When men were men and we just shot the beaners instead of letting them steal our jobs!

Was Grandpa Walton somewhere in that scene? I couldn't pick him out.

The Rough Riders had a very bad time of it that day. At one point, the good old 10th Cavalry had to get the Spaniards off their backs.

And TR was noticeably grateful in his book, going out of his way to praise the colored troopers.

Iirc from the Norris book, the Battle of San Juan Hill lasted only a few hours. By way of contrast, McKinley was in the thick of it at Antietam and many other Civil War battles. We don't generally think of McKinley as a military hero but the was--and to a far greater extent than TR. Some men just look like war heroes, and others, with better credentials, don't fill the part.. Hemingway spent eighteen minutes in combat in WWI, and Salinger was in heavy action throughout WWII.......I myself served during Vietnam. I don't like to talk about it, but I know something about bloodshed. The heavy bond paper that the Air Force used while I was serving inflicted some savage paper cuts. I don't talk about them. I was just glad to have served my country in a time of need and have never claimed any special glory for my sacrifice.

After San Juan, there was Kettle, and that was a mess.
