KLEM FM: My Favorite Dylan Covers

Compiled from my iTunes according to my "played" metric which spans a number of years. Number 10 is least played; number 1 has the most plays:

10. Mama, You've Been On My Mind by Rod Stewart from his 1972 LP "Never A Dull Moment."

9. The Mighty Quinn (The Eskimo) by Manfred Mann and his Earth Band (1968).

8. All I Really Want To Do by The Byrds (1965).  I have three Byrds songs in my top ten so there is something special about them. I suppose it's their sound. They really did invent a new sound as I described here.

7. Don't Think Twice by Mike Ness (1999)

6. All Along The Watchtower by The Jimi Hendrix Experience (1968)

5. My Back Pages by The Byrds (1967)

4. It's All Over Now Baby Blue by Them (that's Van Morrison in disguise, 1966). I probably under-counted this version and it should be ranked higher. But the song only recently became available on iTunes.

3. Mr. Tambourine Man, The Byrds (1965)

2. Changing Of The Guards Patti Smith (2007)

1. I Believe In You Cat Power (2008). The original is from Dylan's "Slow Train Coming," the LP some Dylan fans still love to forget. But the song works well at a non-religious level too, in my opinion.

All of these YouTube links were working links as of my publishing this. I wonder which one will be the first to go down? The Hendrix family is one of the most overly zealous protectors, IMO. But that Hendrix link appears to have survived years, so there you go.

Duh, it just occurred to me that the many of these songs are not protected in the usual way of copyrights. For example, the Hendrix family may not be able to block that video because the rights are shared by Dylan.

The Johnny Cash version of Don't Think Twice.. When Dylan sings it, it sounds kind of whiny.

Waterboarding usually has a justification, but this, THIS is just abject cruelty.

Nice post Chick. Thanks

It was a good post.

Though, music, to me, is pretty much on mute.

The old stuff, I'm 68, is nothing but dirges over a grave.

Then we got some whining wankers who couldn't make it in the real world.

Then some more whining wankers whose lyrics were base, but occasionally had rythym.

Ah hell, I'm getting old. Could give a shit about any of it. Just one more distraction from the things that count.

Mike Ness was good and of course Johnny Cash but my favorite Don't Think Twice is Susan Tedeschi.

Though, at the same time in case it wasn't clear, music, or ryythm at least, has had tremendous impact upon human forming culture.

So then a question... what was the First played instrument. Was it an accident, or a deliberate effort. Or, a vocal.

I'm sure I've missed 99% of what is out there to answer my question.

@XRay, you of all people I'd have thought would appreciate the "underwater shimmery" sound of Them's cover, which was later sampled by Beck.

Thanks for that Dad Bones -- that's exactly what I was hoping for in comments.

chick, truth be told, I'm out of my league, and shouldn't even have spoken. All good will to you.

I can't link it because the address is locked. But there's a reggae version I really like of Subterranean Homesick Blues you can find if you go to youtube and put in 'Is It Rolling Bob.' It will take you to a playlist.

Agree about Hendrix Watchtower.

Wow, that Mike Ness version is excellent.

Then there are the songs superior to Dylan's versions, e.g., Knockin' on Heaven's Door by Clapton.
