New York and curse in ASL

A "Y" had configuration is scraped across the palm of the opposite hand for "New York", and the same "Y" hand configuration is scraped against the index finger of the opposite hand for "curse."

Coincidence?

I think not!

Some people scrape back and forth for New York and others add the sign for "new." Some people aim the curse at something like a message shot as a dart, while others nick the index finger with a "Y" and let the "Y" go flying off in space.

I am unsure which sense of "curse" is intended by this sign. I think it means  "a curse on you" while it might mean some indifinite "sweary word."

Curse

New York

See? What we have here is a similarity.
