Conservatism in Ruins...a commentary by Vox Day

Conservatives

Vox Popoli by Vox Day July 26, 2016
Andrew Klavan's first thoughts on rebuilding conservatism:
The conservative movement has collapsed and is in ruins. Its vehicle for political expression, the Republican Party, is now in the hands of an authoritarian nationalist who has never read the Constitution and does not believe in free expression, free trade or the separation of powers. Its central vehicle for expression in the news media is in disarray as Fox News becomes embroiled in scandal. Even its defenders on talk radio and in the blogosphere are severely at odds as they are forced to choose whether to defend Trump as the lesser of two evils or to stand fast with the founding fathers against both terrible sides.
The conservative movement has collapsed and lies in ruins. And it has done so due to the deceit and dishonesty of conservative commentators like Andrew Klavan, who apparently feel the need to make provably false statements about everyone from Donald Trump to the Founding Fathers.

old sweet potato

Some things you just don't get to in time. I dropped the old sweet potato into the kitchen bin and it looked ikebana sticking up.

This outside container held baby marigolds but a single green caterpillar nibbled all of them down to nubs. Finally one morning the caterpillar stuck out among the nibbled down nubs.  Now the container has supplemental replacement caladiums only beginning to poke through the dirt. I expect the sweet potato will root and fill out with leaves. It's an experiment.

"Ethicists say voting with your heart, without a care about the consequences, is actually immoral"

QUARTZ:   “The purpose of voting is not to express your fidelity to a worldview. It’s not to wave a flag or paint your face in team colors; it’s to produce outcomes,” says Jason Brennan, a philosopher at Georgetown University and author of The Ethics of Voting. “If they’re smart, they’ll vote for the candidate likely to best produce the outcome they want. That might very well be compromising, but if voting for a far-left or far-right candidate means that you’re just going to lose the election, then you’ve brought the world further away from justice rather than closer to it.”

Ilya Somin, a law professor at George Mason University, says it’s important for voters to balance their principles with the consequences of their actions. He suggests creating an equation to multiply how much one favors a candidate by that candidate’s chances of having a positive impact. (read the whole thing)

Correction... Wallace was one of yours.

Rep. Ellison tried to link George Wallace to the GOP, but Republican Rep. Tom Cole immediately called him out with the historical truth.

Israeli puts pork on dead terrorist's body

To deny the terrorist his virgins in heaven. In the new cell phone video medics are trying to resuscitate the terrorist while a resident gets close enough to place a piece of meat on the body telling the terrorist sarcastically to enjoy it.

The practice is not new. The Front Page article cites several previous such incidents and displays this clip of of a film showing the practice and the effect it had on morale.

Neither Front Page nor YouTube uploader name the movie. Reliably, a commenter on YouTube does, stating simply, "The Real Glory 1939."

A subsequent commenter remarks, "Nonsense. Pershing never did any such thing."

Teen caught fondling commuters tells cops he’d never seen white women

A Jamaican student who was caught in the act fondling a woman in a downtown Brooklyn subway station Monday morning — and allegedly did the same to four other women last week — told cops he committed the act because he’d never seen white women before and “they’re absolutely beautiful,” police sources said.
Lt. John DiMeola and Officer Lauren Garcia spotted Damario Johnson, 19, a Jamaican national who is in New York on a student visa, pacing around the Hoyt Street 2 and 3 station before running up to a woman and sticking his hands up her skirt, according to Capt. Zahid Williams, the commanding officer of Transit District 30.
They immediately arrested him without incident. He was charged with sex abuse, Williams said.
Johnson began his lewd spree in the station during the morning rush on Wednesday, Williams said. The second incident was on Thursday evening and two more were on Friday morning, he said.
All of Johnson’s victims were white women ranging from their 20s to their 40s — and in some of the cases, he managed to stick his hand under their underwear, Williams said.

( I used to take the subway from this station every day. It is full of students from Brooklyn Tech.)

"Neo-Nazi gets makeover to hide tattoos from jury"

Las Vegas Review Journal:  “The goal is to make sure we can get a jury to at least give him a fair trial,” defense attorney Dan Bunin said.

A month ago, a different group of possible jurors was summoned to decide on the robbery case against Morgan. But one by one, they saw his tattoos and his bald head and said they could not be fair and impartial.

“If it’s a certain kind of tattoo, in a certain spot, it signifies something more,”...

In the judge’s courtroom Friday, prison guards, court marshals and prosecutors watched as a cosmetologist spent roughly two hours applying makeup to cover Morgan’s tattoos as he sat at the defense table, shackled and wearing an orange jumpsuit. With a test of the inmate makeover complete, none of the tattoos could be seen.

The judge walked in. “It looks good,” he said.

brief history lesson

This appeared as Cory Booker was speaking at DNC convention. Angela's decorum has degraded nearly to the level of my own, I sensed a kindred spirit unimpressed by position.

dark dude, a temporary diversion

I ran an errand and on the way back nearly home and on my own block I heard from behind me from a group that I passed, a man’s voice say urgently, “I gotta talk to that guy.” I kept walking within a few steps a tall ageless shirtless man caught up and walked beside me very close. “Look. Look what I got.”  I have no idea who this is. “Look at my hand. Look how dirty it is.”

Now I know. He’s the guy who asked me for a dollar so he could buy a beer. I recognized his hand. This is the second time he’s showed me his hand. And come to think of it, he’s the only person who's ever done that. He has a big dark dirty hand. It’s unsightly.  “It’s sticky. "I washed it and it  doesn’t come off, it keeps picking up dirt. It’s sticky. That’s how sticky the weed is. Look. Look what I got.” He’s excited.

He doesn’t look the same as before. He’s not wearing a shirt and he’s darker than before. His skin tone is broken. He's a mess. He hands me his bag but I don’t take it. I can’t. I’m holding two sticks. And I’m carrying a gallon of milk and pint of Häagen-Dazs and a hot sub sandwich on my back. I really must go. I’m starving.

“Look. Look what I got. I’m loaded, Dude.” He holds his arm  straight forward holding a small parcel a light grocery bag inside another grocery bag, double bagged,  crumpled up both twisted together forming a bundle. “I got cookies and butter and weed. The weed coated my hands back there with resin. Smell.”

“No.”

“Smell.”

“I gotta go. I’m starving.” I don't like this.

“Okay, okay, okay, wait.” He un twirls the bags reaches in and produces a sugar cookie, re-twirls his bags.  “Here.” Right there on the street in front of store windows, in front of my building. a resident  I know speaking with others walking past and greeting me as they go.

“Fine. Thank you. We’re even, eh? Thanks for that.”

Beer for cookie. Even Steven. I guess. I told him before I don’t drink because I have enough trouble walking. I think he assumes I’m in pain. If I can’t have beer and my building says "no smoking" then he’ll give me a cookie instead. I think his urgency is  street economics even Steven sharing ease the pain thing. I don’t know.

“Okay, go eat eat your dinner.”

Glad to depart. I enter my building. My hot and cold dinner element mixing. I’m home now. Democrat convention all over the place. What the heck. Ate his cookie first and now I’m quite high.

I’m fine. Except I cannot seem to get up off the sofa right now.

Yes I can.

I walk out onto the bumpy terrace barefooted and now inside the carpet feels like walking on cotton balls.

ISIS fighters try to flee battlefield dressed as women

Daily Mail:  This is the moment a group of ISIS fighters were caught red-handed trying to escape from a fierce battle - dressed as women.

The terrorists, all wearing full black veils, were captured as they attempted to run from the besieged town of Manbij in northern Syria.

But members of the Syrian Democratic Forces, which is trying to liberate the town from ISIS, saw through the disguise and arrested them.

"Southern California fire destroys 18 home; dozens at risk"

APA massive wildfire destroyed at least 18 homes and threatened 1,500 more Sunday as flames churned through tinder-dry canyons north of Los Angeles where authorities found a burned body in a neighborhood.

Planes and helicopters dropped water and retardant on the blaze that has blackened more than 34 square miles of brush on ridgelines near the city of Santa Clarita and the Angeles National Forest. About 300 miles up the coast, crews were battling another blaze spanning 16 square miles north of the majestic Big Sur region.

Crews faced another day of hot weather, low humidity and high winds that could once again fan the fires’ explosive growth. Shifting winds sent smoke away from greater Los Angeles and into desert communities, where residents were warned about poor air quality.
