"Oh the Humanity"

"We are here in Madison Wisconsin on a rainy Easter Sunday. Many people are in church and others who have just finished two boxes full of wine last night have not stopped throwing up yet. Alcoholics always have trouble on holiday. The enormous gas bag is approaching the docking area as the usual group of fan boys and lickspittles applaud.
It's starting to rain again; it's... the rain had (oh) slacked up a little bit. The back motors of the ship are just holding it (uh) just enough to keep it from...It's burst into flames!
Get this, Charlie; get this, Charlie! It's fire... and it's crashing! It's crashing terrible! Oh, my! Get out of the way, please! It's burning and bursting into flames and the... and it's falling on the mooring mast. And all the folks agree that this is terrible; this is the worst of the worst catastrophes in the world. Oh it's... [unintelligible] its flames... Crashing, oh! Four- or five-hundred feet into the sky and it... it's a terrific crash, ladies and gentlemen. It's smoke, and it's in flames now; and the frame is crashing to the ground, not quite to the mooring mast. Oh, the humanity!
And all the passengers screaming around here. Look they are running and screaming and lamenting what will they do without this gasbag.
I told you; it – I can't even talk to people, their friends are on there! Ah! It's... it... it's a... ah! I... I can't talk, ladies and gentlemen. Honest: it's just laying there, mass of smoking wreckage. Ah! And everybody can hardly breathe and talk and the screaming, lady, I... I... I'm sorry. Honest: I... I can hardly breathe. I... I'm going to step inside, where I cannot see it. Charlie, that's terrible. Ah, ah... I can't, I... Listen, folks; I... I'm gonna have to stop for a minute because I've lost my voice.
This is the worst thing I've ever witnessed."

Or the best, it's all a matter of perspective.

Sometimes one's gas just has to cut loose.

Well done, Troops.

LOL, nice job Trooper. The Red Queen strikes again at her splooge stooges.

I didn't realize there was color footage of the Hindenburg crash. Was it colorized? I've seen that footage countless times but always in B&W.

Given the history go this blog, it will be interesting to see if another blog appears soon.

While the heat must have been quite intense, note that the hydrogen fire burned upwards, away from the passengers. People who died of burns were probably killed by the flaming skin or the steel skeleton.

The hydrogen burned up almost instantly - the envelope of the airship, it is said, was made of doped cotton material that also contained iron and aluminum particles to allow it to conduct static electricity. That also makes an excellent rocket fuel, and that is what burned so nicely once it was lit.

What's the difference between Althouse and the Hindenburg? One is a flaming Nazi gasbag, the other is just a balloon.

Be sure to tip your waitress, I'll be here all week.

What strikes me as interesting and odd in retrospect is how long this blog went along with the request/mandate from the Athouse camp that the Athouse name not be mentioned here or trouble and unpleasantness of one kind or another would ensue. Which led to the Athouse blog being euphemisticallyy referred to here as TOP for The Other Place for several years afterward.
It's my sense it may have Lem's respect for Ann and Meade, and his appreciation for their financial support that prevented him from standing up that kind of bullying. To his credit, when he finally had enough of the ugliness that kept showing up, he asked them to leave the blog alone. Which they to their credit they appear to have done since.
I'm grateful to Lem for starting this blog and keepling it going for as long as he did. Also for knowing when it was time to turn it over to the care of another, and to the unnamed unknowns who currently pay the bills, take the heat and keep it going.

I agree. I hope you had a great Easter, Lem, wherever you are. You did a good thing.

Lots of typos in the 5:01 version, as I tried writing it on my phone. Back at my computer, I've edited it for repost here, but won't delete the first as it goes in sequence.

Maybe view it as a good thing. All the talented commenters will go out and settle on other blogs and realize that they don't need their daily dose of half-assed deconstruction of various NY Times/New Yorker, etc. would-be mandarin meanderings.
Lena Dunham's plus-sized clothing venture and whinge about feeling oppressed due to being fat: Is This Worthy Of Your Attention?
There were commenters over there who seemed to proceed like it was their job to convert the blogger to their way of political/cultural thinking and it should have been obvious long, long ago that that is never going to happen. Pointless exercise! It just provoked hostility which in turn provoked hostility which in turn provoked passive-aggressive lesson-giving and eventually it devolved to sploogestooge levels.
Who needs it?

And, yes, Lem is our hero!

Agreed, Amartel.

Now the Red Queen can go about redefining anything she wants without any pushback, just like The Roberts Court.

This is just drama. She'll have comments again before the end of the year. As incredible as it is, she has become more self absorbed and obsessed w/ minutiae since she retired. She'll come back to comments like a washed up boxer.

Actually, there seems to be comments available for her Ron DeSantis post today.

Link bad, dude.

She's a couple months older than my sister, so she's in her 7th decade. Keeping up gets a little harder. I know The Blonde is having a hard time hanging up the old rectal thermometer, so I can empathize.

I really do feel sorry for her since it seems this move is some kind of compensation for all the glitz she had when she was in school and everything. Some people just can't let things change.

Take that as you will.
