Newt Gingrich on Donald Trump back in February

Pro Publica:  “This is not a guy who’s shallow or simple, but he is a guy who knows an immense amount about marketing, which is why he talks at a fourth-grade level. He talks at the lowest level of any candidate in either party, not because he’s stupid,” Gingrich said told the crowd of executive-level political staffers and corporate sponsors. “He does it because he knows if you talk at a fourth-grade level everybody can understand you.”

Gingrich remained neutral in the GOP primary until May, when he endorsed Trump and said he wouldn’t rule out joining the ticket. He met Wednesday with Trump in Indiana and according to CNN was seen leaving a hotel in the same motorcade as Trump’s children.

In the February speech, Gingrich said he had no idea what kind of president Trump might be. “I do not believe anybody including Trump can tell you what a Trump presidency would be like,” Gingrich said.

The recording of the speech was made available to ProPublica by the Center for Media and Democracy, a Madison, Wisconsin, group with the stated goal of exposing corporate influences on politics.

At one point, Gingrich suggested he was shocked to hear of a highly educated supporter of Trump’s. “I had a very sophisticated medical doctor in Des Moines write me two days ago and say he sent a thousand dollar check to Trump. And I wrote back and said what are you doing?” Gingrich said to laughs. “He said I have finally concluded that we have to kick over the table in Washington.”

Gingrich and the Trump campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment Wednesday evening.

I will vote Libertarian if Trump picks this pompous hypocrite as VP. He can give him any other post, including SOS or Chief of Staff. That's fine. Not VP.

As I say, eminence grise.

But he's right about how trump reaches people.

Having been in sales and marketing and in dealing with the public most of my life, this is excellent advice.

In fact this advice is the reason for my Husband's blog name Dumbplumber. Dumb Plumber was a pregnant idea sired by an Edward Jones Investment manager who, in the summer of 2000, while pitching $85 World Com and $48 Williams Oil and Gas, was lecturing his brokers on presenting investment ideas that, ”even a dumb plumber could understand”. Even a dumb plumber knows better than to buy at the top of the market!

While this was simplistic and actually sort of insulting advice from the manager it is spot on. You are trying to present very complicated, economic, mathematical, strategic concepts to people who are not very educated in those topics. If you use inside jargon, use complicated concepts you will not only bore your clients to death you will never do any business. People will feel as if you are "talking down" to them when you get all technical and overly complex. You MUST bring the conversation to an area where they can understand and THEN you can educate and bring the level of detail upward.

Occasionally, I would have a client who was a literal engineer or one with a very technical mathematical mind. At that point I would certainly move up the scale from a 4th grade level and we could get into the detail, nuts and bolts of the economics and investment mechanics. I loved those clients <3

THIS is exactly what Trump is doing. We will make Mexico pay for the wall!!!! Yay.

He doesn't need to go into detailed explanation about currency manipulation, trade agreements, taxes, import duties, fees and taxes on money sent out of the country by illegals or even legals. Sure he could start lecturing the country on the economics of international trade, foreign tax codes, the US tax code, income generated across the borders, even on the composition of concrete and where the steel for the fence would come from. BOOOOOORING. and unnecessary. Plus he would have lost all the momentum and enthusiasm of the early part of the campaign.

Ted Cruz, while probably one of the brightest people in politics, was the lecturing type. Talking down to the people. What he said was mostly true, but it did NOT resonate. He didn't SELL himself or market his campaign. Ted is the unsuccessful broker, the car salesman who talks about the compression ratio instead of selling the car.

Trump is a master at marketing and selling. Plus, as a graduate of the Wharton School of Business...Trump knows his products.....economics and business. The art of the deal is the same techniques that any successful political figure should know as well.

So...Spinelli decides to throw a temper tantrum and throw away his vote on a candidate that has zero chance of winning. Hillary can become dictator of the US because he just can't get everything he wants. Waaaaaaah. Noted.

Also note. I too hope that Trump does not pick Newt as VP. I think it would be a bad choice. But I'm too old to throw a temper tantrum and not dumb enough that I want Hillary to win.

Newt.is a very smart guy. Too smart for his own good.

He had the insiders contempt for Trump at the beginning as evidenced by these quotes. But he was smart enough o figure out what was going on and to get on board the Trump train.

I still doubt that he will be the VP pick. Let's see what happens first.

Trooper York said...

You can't expect a dedicated Obama voter and hypocrite to vote for Trump. There will always be an excuse.

Just as I expect that April will not vote for Trump either. She will have a similarly valid reason. Maybe the color of his tie.

A scorpion is a scorpion.

Trump needs to focus n the votes he can get. Working class Americans who truly want Law and Order and America First.

FWIW, Ras has Trump up 7.

Fine, you say - Black Rock has them dead even. A couple of months ago, Last Refuge ran the crosstabs and said the Lefty pollsters were giving Hillary and 8 point skew.

Still think there isn't a skew?

oopsy, what you say about marketing is dead on. You've got to be able to sell it.

Regarding your point about the One True Ted, when I was going for my CS degree, one required class was taught by a guy who was there because he brought in grants - very brilliant, but he couldn't teach worth a damn. Guys were failing right and left. One night, one of the regular profs had to fill in and knew how to sell the material.

You could just see the light bulbs go on all over the room.

PS This is only for IA, but consider broader implications. Monmouth says Trump leads big among under 50s.

Not without reason, you yawn.

How many of those young people are Bernies?

We know the Hildabeast had a problem wit yoots. If she still has, this could be big trouble.

All sorts of stellar people do not want on that train.

Most of them Whigs.

Besides, last week, April said Newt was a loser.

What stellar people? Affirmative action tokens like Susana Martinez and Niki Haley? Little Marco? Scott Walker? Jeb?

This is a new movement who needs to bring new people to the fore. This is just the beginning.

Newt and Pence are nods to the establishment nothing more. I would go even further outside the box myself but I understand what Trump is doing here. Unfortunately it is conventional.

I'll say it again. Newt is his own worst enemy. He's very bright and very well-read, but he can't keep his mouth shut and feels it necessary to inject himself into things that he would best pass up.

An expert on the House and how it works, yes (like Sessions on the Senate, for that matter), but Trump, having turned 70 on Flag Day will want someone younger. Pence, silver hair notwithstanding, is 57 (as is the dark haired Flynn BTW), so he would be an optimal choice. Newt is 73.

Troop, Pence would be a Bush 41 choice to calm the party elders, as was done in '80, but I'm not convinced he gets the nod.

I'm still wondering if the media isn't just being played.

I find you tedious, an annoying know-it-all-- with your endless unwanted lectures and asinine straw men. Your web addiction doesn't speak well of you. Really ed - stop making comments directed at me. I'm not interested.

I think Newt would be a pliable choice and here's why. Trump needs a way to navigate Congress and needs info on the players involved since he doesn't know many of them because he's really not considered an insider. Newt is that inside man. He knows these people and how they think. Newt can be Trump's inside politician while still being on the outside. There is serious value i this. Do not underestimate Newt as a formidable player. He is a craven politicrat, but he's a policy wonk ideas guy who knows how to deal with these people. He would bring street cred to Trump in that way.

My God, he's one of the worst of the NRO crowd. Why, in god's name, would you want to quote him?

BTW Little Marco and Carson and the One True Ted all lost to Trump, does that make them losers, too?

(from what I see, Cruz' chances of re-election, much like Marco's, are sinking by the bow; no wonder he took that Air Force One ride)

Dust Bunny Queen said...

I don't dislike Newt at all. I just feel that he has a lot of excess baggage. Personal stuff that the media will be able to exploit to the max. Plus Newt (I believe) is still carrying several million dollars of debt from his Presidential campaign.

The Post is making a big deal about this already The former House speaker’s 2012 campaign committee owes more than $4 million to about 100 vendors, including firms that provided charter flights, event planning, public relations and security services. So, you can be assured IF he is the VP pick they will all dog pile onto this.

Newt would be excellent as the inside man in Congress. HOWEVER, they need to get elected first. I have my doubts because the media mass dog piling on and constant negative information being fed to the low information voters who believe any of the drivel that they are fed.

WINNING is the first goal. Without that, you have nothing.

edutcher said...

Allen, Trump told Fox he wasn't looking for an attack dog (he really doesn't need one).

If he wanted one, Pence would not be under consideration, methinks.

Sessions would be a good pick, but many people do not know who Sessions is. But Newt? Newt has game, he has name recogniition, he knows the rules of the senate as well as the house (for the most part). His K street connections alone validate him in that regard. That's just my 2 cents.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

Trump has a ton of excess baggage and we already know what Newts baggage will be. It was brought up during the '12 debates. Water under the bridge. Again, my 2 cents.

Nick says (or drools): FUCK YOU to anyone who says voting for whom you want is throwing away your vote. and some more fuckity fuck fucks. Hope you didn't get your keyboard wet with spittle. LOL

You are not voting for someone you WANT, because as you plainly stated you are voting "against" Newt, or the against the idea of Newt. UNLESS you were already planning to vote for the Libertarian candidate and had supported that person all along, that would be one thing. But to vote out of spite or some sort of fit of pique IS your choice. Just don't pretend it is anything else. You aren't fooling anyone.

We know that Cruz is April's choice and I would respect her voting for Cruz, even though he has a snowball's chance in hell to become President this time. Respect it because it is her choice and he is the guy she supported all along and not some stompy feet type of toddler tantrum move.

ndspinelli said...

I don't equivocate or spin, DBQ. If you don't know that about me then you haven't been paying attention. Virtually all the spin here comes from 2 hard liner Trump people. My disdain for Trump is well documented. However, I have shown objectivity, unless one is a hard liner. I actually think we are in the same ballpark regarding our thoughts on Trump. You certainly like him more than I, but I don't think you swoon like some here.

I am a libertarian. I have stated that hundreds of times here and elsewhere and have railed against the duopoly countless times. That's what drew me to Turley. I have voted for the Libertarian Party in the past, knowing full well they were kooks. I truly want to destroy the duopoly. This Gary Johnson is less kooky than previous Libertarians. If it were anyone one but Hillary I would almost certainly have been declared myself a Libertarian voter long ago. But it is Hillary, so I am planning on holding my nose and voting for Trump. I have said this all on other forums. I am a man of my word. Attorneys who despise me will admit that. As long as it's not Newt, I will vote for Trump. If it is Newt, I will vote for who I prefer, the Libertarian candidate. He's more conservative in many respects than is Trump. I see he's @ 12%. I think Johnson[Gary, not Lyndon] will probably draw more angry Bernie voters than from anywhere else. I surmise he's @ 12% because of that. The duopoly requires 18% to debate. That's horseshit. There should be a criteria, but much lower than 18%. I voted for Ross Perot and for John Anderson. I have a history of iconoclastic votes, always wanting to destroy the duopoly. We need more choices than Coke and Pepsi.

The assholes who keep bringing up my Obama vote are just angry men. I was forthright in admitting that stupid vote in 2008. I sure the fuck was not proud of it, but I'm a standup guy. I have confessed my sin and admitted the foolishness. Now, one of these assholes who continually brings it up claims to be a Catholic. That's because he goes to church. But, any true Christian would accept someone's act of contrition and not keep bringing it up every time they get angry. That's what the priests and nuns taught me anyway.

Dear corrupt left, go F yourselves said...

Trump was my 16th choice out of 17. Bush was 17.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

I voted for Ross Perot, twice. And correct we need more choices. That's why I drink scotch or bourbon. Many many good choices.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

My mistake April. I thought that Cruz was your candidate.

Trooper York said...

Anyone who voted for Obama has forfeited any consideration of their political opinion for all time. Forever. Forgiveness doesn't enter into it. It is a degree of stupidity that is an indelible stain that can never be removed. Like leprosy or something.

I have complete confidence that the people who rag on Trump will never vote for him. So they can be safely ignored. They pretend that they will but it is all bullshit.

That's the reason why when Trump does something to throw a bone to the conservatives and establishment by picking a safe non-controversial VP like Pence they scream that it is boring and wrong. Of course if he picked an out of the box candidate they would say he is not "presidential" and a lose canon reality show star. He can't win with these mooks so I think he shouldn't try.

Tonight he is getting hit because he is deferring announcing his VP because of the Paris attacks. It is all part of the same old scam. Trump needs to reach out to the American Public that has been abandoned by the Political Class. The ones that are tied of being lied to by the sleazy media. The ones that are tired of the election of so called Conservatives who are really the Washington Generals who are in to lose as long as their paymasters get to dip their beaks. I think those people are the majority. They have been quiet. They watch their TV's and have their barbecues and don't pay attention. But now that savages are murdering cops in wholesale lots and imported scumbag terrorists are turning Everytown USA into Beirut they are starting to wake up.

That is the wave that is going to carry Trump to victory.

America First, Last and Always.
