MLB Opening Day Public Service Advisory

Today is the official start of summer - Major League Baseball's opening day.  The first game of the new season.  The day on which the Cubs are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.   The day on which the Red Sox fans get drunk and vomit and scream unintelligible things.  The day on which Yankees fans gloat about the trade for Babe Ruth, because the Yankees haven't made a decent trade since then.  The day on which Rockies fans light up spliffs at the stadium and wonder when the concert will start.

And millions of tailgating fans will cook bratwurst in stadium parking lots.  Most of them will do it the wrong way.  In the interest of public service........

Wear your baseball cap today, but not like this guy.

Here's one of the best and funniest MLB Hall of Fame induction ceremony speeches ever presented.

ADDED:

Sooner or later this had to happen.  Hu's on first.

Hey, I'm a Cub fan!

This is going to be our year...

To be in last place again!

But, we have some great prospects coming up from the minors by the end of the season!

Funny guy Bob Ueker. Member of a world champion team one year. little known fact.

Uek --

"Right down Wisconsin Avenue." -- Calling a pitch right down the middle.

"Get up, get up, get outta here, gone." -- Brewer homerun.

Uek is a treasure. An aging treasure, sadly. He'll only be calling home games this year because he doesn't have the energy for travel any more. He's well into his 80s now.

There needs to be a blog about ballpark food. The Nacho Response.

Your opening is hilarious, Haz. Wish I could be going to a ballgame today.

Bob Uecker is amazing - he has perfect comedic timing.

I am glad he is in the HoF - I hope he is in the front row - that's where he deserves to be.

Born in 1934 on an oleo run - I wouldn't have understood that save for a recent discussion here. Ah, the things one learns along the way...

I probably have a picture of him, from a great distance, at an Indians Rick Vaughn day.

The Soft Rock station in Cleveland always plays John Fogerty's, "Centerfield", and Bud and Lou doing, "Who's on first", on this day.

Thanks for the reminder, Ed :) This is dedicated to all those who understand that baseball is as good as football, and especially to those who think it's better:

lol Haz, brilliant!

Once when I was dropping my kids off at school, Who's on First began to play. I'd never heard the whole thing. As we pulled up to my son's school it was about half-way done, we were all laughing, and I was touched how that comedy bit had crossed the decades unscathed by time.

We're going to the LA v SD game tomorrow. Get to see Greinke pitch. He was the best Brewer's pitcher ever IMO. Too bad so short lived.

Hey buddy boy the Yankees make plenty of great trades. Danny Cater for Sparky Lyle. Roberto Kelly for Paul O'Neill. A bunch of crap for Roger Maris.

And the best trade of all time. Bud Paley for George Steinbrenner the best owner in the history of baseball. A man who is unjustly denied his much deserved spot in the Hall of Fame.

Trooper York said...

Just as Babe Ruth transformed baseball from the dead ball era to the era of the home room, so too did George Steinbrenner bring baseball into a new era. The modern era. The capitalist era. Where you spent money to win. Only the teams that are willing to spend are willing to win. That is the way it is.

All this modern crap about pitch counts is hooey. Not according to me, according to Tom Seaver. Look it up.

Bless you, ma'am, for that look back at the Good Old Days.

And they were.

PS "Sooner or later this had to happen. Hu's on first."

And then Wat's on second.

Can't wait for Ho Lee Fuk to hit a grand slam.

I get to listen to Vin Scully. He is a great announcer. Uek is a funny announcer but horrible play by play. We've discussed this previously. Uek is like Harry Caray, likeable, funny, but WTF is happening on the field??

Ed and Sixty are on a roll :)

I told my son today that if the Indians were at Baltimore today for a night game we'd go up come hell or high water. Alas, they were playing Boston...at 3:05.
