I wonder whether this artist ever looked at Jasper Johns' very beautiful map paintings of the United States. Hard to imagine his work without those precursors. I say this because despite the hit you over the head political point being made there is an aesthetic element to Murphy's work as well, which finds its ancestry in Johns.
