WLEM TV

 Overheard at Lem's:

We ate Imperial in the 60's. My guess is because it was cheaper than butter, not because of the Sturgeon General's fishy data.

My parents drove over the border to Illinois back then (we lived near Madison) to buy "colored oleo" which was yellow margarine. At the time, it was illegal to sell margarine that looked like butter in Wisconsin. Oleo margarine was especially high in trans fats because of the way it was made: Hydrogenating vegetable oil using a supported heterogenous catalyst essentially guaranteed it.

Remember all the margarine commercials back then?

And this was my personal favorite:

I learned my French accent from that guy and also from LeBeau on "Hogan's Heroes."

I have an Italian Pizzelle cookie recipe that calls for margarine.
It calls for a 1/2 and 1/2 combo of real butter and margarine. I used to buy Imperial. It's only a dollar/ pack of 4 sticks. Cannot beat that.
Earth Balance works and is better quality.

I remember that first commercial. It's not nice to fool mother nature. John Kerry wants to remove ALL carbon from the atmosphere. He must think we are idiots. Then again- the so-called "science" crowd are idiots.

I do the shopping. I went through a margarine phase in the 80's. But, living in WI at the time, I would chat w/ dairy farmers when I bartended @ a popular Italian restaurant in Madison/Monona. They convinced me to switch back to butter. We use less butter than most American families, since we use olive oil a lot. But damn, the flavor of butter is so superior.

flavor of butter is so superior to margarine. I like olive oil equal to butter.

Nick, what was the east side eatery called? Was run by one of the Garagano brothers?

Gargano

Yes - the flavor of butter is superior. Thank a cow. Thank you cow- for allowing us to hook your poor drained udders to machines so we can enjoy your tasty butter. Amen.

I recall my Uncle Jerry (not really my uncle) going on and on about Oleo. What the heck is Oleo, I would ask.

No, the correct word is udder

No I know - I saw that I DID use the word utter - and quickly embarrassingly erased it.
Then I said "Utter LOL" as a reaction to my stupidity.

Joe Biden, America's Putin said...

Never mind - I see the confusion and will erase it, too.

My father never liked butter, said all of it tasted rancid to him, so we were raised with margarine. When I got married my wife cooked with butter and it was good.

Now, no dairy products for me, so olive oil it is.

My favorite OO is D. O. Baena from Spain. Very peppery. Makes all the other olive oils taste bland.

Did I mention that I think Shelley Duvall was born to play that role in Popeye?

chick, It was the Colonial Inn, lka Angelo's, on Monona Drive. Owned by Angelo Fraboni. The dairy farmers would be waiting for me to open the bar @ 4p. They would have 2 brandy old fashioned and I would listen to their stories and complaints. I quickly learned you don't ask a dairy farmer howe many cows he has. You ask how many is he milking.
Angelo used the kitchen to supply his deli on campus w/ prepared food until he built a new deli and kitchen right behind the Colonial.

Sixty, when I saw Casino Royale with Daniel Craig and Eva Green they looked like Popeye and Olive Oyl.

However the udder/utterance above turned out, Utter Butter as a name would be my choice over anything that sounded more promising or imperial.

Speaking of cows there is an advertising push by, I'm guessing, the Georgia Dairy Farmers. We saw billboards along I-95 and I-75 in that state simply proclaiming "Nut milk is not milk".

I never saw one near a Chik-Fil-A billboard so I'm not sure how the cows feel about it.

"Utter Butter" I think that is a fine idea for a product. trademark it.
