I heard that Obama only lets Navy ships make left turns.

Ships don't turn left. They turn to port. Or starboard.

Of if you're a hipster, ships turn port and Chablis.

I had no idea that a destroyer, albeit a smaller one, could execute a 180 degree turn that rapidly, and over such a short distance.

That seemed really fast to me too.

Looks like it killed all their velocity, though. Great for avoiding a torpedo, but puts them kind of dead in the water until they can build up steam again.

The fuel bills for large fast ships like these must be astronomical.

I had no reason to think it made that squealing tires sound from the 1970s TV detective shows so I didn't click.

A 9000 ton "Destroyer"! In WW II a small turning circle was crucial in ASW.

Maybe it still is, hence the small turning radius.

Whole damn country took a hard left.

That boat turns left fast!

Note how the stern keeps plowing forward. The Titanic executed an evasive left turn which amount to a hard left to clear the bow followed by a hard right to clear the stern from iceberg. The maneuver is called "porting around." Of course she didn't quite make it and her bow scraped, but First Officer Murdoch prevented broadsiding the stern against the iceberg.

The Titanic came dead upon the berg and the Officers could have swerved her left or right but they knew that the ship could turn harder to port because of the direction her screw propellors turned.

I think you'd be surprised at how fuel efficient large ships are compared to jets. This is why heavy freight is still moved by ships.

That plus trains don't float.

They should name all destroyers after Obama.

"I have become Dearth, destroyer of Wealth."

Discussing the Harry Reid move... I heard George Will earlier tonight say that a 2015 republican president, with a republican senate, could, with 51 votes repeal ObamaCare.

It looks to me like they are going for broke.

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

Having gambled big and lost big... at this point, what difference does it make?

These people cannot be trusted with power.

Michael Haz said...

Yep. If they have concluded that they will lose the Senate in 2014, look for a lot of crazy stuff, like packing the federal courts with proggs, etc.

They are planting land mines.

Of course, with this precedent and 51 votes in the Senate, the Republicans could pass a bill severely restricting abortion.

Smart move, Harry,

It's only a question of what can they do with a year.

W/o the filibuster in the senate, Obama has effectively weakened Ted Cruz.

It's going to be up to Boehner.

You can really work on your golf swing on the deck of the right ship.

Unless, of course, you're worried about getting a ball stuck in a whale's blow-hole and you don't have a marine biologist on board.

Obama and Reid can drop dead at this point and I would throw a fucking party. Dumb motherfuckers are killing this country.

That boat turns left fast!

Just don't say that to a navy man.

"Unless, of course, you're worried about getting a ball stuck in a whale's blow-hole..."

So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you, boys, I was terrified! But I pressed on - and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment - I was a Marine Biologist!

...The sea was angry that day, my friends, like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli! I got about fifty feet out and suddenly, the great beast appeared before me. I tell ya, he was ten stories high if he was a foot. As if sensing my presence, he let out a great bellow. I said, "Easy big fella!"

And then, as I watched him struggling, I realized that something was obstructing its breathing. From where I was standing I could see directly into the eye of the great fish!

How about "That boat turns left in a jiffy"?

Lem the artificially intelligent said...

I believe they like to call them "ships" and it's "port" and "starboard", not left and right.

See MH's second comment.
