Impeach This....The History of Impeachment

The fourth President that was in danger of impeachment was President James Garfield. Installed as a compromise candidate because of the schism in the Republican Party between the Stalwarts and the Half Breeds. He attempted to bridge the gap by having Stalwart member Chester Arthur as his Vice President. However the political rivalry added to the push for impeachment as the disloyal Republicans joined with the Democrats to demand his removal.

The real reason was Garfield's attempt to institute civil rights for blacks, reform the civil service  and build up the Navy that had been sadly neglected by the previous administration. However his opponents could not argue his policies so they used his sexual proclivities as a pretext.

President Garfield and his wife Lucretia was sybarites who enjoyed a wide and varied sex life.  Lucretia was of course renowned for her vestigial vagina in which she hid Tom Thumb the famous little person during the New York Draft riots. President Garfield had in fact been elected Grand Sachem of the Hellfire Club which as you well know was the sex cult of the Founding Fathers created by Benjamin Franklin. His sexual proclivities would have remained buried but for the fact that he served with General William Rosey Rosecrans who he served under in various positions during the Civil War. Rosey was a frequent guest at the sexual salon of the Garfields along with such luminaries as Lily Langtree and Mark Twain.

The rumors and innuendos flew throughout official Washington and infuriated the Democrats who were not getting action ever since they had to free their slaves. They were drafting the articles of impeachment and were preparing for hearings when President Garfield was assassinated by Charles J
Guiteau a disappointed orifice seeker.
