WKRLEM: When Janis Joplin met Raquel Welch on the Dick Cavett Show (1970)

What's really interesting is that you get a glimpse of a what sweet young Texan Janis really was in real life.

What a tragedy.

And Rocky? Wowza!!!!!!!

Janis was really a genuine person. It is a shame she left us so soon.

I am not sure that deciding to become a heroin addict is a tragedy, but the end is fairly predictable.

"Everybody wants to be liked."

Not me. I want to be LOVED dammit!

She was a sweet kid more sinned against than sinning. Naive and exploited.

If you watch some of these old Cavett interviews you get a sense of her.

You know who she reminds me of? Kelly Clarkson.

The same Texas girl. Kelly just made better choices.

Janis never thought of herself as attractive. So she was driven to excess to prove her attractiveness to herself.

As much as I hate feminism she needed a little of that. It might have insulated her a little. Given her a chance.

She was a talent.

Raw unadulterated soul and pain. It's there in her voice.

I can't argue any of those points. There was a reason she started using heroin, but never once, in the history of humans, has anyone said "My life was not going too well, but then I started shooting smack and everything fell into place - it really turned my life around".
