Liberalism in Ruins

Vicror Davis Hanson lays the smackdown and hard.
Survey the wreckage.
The hope-and change therapeutic approach to foreign relations ended logically with historic cuts in defense, lectures about American culpability, pink lines and the end of Syria, farcical Iranian talks, in Libya the short trip from "leading from behind" to Benghazi, the self-induced suicide of Iraq, the empowerment of Putin, a pivot to Asia that invited ridicule, and the charade of war against ISIS.
Wow. Excellent survey but a bit short. That is all international while Obama's focus is on domestic policies. His aim to fundamentally transform America. How has he done?

Hanson continues, there are two saving graces to his misadventures abroad. 1) Each ensuing disaster diverted attention from the prior calamity, also true of domestic scandals. 2) Unable to stop oil and gas energy exploration on private land as he has stopped it on public lands Obama can take unearned credit for gas and oil renaissance that turns out a boon for American global leverage despite his efforts to thwart it. If Obama is lucky he will be able to avoid minor confrontations while ensuring catastrophic confrontations for his successors.

Although immigration is praised by those who benefit from it directly. The vast majority of Americans know when federal law is ignored then chaos follows. The burden of granting federal exemption to millions of foreign nationals who never followed U.S. law for entry falls to the middle class taxpayer and entry level workers.

The planet did not heat up, the ice caps did not melt away, global warming morphed to climate change, this after insisting weather is not climate, so now that climate change caused everything, it caused nothing. So what was it? A late 20th century critique of global-market capitalism by elites who have done so well by it, a secular religion filling a deep psychological yearning for a secular religion held by western big shots with no effect on the lifestyles of its priests.

Ferguson is the result of identity politics, salad bowl instead of melting pot, trillions of dollars spent over last fifty years into Great Society dependencies. We are left with the movement's slogans, "Hands up, don't shoot" now added to "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit," and "If I had a son, he'd look like Travon."  Ferguson shows the problems of present day liberalism: the anti-empirical insistence that facts of the shooting do not matter, critical legal theory ignoring time-honored role of disinterested grand jury, tolerance of illegality as acceptable protest against a system, and media's hyping while understanding the violence is remote from their own neighborhoods, schools and businesses.

Hanson avers the truth is Obama has always trafficked in racial divisiveness. From his candid memoir admissions, dutiful discipleship of racist Reverand Wright, to "typical white person," the clingers speech, "punish your enemies, Skip Gates, Travon Martin, and Michael Brown cases. Hanson describes his contortions as brilliant, the current canard that losing 6% of the black vote is proof of diversity while wining 40% of the white vote is sign of new racism.
Obamacare was, in the end, little more than a clumsy effort to take over the health-care system by redistributing resources from the supposedly too-well-off to the more noble less-well-off, with billions of dollars siphoned off to expand government bureaucracies and enrich crony capitalists
The point of the program was not to provide coverage to millions of uninsured Americans — that could have been done far more cheaply through existing programs — but to create a vast new federal bureaucracy to redistribute health-care resources.
My own healthcare is socialized and I have benefitted from it tremendously. It saved my life repeatedly. I am not exaggerating. I still value it. But that is socialized at the district level, not the federal level. And it is not even all citizens within a district, rather, all people working for an organization within the district. Important because closer, it is far more responsive. Example: our prescription drug provider was sold to a new outfit. They treated us as if we all landed from Mars, and they were all just born yesterday. Cost savings by the new company reduced customer service dramatically. I called and I wrote our head office. My voice was added to other voices and within the next year the provider was changed. That will not be possible under a federal system.

Hansen believes most importantly Obama has failed to deliver on his most extravagant promises to end crony capitalism, the revolving door, lobbyists in government, and corruption. Instead, Obama will be remembered as presiding over the most corrupt administration in the last half century.

How conservative.

Historians will aggregate the scandals of IRS, VA, GSA, Secret Service, erosion of constitutional fidelity, serial falsehoods about Benghazi, amnesty, and Obamacare, harassment of journalists, Wall Street shakedown in 2008 and 2012, flood of lobbyists in and out of Obama's administration. And then there is Eric Holder spouting inflammatory racist rhetoric, politicizing Justice Department, selectively enforcing the law and being held in contempt of Congress for withholding subpoenaed documents.

The damage, as summarized by military historian, classics professor, scholar of ancient warfare, Victor Davis Hanson, is that six years after the summer of hope and change nobody in the Democratic party is bragging about American foreign policy, nor pushing for cap-and-trade, nor praising Obamacare, nor the way amnesty is handled, nor pointing to a cleaner more transparent bureaucracy. What started out hopefully ends with a president who habitually misleads, leaves an array of scandals and a discredited media, and policies that do not work, and by all historic models never could have worked.

Proof: Observe Democrats regroup for 2016. They will ignore or deny most of what Obama has done.

This is summary. Victor Hanson says all this and more so much more eloquently on National Review Online.

Awesome analysis of a pathetic situation.

Why does being right about so much for so long feel so bad? I'm so disappointed in my fellow voters and our institutions that we could be so thoroughly trashed by such a weak and groundless pile of bullshit as the Obama phenomena.

As you most likely know, the word "canard" means "duck" in French.

Whenever I read the word "canard" I see this.

Tonight the History Channel ran an excellent show about a company that constructs things like movie props. They made a display for Museum in Florida about king Tut's burial chamber. It all started by the museum owing a mummy called "Lady of the Nile." The mummy was found under water and smelled of poo.

The show was about the company constructing a throne as the ancients did, the hard way without any nails nor any joints showing, nor modern elements like nails, but when it came to the three nested gold coffins they fudged and used styrofoam.

They did not realize the middle coffin was made for somebody else. And they did not include the five outer wooden sarcophagus shrines that filled the whole room to within an inch. And the company artists, good as they are, because they had no real interest in Egyptology, had no idea that despite ancient egyptians artistic idealism, Tut actually looked closer to this.

You want to strangle the little fucker just looking at him. I can see his military commander and high official Horemheb murdering him, allowing for the creaky old Ay and very soon after himself.

I was cheered when they opened the display to the museum's special first glimpse guests (who dress like slobs) and it blew everybody away. The company artist were so well chuffed with the guest's reaction and with their own work. The artists all said that this is their all-time favorite project, and I believe them. They did an outstanding job of it.

The whole time I was reading Victor Davis Hansen, his description was reminding me of Tut's dad, Akhenaten who goofed on the whole nation of Egypt the way Obama is goofing on ours. His name was scratched off everything that was scratchable. Noses broken off statues as acts of defiance. Very little was left undamaged.

The Left has been in decline since LBJ, it's just now we've hit the Peter Principle.

We are left with the movement's slogans, "Hands up, don't shoot" now added to "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit," and "If I had a son, he'd look like Travon."

He forgot, "Ah did not have sex with thet woman, Mizz Lewinsky", and, "Ah will not send 'Murrican boyz to faht in Veet Nam".

Great summary.

Heck, that's become a daily event.

Obama would've sunk more three-pointers if it weren't for the Republicans shouting in the stands.

Playing the long game, viewed from his own goals, Zero has been a great success:

1. Disengaged America from the world. He does not care.

2. Destroyed the old medical system to the extent that there is nothing to go back to, and the "logical" next step will be single payer, what he really wanted.

3. Swung open the borders to allow millions more illegals in, then used his "orders" to de facto legalize them. This is just seed for future leftist victories (see England - most common name for boys = Mohammed).

4. Worked to separate black (his people) from white. War on White.

5. Appointed as many leftist Judges, appointees and employees as possible. Gov't is full of people who love gov't.

He's been pretty successful - for him and his people.

Great post, Chip, and very accurate comment, Tank. He is a success in that sense and he's most likely not finished.

"The natural outcome of the reactionary approach to race relations — identity politics, the salad bowl in lieu of the melting pot, the effusions of trillions of dollars over the last half-century into Great Society dependencies — is Ferguson. We are left with the movement’s slogan, “Hands up; don’t shoot!” which now joins a growing historical corpus of racial mythography — “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit,” and “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon.”"

That.

This:

"Ferguson illustrated many of the problems of postmodern liberalism: the anti-empirical insistence that the facts of the shooting of Michael Brown did not matter much; critical legal theory, which ignored the time-honored role of a disinterested grand jury; the tolerance of illegality as some sort of acceptable protest against the system; and the liberal media’s hyping a crisis on the understanding that the ramifications of the violence were safely distant from their own schools, neighborhoods, and restaurants."

His big failure is that people have now gotten a big lesson on how ineffective and untrustworthy government is at nearly everything it does supposedly for us. At least you saw that if you watched Fox or did any exploration outside of the MSM. Still many people do not venture outside it, and remain incredibly uninformed. They will make the same mistakes again and again. Most liberals I know realize there was a huge screw up in electing Obama, but still have not learned to distrust obvious bullshit when they hear it. They still soak up new lies as if they never saw one before. I watch this around me every day, and it's impenetrable.

Obama doesn't have anything left. All the arrows are out of his quiver, so now all he can do is act to circumvent the constitution. It will be ugly.

He appeased the supporters of gay marriage.

He is appeasing the proggs who hate the military and want it reigned in.

He has appeased the proponents of illegal immigration.

He has appeased the proponents of government healthcare.

He is now appeasing the proponents of racial division and hatred.

There are no more groups left to appease. He is out of ideas and opportunities.

And while playing to the various constituencies of the left, he has skillfully aided in the growth of Wall Street and the large corporations whose leaders have faithfully donated to Obama's campaigns. The proggs hate banks; Obama loves him some bankers.

All he has left is to extend the racial divide as long as he possibly can. More riots, more anarchy. Count on it.

I used to think that the "revolution" would be the people taking back the overly oppressive Federal Government and reverting to the States rights and local control that was envisioned by the framers.

Now. I'm pretty sure it is the coming race war that will be the catalyst. I would have preferred the first scenario, but I'm sure that the second is coming sooner than later. The first would have been a return to sanity. The second is a descent into chaos, violence and a long long protracted war that divides us all even further.

People are fed up with muticulturalism, being labeled racists for wanting the laws to be enforced and sick and tired of the black entitlement attitude.

I'm glad I'm old and will likely just see the beginnings of it. I fear for my grandchildren.

Liberalism appeals to stupids. So when you elect a liberal administration you're electing a stupid administration. Not stupid in terms of chicanery; stupid in terms of prudence.

Oh, but there is an alternative posed by several over the past decade, from John Kerry to Daryl Issa. It retains the private sector aspect of health insurance, is portable, does not allow disqualification form prior illnesses, and could have been implement with some adjustments to the program. It suspect it was not considered by liberal progressives because it does not vest the majority of power over citizens in the government...it merely provides options that accomplish the main points they advocate for, but does not vest arbitrary power in the executive branch. And, heaven forbid, it has been in place and functioning very well for over 50 years.

I've cited it before so many times, without response, that I'll not bother again....except to name it as the FEHBP....and point out that the last proposal, ignored of course, was HR 3319....essentially the same proposal John Kerry made in 2004, and was also ignored, but his own folks no less.

I get a lot of political fund raising calls, and no one in 2013 or 2014 knew what HR 3319 was about...not a single one. Therefore I have donated nearly nothing this time around.

Most of that "success" can be undone by one Conservative POTUS - witness what Reagan did to the New Deal.

And the New Deal was popular.

It is so hard to portray Obama as having fucked up America any worse than W. did, but Republicans sure will try. I, personally, won't prefer Obama until he cuts the DJIA and my investment values in half and charges up a few trillion to fight out personal vendettas in the Middle East.

The great thing about these posts is that they encourage Republicans to come up with propaganda as empty and as practiced and as self-serving as Obama's. They get Republicans to wax poetic and remind themselves that their mouths are put to far better uses than remembering or analyzing facts. It's certainly entertaining, if practically useless.

Translation: "When I've got no effective, fact-based rebuttals I sure can churn out enough empty rhetoric to choke a horse. And I do it in the worst 1980s duds possible: Members Only-look alike jackets and an overall outfit that looks like it was purchased from Gap Kids."

Whatever the country's doing, it's not going to the 1980s. Your sad wardrobe, OTOH, is another story.

But the adjectives were good old romping adolescent fun: "Vapid". And academic: "Threadbare". Goes well with your even more pediatric fixes on things "rotten" and "stinking".

Not thinking for oneself must feel like its own rebellion.
