The song has a 5/4 time signature which is unusual for rock. It's more common in jazz -- for example, as in Dave Brubeck's Take Five and also the Mission Impossible theme song.
One of my favorite Jethro Tull songs. They had another good one on their Christmas CD (yes, Jethro Tull recorded a Christmas album) called "We Five Kings.

Try reciting the word hippopotamus over and over until you get hypnotized in the groove. Any five syllable word works.

Harder still is counting out 4 hippopotami to get the full measure of the denominator. But, it works!

Saw Jethro Tull in Philly @ the Spectrum in the early 70's. It's all a blur.
I saw Tull about thirty times back in the day. It was the one group I never missed.
