On Rooting for Something Real

It wasn't until I saw this over at Powerline, that I realized how the situation playing out with the Truckers is another version of the USA vs USSR Hockey Game played out at the 1980 Olympic Games.  The Mark Spitz dominated Summer Olympics of 1972 in Munich, were my first televised experience of the Olympic Games.  And in the fifty years  since, up until this year's games in China, I have looked forward to watching and enjoying all the Olympic Games that have followed, from opening ceremony and the lighting of the flame to the close.  This year, however, no interest.  Zip. Nada.  No time spent viewing the televised coverage and very little effort expended to read about what's happening there. But I can tell you I'm who I'm rooting for in the current contest of wills.

They should add Ice Fishing to the events, who wouldn't tune in?

Pro sports has become a mess. It took 40 years, but they did it.

The National Felons League should stop with the football and compete at what their players are best at.

Crime.

It could be like the Olympics.

They could compete in rape, wife beating and armed robbery.

Then they could walk away without bail.

It's the new normal.

We had a good time watching last night's game. After 12 years of playing for the Detroit Lions and living with loss, Stafford finally had the opportunity to apply what he'd learned and work with a team that supported him to pull off the win of his career. And that was after things went unexpectedly south for the team with a significant injury and change in plans.

The half-time show, however, was another wonder to behold, appearing as if TY's other vision of diverse play was being endorsed. No tits this time around, but a lot of gold, booty and crotch grabbing.

And the ads were also out there in a place I no longer inhabit, know about or imagine. When we turned off the TV at the end of the game, the silence that followed the din and dinging from the ads was amazing.

I stopped caring about corporate sports* at some point pre-covid and I haven't missed any of it in the slightest. Yesterday, I was driving and heard the pre-start announcement by The Rock (some musclbound hollowood phony who apparently purports to represent "middleamurkah") and just wondered how much more fake hoopla and hype can they pile on. Shut up and play. I remember John Madden complaining about all the pre-game delays and bullshit that happened and they've just added on more since his day.
*This includes the Olympics. I hate the Olympics. I used to love it but now it's all hype and no content and a lot of the featured athletes are hothouse flowers who wilt under pressure and rarely live up to the hype anymore. They should get a few wins under their belts before telling us all about their lives and crying a river on tv.
