WKRLEM: See what happens when you mock the God Emperor?

Nate Silver counted the votes!
Of course the crap movie about the black gay drug dealer had to get the affirmative action Oscar!

Thank God I was watching the giraffe giving birth live stream all night.

You can't make this crap up.

Marcia...Marcia....Marcia!

The first I heard of Moonlight was the Screen Junkies YouTube video on the Oscar 2017 trailer. Boy did they ever call it.

Wouldn't it be funny if we all turned our backs on hollywood?

I have.

Titus said...

The drug dealer wasn't the gay in Moonlight.

What if this was the other way around and Moonlight was first given the award and half way through their acceptance speech were told La La Land was the real winner? Now that would of been interesting.

I've been skipping the annual Buffoon Parades for years. Nothing interesting ever happens. The fashion isn't even interesting anymore. It's all hype.

I didn't see any of these movies Titus but that is the recap that they give about that movie.

But I will take you word for it.

Last movie I went to was Interstellar.

I only went to one movie in the last three years. When we were in Florida the kids took us to see Star Wars in this new movie theater that had easy chairs and waitress service. It was very pleasant and very expensive.

A big movie like that is great on the big screen. But most movies are available on Pay Per View within a month of being released. When you have a wide screen smart TV you don't need to go to the movies. Cost of two tickets is about $30 and the snacks at least another $30. Cost of Pay Per View usually about $5.99 even on Amazon Streaming.

I have been enjoying movies off of Youtube on the Smart TV. I pick an actor or a style and watch a series.

Lately I have been doing a Bruce Cabot marathon. He made a bunch of cool Westerns in the 1950's that are on Youtube.

Last night I saw "Best of the Badman" with Robert Ryan where Bruce plays Cole Younger. Very cool.

You should check it out ed. You would enjoy it.

Mahershala Ali's character is straight and the drug dealer.

The gay is played by three characters at different ages in their life. Each age they are completely fucked up.

Trooper York said...

Here's the thing.

Who cares?

Not regular normal Americans. They are all watching Star Wars or the cartoon fish. That movie made what....twenty bucks at the box office. Just like the rest of the crap that was nominated.

Hollywood is full of crap.

Trooper York said...

The true atrocity this year is that they took a classic like "The Magnificent Seven" and remade it as a politically correct piece of shit.

Now I hear they want to remake "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" in the modern day.

Is nothing sacred.

edutcher said...

Cabot was one of those big, husky guys who came out of WWII like Forrest Tucker or Edmond O'Brien who could play a good guy or a bad guy.

He became a part of the Wayne Stock Company after "The Comancheros", usually as part of the Duke's posse.

The need to remake the Western as political theater is testament to the fact Hollyweird is running on empty. The irony is they did their best to destroy the Western in the 70s, but now find they need it because it's the only way to get people college age and over into a movie theater. One presumes the eye candy is getting boring even for the high schoolers.

Trooper York said...

Here is the announcement of the remake.

They want to set it in Pennsylvania in the 1980's. How does that work? Who is Liberty Valance?
A factory executive?

They wanted Terence Winter who did the Soprano's to run it but he opted out. Smart.

I don't know what Troop's secret is but whenever I want to see a movie on youtube, and not even a contemporary movie, they're not available free. I was looking at a documentary about Robert Mitchum and it piqued my interest in The Sundownders, that's like a sixty five year old film. Nope, not available for free.

ricpic said...

I should've added that if it ain't free I ain't viewing. Hey, I'm not a richie like Titus!

I didn't watch the oscars much less any of the movies that were nominated (I think). Hollywood has a serious depressive neurosis problem. Their scripts and movies are sad, dower, unhappy, and depressing. There is no redeeming quality in anything they've done lately.

Last movies I saw were Revenant and Captain Fantastic and an old one, The Cooler.

Revenant was entertaining and depicted the f-ing daily violence and mayhem we all missed by just 100 or so years.

And Captain Fantastic. Thoroughly entertaining and great acting.

The Cooler was eh. Good acting by Alec Baldwin.

Just got Amazon Prime so I expect to watch more movies than usual. It has some very good original TV series too like Sneaky Pete, Goliath and The Man in the High Castle.

April- just when you think you escaped Hollywood, it may pull you back in. I try not to view while thinking about how dumb and liberal the actor is in real life.

ricpic said...

Any movie that's made well is entertaining. Including downers. I realize I'm not going to win this argument. If you go to the movies for the equivalent of candy that's great. I mean that's your preference and your business and I have no argument with it. All I'm saying is that the weirdest most neurotic tale can be a pleasure to view, as long as it's made well. But I guess such films are a special taste. Sidney Lumet's The Fugitive Kind, based on a play by Tennessee Williams is about as neurotic and doomed as it gets. But the genius of his directing makes it fascinating. Almost everything Elia Kazan directed is riveting no matter how weird. Examples are Splendor In The Grass, screenplay by the always depressive William Inge; Wild River, a complete downer but filmed with terrific verve; On The Waterfront, which isn't exactly a walk in the park. The reason I reacted so strongly to Manchester By The Sea, which is total gloom from start to finish, is that it's terrific moviemaking with a performance for the ages by Casey Affleck.

ricpic said...

I forgot to add that Wild River stars Montgomery Clift after an automobile accident that nearly killed him and wrecked his face. He's a walking accident and you can't look away.

Nothing that embarrasses Hollywood is alien to me. It was quite pleasant to see their ineptitude on display. Still, the moment could have been better. I would have preferred to see Meryl Streep in the role of chief fuck up. Also, it would have been more dramatic if one of the Moonlight people had gone all Kanye and started lecturing everybody. Maybe even a Ray Rice or Chris Brown moment where someone grabbed an Oscar and beat Meryl senseless with it, Well, that might be going too far and be detrimental for race relations. Nonetheless, it would be one of those magical moments that only Hollywood on Oscar night can deliver.

I don't begrudge anyone their entertainment choices. Most movies are long and boring and very predictable. The spectacle movies like X-Men or Avengers or Ben Hur are fun in the big scene.

I much prefer episodic long form TV. You can follow characters over seasons. One shot deals are not as much fun.

I feel the same way about books. I like a good series with the same characters over several books. Not one offs.

Trooper York said...

A really good series on Amazon Streaming is the Harry Bosch series which has two seasons. Based on the novels it is a moody film noir style flick. Derivative but good for what it is. True to the books.

The thing is so much of entertainment is formula. Harry Bosch is a good example. Lots of action and good stories. But it hits all the beats.

Lonely hero living in isolation.
Fights with the higher ups.
Has an ally with his immediate boss.
Ex wife still in the picture but he can bang other chicks he meets who then die in the third reel.
Listens to jazz.
He is a rebel but he really cares.

Most of entertainment be it TV or movies is paint by the numbers.

Trooper York said...

You liked Manchester by the sea because of it's film noir realistic tones. Seedy people doing seedy things. I didn't see it but I saw the trailer. That is enough to know the whole story.

I am curious that you can't get movies on Youtube. What I do is type in the name of the movie or TV show I want to watch. For instance I went to Bruce Cabot's wikipedia page and looked up his movies. Then I went to Youtube in typed in "Best of the Badmen" Full movie and a couple of choices came up. Often they are posted from overseas. Russia or Poland or Brazil. Fans videotape movies and put them on Youtube. They stay up until the copyright police catch up and tell them to pull them.

Last summer I wanted to watch the old Wyatt Earp TV series with Hugh O'Brian. So I just put in Wyatt Earp TV Series Full Episodes and a guy came up who had put all of the episodes up. So every night before I went to bed a watched an episode. About a month later they were all pulled down. Later the guy reposted them. I guess it is like a game for these guys.

You can get a lot of great content. Especially obscure stuff that people don't care about anymore and that they aren't making money off of anymore so they just ignore it.

Trooper York said...

Amazon is great if you give up cable. You can sign up for premiums like Showtime and HBO. I signed up for something called the "Faith and Family" network that shows Christian based movies. Great to watch when you don't want to see gore and murder.

Last night we watched "When Calls the Heart" which is about a love story with a Mountie and a school teacher in the turn of last century. Then a Hallmark movie about Valentines Day. While monitoring the giraffe about to give birth live streaming on the internet.

All in all a lot more fun that some stupid Oscar telecast.

As I wrote here previously, I watched all of Die Dreigroschenoper on YouTube. It was trilling.

But seriously folks, I have no idea where else I might have found the 1931 German version of that play/musical. Blue ribbon production. And since it was free, I don't feel like I overpaid. Heck, I probably owe them 3 cents at this point. That's a Lotte Lenya, eh Mackie? But not Tawdry nor Darin enough for some.

Saw Manchester by the Sea Saturday. True, it was, "...sad, dower, unhappy, and depressing." But, it was also very well done based on a very believable scenario. Good acting, good photography. Not political. It also didn't have a lot to hang a hat on, other than the basic premise. So, there was underage sex, bar fights, matrimonial disharmony. So, though it was well done, I have no idea why it was a nominated movie for best picture. Well, other than the fact that H-wood doesn't have what it takes anymore to make, what I would consider to be, an Oscar worthy film. And no, I haven't watched the slobber fest Oscar's in years... well, other than seeing a few moments of it as I pass by my wife's watching on my way to the computer.
