A week later I was standing at attention on the hot tarmac at Lackland with some lunatic threatening me with grievous injury if I dared to move a muscle. I dearly wanted to wipe away the bead of sweat that was trickling down my neck, but I couldn't. That's when I had this sudden epiphany that high school was not going to be the worst time of my life.
