What we're seeing is nothing short of dissolution of Western culture. A pope discussing climate change and gay marriage while Christianity disappears from the Middle East even as the Middle East comes up and surrounds Rome. Merkel knows what she is doing, and not the "sad sack apparatchik" described. She knows the future of Germany rests on high immigration to support an aging population, her problem is spelled out quite clearly in numbers, and if that means less Germany and more Islam then so be it. It's that or perish. That is the choice informing Angela Merkel decisions about what to do and what not to do about immigration. The author is right, though, the committee cares nothing about any of that, this is their contribution to the great dissolution we witness. The squandering of birthright. So much of the movement of people initiated by our own politicians, our government's actions and its inactions. Our country really is partly, in many ways largely responsible and really is damned both for doing and for not doing.

That's so fatalistic. It seems bound to fail, only because the influx isn't likely to assimilate. The vaunted German workforce is predicated on values inculcated since childhood. But, the Germans willfully chose to forgo kinder in demographically significant numbers. The prize is a forgone conclusion and it's sad to see Nobel's will dynamited for political expediency.
On the upside, it's not "the future" but rather "a future." Definite vs. indefinite.
Oh and Zuckerberg? What a tool. Let him try and reshape basic freedoms. Eventually all the FaceBook people will catch on and turn his product into the the next AOL.
I have an German coworker who was very upset about the Syrian crisis back home when it first broke. I think she was fueled by social media in the old country. Recently, she confided that the influx will result in a muslim uptick from only about 4% of the population to about 5%.so she's back to normal.
But what about birthrates? I countered.
You never hear much about Merkel's children. Why is that?
We hear same argument here about native birth rates so why not take the $200 Billion we spend [at least] on illegals and offer it as a baby bonus to young legal families to have a baby. We could give $40K or so to each legal baby as a college fund and it would increase birthrate and spur the economy. It's what I call a two-fer. Eliminate financial incentives to illegals [so many of them will pack up and leave] and give the money we save to our own young families.

Merkel is expanding Islam's Zone of Peace: all those formerly infidel places that fall to Islam. So it is correct - from the standpoint of the Western Ruling Elites who are in cahoots with Islam and who determine the prize winner - that she be awarded the Nobel.
You gotta hand it to the Germans. No nation ever tried so hard to have itself annihilated. They have been the most capable, productive people on earth and the one thing they can't quite accomplish is suicide, because they always get someone else to pull the trigger. This time instead of getting someone to shoot them they're just ingesting Anthrax.
Western Civ seems to carry the seeds of its own destruction. Once people become civilized and introspective and nihilistic/fatalistic, or whatever the proper term is, they lose interest in breeding. I think the natural state of Man is war, and if you're not fighting, you don't care. The Crusaders, the jihadis, the Huns, they raped, pillaged, and spread their seed and we have all been intermingling since.
And don't get me started on the TECHNIUM.

That is funny, Deb. Especially the part about it being close. That's kind of my point. The German people have been phenomenal: gifted with intelligence and an incredible knack for organization, invention, and accomplishment, but they also excel at making really catastrophic decisions every now and then. This is probably one of those.
More than anyone the Germans should know how massive immigration of an antagonistic population destroys Civilization.
After all that's what they did to the Roman Empire.
I think if Hitler was around today, he could win the Nobel Peace Prize. With the committee's record of thoughtful choices, I'm sure they would find a way to give it to him for the VW Bug, his love of animals, and contributions to population control.
Was it Hegel's conclusion that the State was the pinnacle of civiization? That the person was subservient to the state?

bagoh, Angela Merkle is not the only Merkle to really fuck up. Fred "Bonehead" Merkle made probably the most costly base running mistake that cost his team[NY Giants] the pennant. I busted my wives family balls every chance I got that Bonehead Merkle was born in their hometown of Watertown, Wi. I hope chick doesn't get offended.
Hope the Muslims have better luck than the last religious minority to live in Germany.......I understand that Germany has had some difficulty assimilating the East Germans into the capitalist ways of west Germany where the jobs are. And Turks who have lived in Germany for two or three generations still feel more Turkish than German. There are a lot of things that can go wrong.......I still like Merkel. Germany will probably do better with a woman with a lot of soft edges than with some hard edged nationalist who wants to restore order and discipline to the country. There are many roads to hell, and she is taking the scenic high road.
