Mayor Marty Walsh tried and failed to negotiate a deal with the conservative Allied War Veteran’s Council to allow members of MassEquality, one of the state of Massachusetts’s largest gay activist groups, to join the parade. Why would an organization want to join people who don't want them?
The Council argued that to do so would conflict with their Roman Catholic heritage.
“So much of our Irish history has been shaped by the fight against oppression,” Walsh, the city's first Irish-American mayor in 20 years, said in a statement.
“As mayor of the city of Boston, I have to do my best to ensure that all Bostonians are free to participate fully in the civic life of our city.
"Unfortunately, this year, the parties were not able to come to an understanding that would have made that possible," he added.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is also boycotting the St. Patrick's day parade in New York over the policy to ban marchers who carry gay-pride banners.

The lack of respect for simple freedom of association is quite difficult to understand.
Also difficult to understand is the notion that we are all supposed to be deputized to fight, denounce and abolish all instances of discrimination that we encounter.
The entire discrimination obsession has been bewildering to me for quite a while. Seems to be useless for anything except fomenting anger and hatred.
Why can't we leave people alone in their ordinary human sinfulness?
It's St Patrick's day. What does that have to do with LGBT?
Help me understand. Of course everyone should be open to celebrate civic activities.
Thing is, aren't there thousands of groups and organizations out there? Are they all a good fit to march w/ the St. Patrick's day parade? Of course not. Help me understand why the LGBT group, above and beyond any other group, must turn a parade that isn't about them into a parade that is about them.
I doubt the Allied War Veteran's Council feels the need to show up at a LGBT parade. What am I missing? Why force your group inside every tradition and turn it into "hey look at me?"
Other "groups and organizations" aren't behaving in that manner.
Help me understand why the LGBT group, above and beyond any other group, must turn a parade that isn't about them into a parade that is about them.
Because Boston is the center of the universe and its LGBT are the innermost axis of that hub.
Alternatively, they just want to be a spoke on that wheel.
In any case, a squeaky wheel gets lubed.
I hope there are no drunken fights.
April:
"It's St Patrick's day. What does that have to do with LGBT?"
Leprechauns are gay.
"lubed"
Oh, behaaave!
Being gay or being straight has nothing to do with a Saint Patrick's Day parade. Nothing.
LGBT people are welcome to march, the same as any other people. The big difference, however, is the LGBT people want to turn it into a parade about themselves, and not about St. Patrick or Irish ancestry.
LGBT people are included in every part of American society, and enjoy privileges and media treatment not available to others.
This whole "look at us, we're special snowflakes" insistence is little more than simple petulance on the part of some who simply cannot live without being paid fawning attention by everyone else.
And if they used the hotline to Pope Francis, he'd say "OF COURSE the LGBTs may march!"
From now on, to march in the St Pat's Day parade, you have to have a DNA test to prove that you're Irish. Everyone else has to stay in the bars and drink.
Allen ftw :) Wait, that means I can't stay in the bar and drink.
Of course they can march Deborah. Just not carrying signs that rub it in everybody's noses. That goes for bigamists, polygamists, abortionists and Protestants. They all have their own parades.
There have always been gay people marching in New York's Paddy's Day parade. Mayor Koch marched every year.
The Gaystapo has to have everything be about THEM.
But, of course, the Lefties love it because it's another way to attack religion.
After all, there is but one true god - the State.
This the 253 St Patrick's Day parade in NYC. Somehow they have managed to march without floats with people wearing ass less chaps and butt plugs. Why can't we keep to our own traditions and other people can keep to theirs. The Irish don't force their way into the Caribbean Day Parade or the Columbus Day parade.
A wise Latina once said "Stick to your own kind."
The parade is being televised on WNBC today. It used to be on WPIX every year with the Merry Mailman and Officer Joe Bolton as commenters.
They just swore in a bunch of recruits to the "Fighting 69th" National Guard unit on Fifth Avenue. God bless them and keep them out of harms way.
Reading the whole article I find that the "Diversity Float" is in fact allowed with their rainbow flags and all...since that flag can represent LBGT issues or end of the rainbow gold in Irish lore.
The LGBT float per se was not allowed because it insisted on making it all about an LGBT "message" and Irish not at all.
In short, the Boston mayor is a dick, just like the New York mayor, and both lie about who is left out and why.
I do understand it however, like most politicians of their ilk, they are best on their knees licking things and not for any reason of gayness...which is an entirely different matter.
Oh I understand what the LGBT crowd is trying to accomplish, alright (as many here have already alluded to) and I understand the motivations of the politicians as well, (all too well) but what I don't understand is the thinking behind of the pullout of the corporate sponsors. If it is true that business is all about the bucks why would these corporate sponsors risk alienating tens of millions of Catholics vs an LGBT crowd that is only 1,7% of the population? It makes no economic/financial sense. Anyone?
The are afraid of the vindictive attacks of the gay cultists. Witness the Mormons in California. Witness the bakers and florists who are up on charges.
Most corporations are cowards. They will take the easy way out.
It makes no economic/financial sense. Anyone?
Disproportionate representation at the TOP.
Follow the money.
If a corporation attempts to operate under religious principles like the Hobby Lobby company they will have to spend millions of dollars to be free to operate within their own principles.
This used to be America.
Titus is checkin' his stool at this very minute to determine if it shows signs of oppression.
I'm sure his bar stool shows signs of impression.
huh, go figure, old micks don't like the deviant micks wanting to make the parade about them.

That's only if he pinched.
But chick is right-Boston is the center of the universe and the high monied fags pretty much run every facet of the economy.
