Filed my federal taxes Saturday through Turbo Tax. When I tried to do my state tax, Turbo Tax kept trying to treat my wife's out-of-state income as taxable in my state. This has never happened before and I couldn't figure out what was going wrong.
Tried to do an extension but they want you to do a federal extension before you do the state and it's too late for that. I may try again tonight but it looks like I'll have to just file on paper later (and late).
Fortunately I shouldn't actually owe any state tax and they'll only lock me up for a couple of years.
Out of state income is taxable in both states, but the home state gives credit for taxes paid on it in the out-of-state. If out-of-state has a higher rate, you pay no new taxes on it in the home state. If lower, then you pay something in both.
The effect is that you pay an amount at the rate of the highest-rate state, divided variously.
Trooper had a ventricular fibrillation and is in South Nassau Community Hospital in Oceanside, NY. They are going to do an angiogram tomorrow to determine the cause. Jim is a prayerful man and I know would appreciate prayers for himself and Lisa.
Faraday described all this 170 years ago or so. I devoted several blogposts to Michael Faraday. Most were inspired by a small book you can read in a weekend. One was this one which retells how non-mathematical Faraday was. The dude was inquisitive as Hell. But my favorite one was this one. The quote there seems almost mythical, and I'm surprised it's not quoted more often.
A brief glance at causes and treatments for v-fib include "Faradic" shocks being used back in the 19th century. Also chemistry plays a big role in heart rhythm - the concentration and permeability of Na ions and K ions in cardiac cells is crucial to electrical conductivity in the heart.
The more I learn about such things the more amazed I become at the fact that we can walk around and do things.
Dick, She's struggling w/ the decision as to whether start immunotherapy or more conservative close surveillance. She is Stage 3A and right on the cusp of those 2 aforementioned treatment plans. She will decide soon. Thanks for your concern.
With the death of Barbara Bush, I wondered where he was, and was surprised and saddened to learn of his hospitalization and the seriousness of the cardiac event that put him there. Thank you for remaining in touch and passing that on ND. May peace be with Trooper and Lisa through the stress and discomfort of the day today, with good awareness reached of what can and needs to be done to move forward.

Drop a bar magnet into a copper pipe, is the old experiment.
The universe is marvelous. I had no idea about magnetism and copper reacting like that. Never heard of the bar magnet into a copper pipe...neat.
The ebay copper is cool, too. Would make a cute el cheapo gift for a kid.
Boy, am I in trouble.

There's an exception with pairs of states with reciprocity agreements. You owe in one or the other. I don't know the details, not having hit it.
Maybe turbotax wants you to file returns in both states, nonresident in one and resident in the other. That's what you do on paper.

Nick, that is worrisome news. I recall that he had a pacemaker implanted which have prevented that?

That is some serious news about Trooper - I hope he is okay.

Good luck, Trooper.
chick, You're correct. Jim did get a pacemaker. However, congestive heart disease is a relentlessly, progressive disease.
Love you, Troop. My sincerest best wishes for you and Lisa.
Best wishes for recovery, Trooper, and perhaps finding a way to lower stress in your life if that would help.
Prayers for Trooper.
How is your daughter, ND?
Yes, prayers for Troop. Get well big guy.

ND - I'm sorry she has to make a difficult decision. Prayers for you and your daughter, ND.
Well said, MamaM.
Mama and Dick, Thank you.
