At the time, they probably did.But, at the same time, Madison Ave was allowed to lie its face off in commercials.
I have Sports mags from the 50's. Lot's of athletes sold cigs. Love the cover of SI w/ Dick "Don't Call Me Richie" Allen smoking a fag and juggling baseballs.
