Mrs Thatcher Song

I remember a guy singing this song at an IRA fundraiser in 1983 in a pub I used to frequent.

Back in the day they would often have a "hard man" sitting at the end of the bar taking contributions for the Cause. It was the times of Bobby Sands and the hunger strike and most of my friends who were working as bartenders were from Belfast. They were without exception not political but they knew enough to throw a twenty in the bucket and shut up.

Shine your heavenly body tonight!

This is the first video I remember being a big hit. When we used to go to the discos in Bay Ridge this song was playing over and over in the 1980's, Madonna was the latest thing. A hot young girl singing away and everyone dancing.

They had this bucket of blood bar on Atlantic Avenue that a couple of mooks who had a video store on Montague Street bought from the original owners. Remember  video stores? This was before BlockBusters when everyone would rent a video for five bucks and pay late fees. They were rolling in dough so they decided to open a bar. They came in and swept up the sawdust off the flow and covered the honest wood with formica and flat angles. They set up a big video screen and ran videos on a continuing loop. Madonna. Michael Jackson. Lionel Ritchie. All the videos that were on MTV at the time. They had an idea but they made one fatal mistake. Yes all the young people came to dance to the videos. They just didn't buy any drinks. You were better off with a bunch of fat Irish guys with big red noses farting and eating hard boiled eggs. They went out of business in six months.

Time and tide rests for no man. Those two guys are both dead. Most of the people who danced at those discos are retired and living in Florida. And Madonna?
