KLEM FM

My new favorite FM radio station, KUSC, recently did an hour long comparison of different versions of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite." I learned that the Leonard Bernstein/New York Philharmonic version is still considered the finest American recording.

The distinctive piano-like instrument is called a celesta -- so-named because it sounds so heavenly. I wonder if Sixty had one of these growing up?

Hey chickelit-- there's a video posted at Althouse yesterday on Amy Sedaris's apartment that brought you to mind today when I watched it.

In her eclectic collection of items she has a "really nice fake glass of wine" (4:45) that she says she picked up in Tokyo, along with a fake frosted beer can (2:59) also from Tokyo and a fake hot dog with a fork stuck in it. Somewhere over there is a shop selling items similar to the creations you were coming up with a while back!

There was no celeste in the house when I was growing up, probably because my father never found one at Goodwill for $4 or in an antique shop, too broken to play. But we did have a forte-piano, that was odd, and every sort of woodwind and brass instrument known to man and God. Pop could play them all, sight transpose and play any tune by ear. I'm tellin' ya, he coulda been somebody.

@MamaM: Sampuru (fake food) is considered an art form over in Japan. So actually, I was copying them. But many of my creations were originals.

There is a district in Tokyo where fake food is sold so that it can be displayed in restaurants - you can walk in and point and get the dish that most appeals to your eye. And you can get hungry just walking through that neighborhood.

In Tokyo you can fairly judge the quality of a restaurant by the quality of their displayed fake food.

I would think fake food would be popular in Hollywood and DC, where everyone is fake.
