On Toads and Diamonds; Human Camps and Campsites

I recently encountered the video below on another blog (American Digest) in a post about a house listed for sale for $295 million in LA.  In the twenty comments others left in response,  I was surprised to find no mention of the video or the other man-made "creation" it portrays.  That was the part of the post that impressed me the most, even more than the dollar amount or size and design features of the house.  However, I wasn’t sure how to respond, as I was half intrigued by the craziness involved all the way around, encompassing human camps and the two different campsites pictured.  I still don't know what to make of it.

Beyond the the awe and horror of seeing the mess of refuse left on the LA streets (in the early part of the video) was the wonder of the “bike sculpture” erected on a sidewalk in LA’s Koreatown by a homeless man to honor his dead girlfriend.  Standing 18 to 20 feet tall, it's comprised of a tangle of old bicycles and bicycles part wrapped together, with two American flags situated atop. Ironically,  it also surrounds one metal street sign (at the 2:31 mark) for BlueLA (dedicated to “electrifying LA one ride at a time”) and another conveying a warning of towing for unauthorized vehicles.  With the guy responsible for setting the whole thing up in public space over seven month's time expressing what sounds like his sincere hope that people "don't touch it" or come around to wreck or destroy his work.

What was I seeing in the overall?  A hazard?  An outcome?  A consequence?  Disconnect? Connection?  The essence of human creativity or a desire for meaning unusually or uniquely expressed?  One person or another out of touch with realty?  Whatever  that situation and conglomeration involves, the video, the "sculpture", the demeanor and attitude of the builder, and the curiosity and approach of the one doing the reporting definitely came through as a wonder to behold.   More impressive, in a myriad of ways, than a $295 million dollar house.

I'm sure Newsom has dreams of a Presidential nomination dancing in his head.

Not sure who said it, but somebody described the people fleeing CA as refugees. I guess they're the ones who can afford it.
