A Portrait Of The Vortex

Ball Point Pen and Coloured Pencil on 8 1/2" x 11" white copier paper

This was a bad dream more than a year ago. My sketch represents the Althouse Vortex. Each of the suckers on the tentacles is a different political or cultural entity which may attract or repel commenters. For example, there is an entire phalanx of Democrats represented by blue and a red army of Republicans; the libertarian partisans are green. Individual suckers represent other tribes: L, G, B, and T are self-evident. The male symbol, ♂ and the female symbol ♀ are there. There's a Star of David, a crescent, and a fish symbol for Christians (why I didn't use a cross escapes me). There's also a peace sign, a Mercedes-Benz symbol, and even an Audi TT symbol -- even corporate interests are represented.

My original analogy of the Vortex was to the active site of an enzyme which has attractive and repulsive chemical groups to orient and align chemical substrates for transformation or digestion. A commenter caught in the vortex may be both attracted and repelled by various tentacle suckers; less often than not, their opinions may be transformed or digested by interaction with the tentacle suckers.

When I first published this sketch, commenter noticed that the Vortex had only seven appendages and wondered if it was symbolic of Seven Machos; the resemblance was not intentional. The blue painter's tape was an homage to Meade, and the key to that is back here from a time when Meade's identity was known only to Althouse. At the time I suspected that Meade was actively stirring the Vortex behind the scenes.

Anywise, now that the beast has been slain, perhaps it's time for an autopsy.

Freeman, he posted at Althouse right around the debacle, and said he owed his writing skills to her blog. Here's his profile from 9/2012:

Lol. Haz.

Mr Machos apparently took his Hill of the Foreskins blog offline, but Blogger informs me that it's available to register!

I guess that wouldn't be the point, though.

But honestly, why all the fuss? Is he really some kind of holy grail?

I think what the eight of you have done serves that purpose.

If he de-registered his blog then chances are he decided to give up the jig.

Just being realistic/playing devil's advocate. But realize that a number of people are going to want to do the Blogger/commenting thing with as much anonymity/low traceability as possible, and I wouldn't be surprised if he was one of them.

And has a couple of young kids.

Maybe there was a recent life event... A divorce...?

No, he said he started writing professionally. Thus the interest in reading what he's been writing.

If that's the case then he's probably either using his real name or making his way toward transitioning from a pen name to a real name. But I think as a first step his abandonment of Blogger means that he'll have decided to leave that account (and identity?) behind.

What he did there and on other Blogger pages is probably not something he'd want to associate with himself professionally, regardless of what he says he'd learned from it.

Right, but by asking that, he may see it and send me a link to his new venue.

I guess I could also suggesting looking up people with the initials "S.M." but he always said he just got the name from a cologne bottle he found in a bodega, as the legend has it...

Well anyway, good luck.

Must have been some really bad, controversial art...

bagoh20,

If I was a suspicious type, I'd suspect Meade and Lem are in cahoots on this project. Meade is doing a bang up job of giving this blog a sense of loyalty, and cohesion, while making sure we don't go back to TOP.

As I said from the beginning, it's a win - win for TOP and here.

It does make you wonder,...

Palladian,

I'm really embarrassed to have not yet fulfilled my order, and it's humiliating that you chose to run that in on a public forum.

I'm sorry, I'm just reeling from this.

Dude, look at this post of mine. It happens.

I've gone from clawing my way to financial security - and even a modicum of fame - to wondering how I'll survive. And I ain't stupid (HEAR THAT, TITUS?) there's just more going on than any of us suspect if we're not informed of it all. You know my story. Tell me I'm lying.

Cheer up, Bud:

I don't trade on being black unless history forces me to. Let go of the gay shit. Leave feminist Ann to her particular madness. And Meade? Come on. He ain't no man.

We make shit, you and I. And that's harder than most realize (an album can take YEARS to get right) so fuck those two 9 to 5 pussies. Ann isn't an artist because SHE CAN'T BE AN ARTIST. Doodling shows talent but doesn't cut it, and all she does (like her thought process) is doodle. We all love your work.

Fuck those two,...

Oh my gosh, Palladian. Do NOT let this drive you away. That is the goal.

And please let your friends here help.

I almost cannot believe what I've just read, and yet it's there. It happened.

Someone here summed it up perfectly: only one man was diminished tonight. Not Palladian.

I just read the most beautiful thread at Troop's. You are loved over there, Palladian. Just thought you'd want to know that.

"I saw that website some time ago! Surreal."

What was Seven's blog like?

deborah said...

I won't search for it now, but I bought a beautiful print of a statue of a male torso from Palladian a few years ago, quickly delivered. I'll hunt up the link later.

Palladian, you are cooler than the other side of the pillow. I love when you give us art lessons. Don't leave us.

Deborah,

The surreal website is the one Michael Haz links at the top of the thread.

Which is unrelated in any way to those to which we must not allude.

(hate that last construction, but I'll just assume you can understand it)

I read Meade's 8:57 comment (which I see he has deleted) in the wee hours, and have resisted the urge to comment out of respect for Lem and the other contributors to this blog. But Meade is right; what he did was so awful I can't not talk about it.

He had the nerve to come into a friend's blog and preach to people about grace, and then pulls the disgraceful stunt of attempting to humiliate a man; someone whom he and his wife spoke fondly enough of in the past that it lead the observer to believe they were friends. He deliberately chose to kick a man, a friend, who is down on his luck, just to score some points in a peurile troll battle. That's as low as anything the worst trolls did on his wife's blog. With that one act, he and his wife have lost any moral high ground they may have once had in this dustup.

I am done with his wife's place. I was still visiting, even though I found I missed the lively discussions. But after this act they repel me.

Just for a moment they should leave the cloud of smug they surround themselves with, so they have enough clarity to effectively ponder the following: If so many people who once were well-wishers* have suddenly become enemies to our eyes, maybe the problem is with us.

*(It was clear to this outside observer, even if the divine Miss A and her minion were unaware, that most of the people who post here were once very fond of Meade and Althouse.)

Can't believe what a douchebag Meade has become. I will enjoy watching Althouse fade into obscurity.

hey, Fen - have you figured out that sitemeter graph yet? Been reading Instapundit?
