experience.

It took fourteen years to rebuild the Trade Center. 1930's New York values would have done it in a year. During the same time, most of the city of Dubai was built, including the tallest building in the world at nearly 1000 ft taller than the Trade Center, and it was done in less than six years. Even a New York minute takes hours in modern bureaucrat choked America, and New York is a prime example of much of our worst thinking and policy. Cruz was right, except it's not just New York's values - it's modern America's.

I appreciate all the above comments but still missing Trooper York about now.

I don't know how this will go. All I have to add is that- New Yorker's coming together, and everyone across the country with them in thoughts and prayers- is an American value system, not monopolized by one state. The ferry lift of the day, when all boat owners came together to get people off Manhattan- American values.

Charlie Daniels - In America

"From the sound up in Long Island out to San Francisco Bay
And every thing that's in between them is our home
And we may have done a little bit of fighting amongst ourselves
But you outside people best leave us alone

'Cause we'll all stick together and you can take that to the bank
That's the cowboys and the hippies and the rebels and the yanks"

As someone who grew up in NNJ and watched it change (as measured by the height of playground equipment, speed bumps, crosswalk 'bump-outs', and all manner of waste and useless spending), America DOES NOT want NY values. Cruz was right in that regard. The values of Manhattanites (what we mean when we say NY around these parts) are very collectivist.

My dad tells me a story when it comes up from time to time, about how when he was a kid and had just moved to this town- the mayor had told the fedgov to keep their money, we don't need it. He knew that money came with strings. Today? You know.

Ultimately that is why I am moving out of state this year. The good people of NJ are good, and mostly people, but they simply do not value freedom.

I moved out of NJ in 1975, following the job. They used to allow bicycles on interstate shoulders, back when they had interstate shoulders, so my Saturday and Sunday bike rides were across the entire state and back, the back part being on an interstate because I was tired of hills.

Cruz smacked Trump down hard on the birther issue. Trump scored some sob points off of 9/11. To their credit, each applauded/acknowledged the other's rhetorical skill.
I call it a draw.
Still in it: Rubio, Christie.
Losers: Bush, Carson, Carly, that other guy, whatsisname, whoever.

NYers are always trying to one up everyone else, like their values are special or better then everywhere else. I lived in the northeast for six years and can attest, based on empirical knowledge, that that is not the case.

That was a very strong response by Trump. I keep hoping that there's a serious person behind the showmanship and braggadocio and that looked damn real to me.

And it was effective politically as there's still a great deal of sympathy for what New York suffered through on 9/11. The "New York values" line is powerful with much of the electorate (including me) but it has a weak spot and Trump put an arrow right in its heel. An added benefit is that it might also buy Trump a tiny bit of breathing space from the relentless attacks by the New York based media. Very tiny but it can't hurt.

I'd call it his best moment of the campaign.

As reported by the new York Port Authority Trooper York was last seen boarding a small excursion boat for a short day tour with a brunette and a redhead among others.

When he returns I expect his new line of coconut bras to be a big hit.

Cruz did himself no service by questioning regional values. That was a dumb move. Everyone agrees that NE'er values tend to overshadow many presidential races disproportionately, but to go after a whole swath like that I think hurts him.

Dumb move by Cruz, Trump hit it out of the park.

RH makes a good point. Trump and Cruz are both whiney men.

That's OK Meade - you have a whiny socialist or a corrupt old money grubbing hag to root for. yay.

Trump handled it well and Cruz ultimately flubbed it. That said, the response by NYC has been hilariously full of butt-hurt. Fly-over country knows exactly what Cruz meant. I'm not a big Cruz fan, will likely vote for Trump but give me a break. A clear case of NYC being able to dish it out but not take it. You have Guiliani calling for Cruz to apologize for pete's sake.

NYC values are banning soda pop, trans-fats, salts, supporting national donut day, electing a socialist mayor, banning guns, stop and frisk laws because they banned guns and having a Governor who outright calls conservatives "not NY kind of people". Cuomo said anyone pro-gun, pro-life, pro-religion, and anti-gay should leave the state.

So, NYC whiners.... check yourself before you wreck yourselves (by letting in more Muslims).

What a tactic. Writing off the country's strongest and most important city and twenty million as people of poor moral character based solely on where they live.

If you needed any more proof that Cruzie is a political douchenoodle with no true integrity of his own, that was it. Dismissing entire geographical sections (and sucking up to others) is the consummate politician's game. Admitting it out loud proves that you have no values - other than political values.

Anyone who admits to telling tens of millions of Americans that their part of the country isn't worth your political attention totally disqualifies himself from the office of president. The presidency is the office of ALL the people. Presidents don't get to say things like, "I'm president of the entire United States, but for several counties here and there and close to 10% of the nation."

Cruz needs to drop out. Which he would do if he were a decent man.

But he is not a decent man.

He's a robot and a phony. And a slightly evil, twisted twat.

These anger issues, have they ever been looked at, you know, professionally?

I love Cruz. He's the smartest guy up there. He does need some help around the edges with the PC stuff.

Insty linked to "a brillian non-apology apology" by Cruz, while Althouse recorded his response as something "For the Annals of Nonapology.

Meanwhile, someone who owe an apology stops over at Lem's to join the club and chirp about whiney men.

Peggy Noonan, on the second thing Hillary and Cruz are both learning, which according to her is:

...something most people learn by their 20s: It matters what people think of you. It’s important that people have a high opinion of your essential integrity, trustworthiness and good faith. It matters that they like you. Mr. Cruz, when challenged by Mr. Trump, could have used some backup from prominent Republicans, but they didn’t throw him a lifeline. John McCain: “I am not a constitutional scholar on that, but I think it’s worth looking into.” You know why Mr. Cruz had no backup? Because almost no one who works with him likes him. They haven’t experienced him as a trustworthy person of good faith. They waited, as people do, for a chance to hurt him, and when they got it they did.
