Two great phenomena have swept politics in the last week or so: The Wolff book and the Oprah candidacy. My opinion is that they are foists by a bored media -- a media bored and at war with masculinity.
A bored media addicted to drama in which the roles of Victim, Persecutor and Rescuer are assigned and played out over and over, as described by the Karpman Drama Triangle.
As soon as I saw the introduction by that vapid Reese Witherspoon and then the polemic, I said to my bride, this is the kickoff of her campaign. Didn't need the echo chamber media to tell me.
Who would she/they pull in to run with her? I doubt it would be a man.
If she runs she will be ridiculed mercilessly.
"Wouldn't anyone who runs be ridiculed mercilessly?" was my first thought. With the second being, "No, some features and behaviors will be overlooked or left alone under the protective cover of not wanting to appear racist. Her hair won't be able to be touched as Trump's was. The scope of the ridicule will be different and bound by PC.
I doubt she wants to run. She's got a real easy gig now - not that she didn't work hard for it early on but it's all coast now. Running for president would be a slog, even with all the usual loud lefty clowns behind her.
Oprah would be ridiculed and, as with Obama, the ridicule would be repurposed as racism. So the blanket, automatic "bounce off me and stick to you" deflection effect would be re-initiated regardless of the merits of the criticism. With Trump, the "bounce off me and stick to you" effect works because of the utterly depraved low quality of the criticism and because Donny Two Scoops plays offense, not because the media is playing defense for him as with Obama.
I disagree with the proposition that voting for Trump means you can't ridicule proposed candidate Oprah. What blither! Who thinks like that? Other than people who don't think but make decisions based on feelings in the moment/manufactured for you by the media. I was opposed to Trump for a long time, based on his own statements and conduct, and reconciled only after he made it clearer and clearer that he would implement conservative policies that promote individual freedom and self-sufficiency and put America first (like that's some sort of revoloootionary concept). Also, when it became clear that he was not a creature of the media. That was a policy-based decision. His constant harassment of the media is a bonus and does provide great emotional gratification, though that, too, is grounded in the fact that the media (as a whole) is one-sided, incompetent, political and sloppy and making the Media Great (or somewhat less of a disaster) is a fact-based policy goal.
Yeah. You're the woman wearing black at the Globes as prearranged. Following the crowd. Someone else doing the thinking for you. And it's not that bright. Letting your dress say what you dare not speak. Showing how woke you are.
But that's okay because your followers, your viewers, your supporters are not that bright either. You lost half of them by being torn between your identities. The choice came automatically limited between a raw unproven unknown entity because he is half black, and the other a hopelessly corrupted shiftless grasping amoral female. Both using politics, using you to attain power. It's not possible to think outside the tight boxes provided. You must put on your blinders and vote.
That reminded me. I just now transported back through time to an unhappy moment. Boink. And I'm there. I'm the hero of this very dull stupid story.
The FRB has huge wooden conference table the likes of which you see in movies. It's a very impressive conference room.
Incidental to my story, the president bought two of my Egyptian frescos and one was hanging in that room. Whenever we had a meeting in there I was continuously distracted by my own art. Is that weird, or what? I kept mentally critiquing it thinking about the things I'll correct next time. Like get all the geese's feet the same. They bugged me. The Geese of Meidum. You've seen it. It's famous. Look it up, Lookeruppers.
This meeting was an annual management seminar. They're incredibly inane and they keep us from our real work while providing nothing. It's a very poor investment. And they occur every year.
The instructors are always recent MBA graduates with nothing better to do.
The woman told us to draw a grid of dots then connect with four lines the nine dots inside a box and not lifting the pencil. This is clearly impossible to do by keeping the lines in the box. But instructor didn't tell us we must do that. So I drew way outside the box and connected the dots. It's the only solution. And you can see by doing this in a management seminar, the lesson is not to assume restrictions unstated and to think outside the box. It's a common children's puzzle. Nobody else in the room reached this conclusion. Not one. Everyone in the room failed. And I'm sitting there thinking, man, bankers really are impressively unimaginative. Like I'm some sort of rebel for such an ordinary thing with this children's puzzle.
Those are Oprah Winfrey voters. Confounded by the imagined conundrum of boxed in racism and sexism. None can connect the dots by drawing their lines outside of the irrelevant boxes when no one suggested they must stay within them. None can even think, well, I don't have to vote Democrat. They're stuck.
I don't think she has that wide-spread of an appeal. I think she thought Best Picture or something was in the works for her movie, 'Beloved,' but:
American horror-drama film based on Toni Morrison's 1987 novel of the same name, directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover, and Thandie Newton. The plot centers on a former slave after the American Civil War, her haunting by a poltergeist, and the visitation of her reincarnated daughter whom she murdered out of desperation to save her from a slave owner. Despite being a box office bomb,[3] Beloved received an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design for Colleen Atwood, and both Danny Glover and Kimberly Elise received praise for their performances."
I think the oppo will go for the jugular about her girls' school in Africa. Some sort of scandal.
DB, great pick up on the glasses. I thought the same thing re looking intelligent, but did not make the Rick Perry connection.
Well, they have this thing called a primary. What would Hillary Rodham Bitch Clinton have to say about The Oprah. Or, the Indian woman, Elizahauntas Squaw Warren, or, or, Kamala Dot on the Forehead Harris? All formidable opponents. OH, OH, and maybe Joe The Biden?
Oprah. Pfft. She promoted some of the dumbest, most fraudulent people ever assembled on a TV show.
Were Oprah to run, would she be treated to a Time magazine cover in which her skin color, the size of her lips, and style/texture/color of her hair are focused on and emphasized as they were with Trump whose orange skin, small mouth and yellow flyaway hair were the three features used to define the image presented? I think not.
I agree with Ricpic, like her or not, Oprah could be formidable candidate based on identity and the desperation of the Democrats, especially if she were paired with someone with political experience. All the woman who were willing to overlook Hillary's chicanery aren't going to be put off by tales from the boarding school.
They said that Ginger Rogers did it backwards and in high heels. Oprah will do it on a diet and in spandex. If Trump had to go on a diet and wear spandex, he would never have run. Perhaps Oprah will come to the same conclusion.

I'd also toss in desperate.
Oprah with those glasses reminds me of Trump ridiculing Rick Perry's glasses, that he wears them to make himself seem smart.

Nice tags.
Oprah would be a formidable candidate. Not because she has any substance, because of one word -- identity.
Who would she/they pull in to run with her? I doubt it would be a man.

Any excuse to not talk about all Dem problems and Trump successes. Oprah keeps hope alive for the anxious zombies.

When the media are unable to fawn and emote over Obama and other D's - yes - they get bored.
