St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Paddy's one and all, unless you're an Orangeman.

I'm half Irish - me mother was a McGrath - and my first memories of celebrating St. Paddy's was my granddad taking me to his favorite bar when I was  a wee lad of three years.  We kept the tradition until he died at age 93.  And we practiced for St. Paddy's Day every time we saw each other.  A man needs to keep ready, you know.

The part of me that's Irish hates it when drunken fookers invade my favorite pub and act like idjits, drinking green Miller beer and puking on everything.

And now some music from fine Irish lads.

God love ya, dear friends.  'Tis a day to be filled with joy.

According to my DNA test, I'm 9% Irish.

Paddy's Day is always a tough day for a drinking man. It is amateur hour.

Dennis Leary for all the fact that he is a total asshole summed up Paddy's Day perfectly:

"St Paddy's Day is when you get in a fight because a 250 pound plumbers apprentice from Long Island punches you in the face because you moved his Jets jacket off of your normal barstool in your local.

That's it to a T.

I'm a whole lotta Irish plus a fair amount mixed breed ner'do well.

Trooper is right ... St Paddy's Day is amateur hour, just as New Year's Eve is too.

Only back when I was dating a girl with a just-off-the-boat Irish family did I ever enjoy it. We'd all go to a large public country club the Gaelic League had rented for dinner, entertainment, music and the dancers both local and professional. Those days are long gone now.

The Chieftains often get to my neck of the woods around this time. I highly regimen their shows.

All right blood brother Hazman! My grandmother on my Father's side was a McGrath! (Otherwise I'm 50% WASP and 25% Dutch/German/Jewish? [Glick] )

SO...lets take a poll: John Jamesons or Old Bushmills?

My favorite Irish group Dervish with Cathy Jordan will be in Berea, Ohio in July. They make a tour of spots in the USA every year...each year different.

If you read my profile I mention An-T-Ull as recorded long ago. Translation is provided on the Youtube site.

Given today is purportedly Irish...here's an artist everyone may not like, but Sinéad O'Connor has done a fine job with Óró 's é do bheatha 'bhaile ... also with translation on the Youtube site.

I'd have preferred Bodrans instead of the rocker style drums, but it is a feminist paeon without the snotty grift. So there's that. :)

A choice where the difference is no difference. Ole Jameson was a Scotsman and Bushmills is in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

What the hell, maybe some 16 year old Knappogue Castle Single Malt headquartered in NYC.

The best day to party in an Irish pub if you are a regular is the day after Paddy's Day. They have made so much money the day before and got so many tips that you end up drinking for free.

Virgil - are we long lost kin?

Trooper ....Amen. And I have three such pubs to choose from in my little town.

Sorry to say the most authentic (means scruffy guys in trench coats soliciting for money to support the fight against "The Troubles" etc.) named "Tipperary Pub" has been closed for a few years now...great music, all from the Old Sod. Not a place to act stupid...but a place where everyone knew your name.

Another authentic favorite of mine I can't recall the name of (been too long)...it is in Washington DC behind the Pulaski Building, right at the base of "the Hill." If anyone here knows the name please let me know...I am planning a DC trip this summer. Nostalgia calls.

Great song, McHaz, thanks for posting it. Van is one of us.

Michael, we iz awl long lost kin.

Bwahahahaha.

Bushmills, ftw. But only if the Scottish single malt is gone. Avoid that rotgut Jamesons.

Sixty Grit is right, in that song especially Van Morrison is one of us all...my favorite of his is "Gloria" however.

Now speaking of girls and Irish minds, here's a favorite of mine Red Haired Mary, Oh!

And of course, Eilieen Og bythe Dubliners...and by Cathy Jordan & Eleanor Shanley, etc...

Seems like the Irish are always signing about girls :-)

It ain't Saint Paddy's widout Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brudders!

Jameson's tastes like whiskey a drunken Irishman has pissed into.

That Dervish version of Red Haired Mary is perfectly awful. Squeaky voiced wench singing' a man's song. 14 violins and lots of big tits and o eat it's great. Women ruin every bloody thing.

Amen Ricpic, amen.

The Irish fled Ireland during the potato famine because they were too dumb to walk to the ocean and fish.

My earliest American ancestor came from Ireland in 1788. However, according to my DNA, I am mostly German. I recently learned about the Palatine Irish. They were German refugees from the religious wars, resettled in Ireland in the 1600s—a possible explanation for my German DNA.

Aridog said...

Valentine...just for you.

And I'd agree it is the best version. But it is not the version that matters, it is the story.

However if you think Cathy Jordan is a wench you're hardly Irish....or even close in spirit.

And all this time I thought it was me misogynistic streak what showed me Irish spirit. I guess 4 generations in squeezes the Irish right outta ya. That and growin' up with so many Eyetalians.

LOL. How did that line go in the Sopranos? "Hell is being stuck forever in an Irish Pub named the Emerald Piper where every day is St Pats Day"

Mostly Welsh, Great Grandparents on Dad's side both immigrated from Wales. Irish. Great Grands on my mothers side both from County Mayo and a little Basque thrown in on my Father's side in the Welsh gene pool

I can drink like the Irish and sing like the Welsh. Today, though, we are too old and tired to do either and plan to just eat corned beef.

Here is how I cook it. Hubby won't have it any other way.

Always a big turnout in New Richmond, WI for St Pat's Day. No traffic allowed in town for a while.

Bagpipes also!

AllenS said...

Man, don't get much better than that.

Aridog said...

Allen ... interesting song for St Pat's by those pipers ... ah, all's well, Celts will be Celts.

Aridog said...

St Patrick's Day cannot pass by without at least one Bodran piece.

Not quite John Joe Kelly, but thrilling none-the-less if you are fan of the drums.

And finally, one Slip Jig...updated and modern by Jean Butler the master herself.

A knowledgeable barmaid claims that Marathon Day attracts a bigger crowd than St Patricks Day at the pub where she works . The pub is just north of 86St in Manhattan. I don't know if that's a hopeful sign or the beginning of End Days......Sinead O'Connor is great despite herself. I would take Shane MacGowan over Ruth Ginsburg in the death pool, but he keeps on going.

I like Bushmills. I like Bing Crosby too. I'm practically Irish.
