Gun Control Thriller ‘Miss Sloane’ Has One of the Worst Opening Weekends Ever

Miss Sloane, the gun control thriller starring Jessica Chastain, over the weekend posted one of the worst performances of the past 35 years for a movie in wide release.
The movie pulled in $1,167 on average at the 1,648 theaters across the country it was shown in. It made $1,922,300, meaning it was the 11th-highest grossing movie in the country. It is number 79 on Box Office Mojo’s list of Worst Opening Weekend by Per-Theater Average since 1982.
That means Miss Sloane earned less money per theater than Pride and Prejudice and ZombiesShaun the Sheep MovieLawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace, and Gigli.
Industry observers criticized the movie’s performance on Monday. Time said the movie “fizzled in its wide expansion.” Fortune described it as struggling. The Los Angeles Times said Miss Sloane failed to meet “an already lackluster” projection of $5 million for the weekend.

You mean most people don't want to pay $11-15 to get a boring chidey lecture?

Imagine that!

Good Lord! Beaten by Shaun the Sheep and The Lawnmower Man. And Gigli.
Embarrassing.
Apparently, the public is not interested in the travails and triumph of the Gun Crusader.
If only someone had mentioned that most people don't find gun grabbers and their clearly phony, reverse-engineered, parallel universe, faux history-drama in any way compelling.
If only there was some way to figure this out in advance. It's all just so mysterious!

How do you make a movie about gun control thrilling? Well, if you are anti-2A proponent, you get a pretty woman to play a lobbyist who joins an outfit hell bent on gun control while the pro-gunners and Big Armaments comes gunning for you, but not in the typical way you think. They aren't gunning for you with actual firearms, just their words. Yeah, that will show em' and make for riveting drama. In fact, what it really shows is that lobbyists are nothing more than paid whores shilling for a cause whether they believe it or not. It's actually quite compelling in the starkness of how the lobbyist industry works.

It's about as compelling as unclogging a drain. How these movies get made or are funded is or was a mystery, but a movie like this is clearly propaganda and I'll bet you if you follow the money you'll get to who's behind it. Hopefully with a Trump presidency we will see a few pro-2A legislation, but I will never see it living in California since they will oppose any effort to undo their anti-2A gun laws.

I take it Lawnmower Man is not a Christmas 🎄 movie.

Hey Lem, Lawnmower Man Rocked!

Let's be accurate here. The first Lawnmower Man was an interesting, productive experience for all involved and featured a talented title character. It was Lawnmower Man 2, the second attempt, that was a flop. This was largely due to the drop off in the quality of the lead.

You mean less than Ishtar or Heaven's Gate?

I mean, when you beat Gigli, all hope is lost. This actually looks really bad for Jessica Chastain. Who I find particularly attractive, but exceedingly dumb in even taking this role.

She took the role to make amends for abiding "torture" in Zero Dark Thirty.

Shaun The Sheep movie is actually pretty good. It's not up to the level of Chicken Run, which is the Citizen Kane of claymation movies, , but it's pretty good.....I like Jessica Chastain. In her next movie, she'll probably play a trained government assassin who kills five people during the opening credits. Then she falls in love with one of her targets and they spend the rest of the movie exposing a government plot, engineered by an orange haired President, to kill all the scientists working on a solar cell battery that makes oil power an obsolete technology.

I take back my unfair disparagement of Shaun the Sheep and Lawnmower Man. Especially the sheep; animation is the only thing Hollywood does well anymore. I don't see many movies, they're all so like William's very apt description of a parallel reality complete with presumptions that I don't recognize. Actually, I think the last movie I saw all the way through was on an airplane. Captive audience. Ironically, it also involved a female government agent with an unlikely mission and also unlikely powers and romantic attachments - but it was a comedy. It starred that larger-sized actress who is funny when the script is good.
