ObamaCare Mandate: Working Poor Hardest Hit

"About 30 percent of small franchises and 12 percent of other small businesses say they are cutting work hours – or swapping full-time for part-time workers – because of the law, according to a poll sponsored by business groups."

"Although the provision won’t be enforced until 2015, some employers with 40 to 500 workers have already started adjusting for the new landscape, the survey by Public Opinion Strategies found:"
  • Some 31 percent of franchise businesses and 12 percent of non-franchise businesses say they have already reduced worker hours because of the law.
  • About 27 percent of franchise businesses and 12 percent of non-franchise businesses have already replaced full-time workers with part-time employees because of the law.
  • Some 41 percent of the non-franchise firms say they already see health-care costs rising because of the law.
  • As the franchise firms look toward the future, 28 percent of them say they’ll stop offering health coverage in 2015 because of the law. One-third of franchise businesses already do not offer health insurance.

There is no way I can cut hours, we run 16 hours a day now, and with our annual growth at over 20% I can't cut employees either, although I have stopped increasing our count, and am only replacing attrition.

I am pretty sure I will be forced by economics to either drop our company subsided insurance, or end companywide bonuses and raises for the foreseeable future. We will try to raise prices, but that will just cause us to lose business to Chinese competitors, and that business and the jobs associated with it will never return.

No matter how you cut it, it's bad for my employees, and I assume we represent a lot of American companies and workers. The most economically foolhardy administration in my lifetime. Just plain stupid.

I have talked to many of the small businesses on Court St and they are all going to part time workers to avoid the problem. It really sucks for the workers who have to get two or three jobs to get the same pay.

This is just a fiasco.

Hire part timers to replace the attrits. How expensive is the learning curve?

Trooper York said...

Part time employees can be more trouble than they are worth. They are always ready to run out the door to their other gig. You have to spend the same amount of time training them but are getting a lot less work out of them. Plus they can't support their family on the money they can get working part time.

I understand that Obama doesn't care because he is a part time President.

But he is playing golf not working a second job at Burger King.

Count on the Republicans, instead of letting this be a huge wake up call to the electorate, count on them saving the Dems from this solely Dem created Frankenstein monster by "fixing" it.

I can't use part timers and we don't have a single one. People don't have the skills anymore that we use in our business, so we have to train everyone, and training the unskilled is part of our mission and business strategy. It's not worth it for part time returns, and there is no loyalty, which is really highly valued here, and a big part of our success.

My people want and deserve more money, not additional insurance coverage for people who refuse to work or buy insurance, or extra money for insurance companies, or a broad new bureaucracy to manage and clog up what was already the best system in the world without it.

This is simply another in a long line of punishments for those who do the right thing so that those who won't can steal even more of their mojo.

All according to plan....

And today the President promised that he wouldn't enforce another part of the law. Honest!

Of course, there is no more reason to believe him on this than there was when he said, "If you like your plan, you can keep it. Period."

Lem Vibe Bandit said...

And here I thought a president couldn't pick and choose which laws to enforce... the distinction between what Obama is saying now, about ObamaCare, and ordinary law breaking can't be that far off.

Why do we have a congress for?

Obama is ruling by decree.

I'm sure Obama is wondering the same thing.

But Lem, Obamacare will provide you with excellent coverage better than you could imagine, and because your income is limited, Bagoh will pay your subsidy!!

Of course, Lem, you can't get on the site to be one of the many people in Jersey signing up!

Sorry ladies, but this is a big problem:

Fox Poll: "Men think Obama blames others (58 percent), while women say he takes responsibility (51 percent)."

I'm even embarrassed for my sex's number.

So now Obama is saying we can keep some of these insurance plans?

But weren't these all Bad Plans and we were all supposed to transition to better ones?

Maybe I'm missing something.

Or maybe we should just discuss Michelle's toned arms, or her garden, or fat kids, or, uh....

Serious questions:

Has there ever been a worse:

1) domestic policy blunder than Obamacare?

2) case of raw partisan overreach and abandonment of the constitution to pass and massage Obamacare, control the tea Party through the IRS, and avoid finding the truth of Benghazi?

3) Presidential lie than those used to sell Obamacare, and cover up Benghazi?

4) administration deserving impeachment?

5) President

6) performance by the American people than the election and continued support of this administration.

I'm embarrassed.

Plus they can't support their family on the money they can get working part time.

I know several hourly employees who counted on the ability to work over time, particularly this time of year. And it typically happened, because there were pushes to get certain things completed before the end of the year. But with Obamacare, the businesses could probably afford the overtime yet cannot afford to let their employees work anywhere near the 40 hours to get there. So the two part time jobs might get an employee 50 hours of total work, but not that extra bonus for the 10 hours.

A few places have been touting that the Obamacare damage will get worse before it gets better. The article I read really wasn't close to just how bad it really is going to be. And we're only talking about the business and employee side in this thread. These people losing their insurance and unable to enroll will still need healthcare next year. There will be riots in hospitals.

chickelit said...

There will be riots in hospitals.

Not only will there not be riots in hospitals, there will be fewer people dying in hospitals under ObamaCare -- at least those dying of old age. End-of-life palliative care will involve fewer life-extending heroics and and more in-home hospice caregiving.

A growth industry will be private cadaver transport from homes to mortuary.

Here’s a number that isn’t tiny: Five million people — and counting — have lost their health insurance, despite the president’s years of “you can keep your plan” promises. The president has apologized, sort of. He says he’s “sorry” that people have found themselves in a bad situation because of “assurances” he made. But no one has lost their insurance because of the president’s assurances, they’ve lost their insurance because of the president’s law. If a captain has the lifejackets filled with cement, his assurance that “you can keep your lifejacket” is only half the crime.

Exactly as he and his sponsors planned it. Emasculated Congress (no budgets, ever) and emasculated Supreme Court (quaking in fear of being ignored)..and there you have it, as several of us have said years back...AUTOCRACY!

The majority has fucked all of us and seems to enjoy going down in flames with us as well. Odd that.

The owners of two large, well-established restaurants where I live have decided to share employees. Most of the employees work part-time at both places, in different uniforms.

Scheduling is a pain in the neck but both places get to keep good staff. And the employees get full time hours by working both jobs.

bagoh20 said...

That's a great idea, but also a ridiculous a measure to have to take to avoid being fucked by your government, which badly needs your tax dollars and success. It's almost like they don't know where the money comes from, or what their job is. Focused like a laser beam on that economy for 5 years and counting.
